PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS
PA Podiatrist to be Inducted into Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame

Marathoner Dr. Ira Meyers of Warrington doesn't have far to run if his feet need tending to after a hard day at the races. After all, the much-honored track and field star is also a podiatrist. Now the Bucks County resident is being recognized for his championship efforts: Dr. Ira Meyers is part of the select class of accomplished athletes being honored by and inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame/Adolph and Rose Levis Museum on May 26. Ceremonies are set for the Gershman Y in Center City Philly.

Dr. Ira Meyers - Winning the Philadelphia Marathon

At 56, native New Yorker Meyers has a lot of miles on him; he has been competing in cross country and marathons since helming his state championship team in high school, back in 1974, then adding to his many medals and honors while attending the College of William and Mary, where the All-East athlete set the college's record in the 10,000 meters. He also was part of the half-marathon gold medal-winning team in the Maccabiah Games as a college junior. He moved to the Philadelphia area in the ’80s where he graduated from the then Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine and won the Philadelphia Marathon.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Chuck Taylors are Nothing More Than a “Glorified Sock" - TX Podiatrist

You’d be hard pressed to find somebody in the United States who doesn’t know what a Chuck Taylor is. Originally called the All Star, it was Converse’s first athletic shoe launched in 1917 and made enormously popular by Mr. Taylor (an athlete himself who also had such a knack for getting basketball pros to wear the shoe on the court that the company later renamed it after him in 1932).

Dr. Leslie Campbell and Chuck Taylors

But what do podiatrists — you know, actual doctors who want you to live your best life — think about them? Dr. Leslie Campbell, a podiatrist based in Allen, Texas, considers Chucks nothing more than a “glorified sock without adequate support or stability and minimal to no shock absorption. For those who have no particular foot complaints (pain), they are designed for the consumer moved by fashion and trends, not the individual seeking foot health.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Richard Rettig, DPM

Dr. Peacock tells an anecdotal story about a patient whose wound healed faster when it was allowed to form a dry eschar scab. At the risk of being called a heretic, I have found similar results in my practice - in those presenting with hard eschar. I had a  patient in a nursing home many years ago with a hard dry eschar-covered wound. I preceded to debride it away, and commenced moist wound care. The charge nurse had a fit, lambasting me for converting this easy-to-care-for stable eschar-covered wound into a wound that requires active care.

We seek out 'maintaining a moist environment', but what almost all of us fail to recognize is that this hard dry stable eschar totally seals off the wound hermetically and naturally, providing a physiologically moist environment underneath.

So I have found that a hard dry stable scab eschar is absolutely consistent with moist wound healing, and needs no debridement and no Santyl enzymatic debridement either. I have wanted to get that off my chest for many years. Now call me a heretic. Mom knew best when she told us "Don't pick your scab"!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Carl Ganio, DPM

After almost 3 decades in private practice, I now work for the VA as a podiatrist. The AAOS misrepresented the facts in my opinion. The Department of Veterans Affairs is well aware of the training and scope of practice of the podiatrist. Parity has nothing to do with the old turf battle between our professions. It has nothing to do with what we are capable of doing, procedures, the OR, etc.

It is about being considered a “physician” by the VA. Our dental colleagues are included as physicians in Title 38… they follow the same pay scales that orthopedic surgeons do… Why not podiatry? Yes, It would allow for a salary bump in most cases…

Editor's note: Dr. Ganio's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Narmo L. Ortiz, Jr., DPM

After a few years of reading countless opinions, statements, and rebuttals in PM News about achieving parity for our profession, I am still amazed at the ongoing apparent "ignorance" of many of our colleagues on both sides of the debate. Has anyone ever taken the time to look at the history of osteopathic medicine in the United States and learn that DOs struggled for over 50 years to attain parity with allopathic medicine and when obtained, they kept their DO designation and principles? With all the progress and improvement in a DPM's education and training, why are we still fighting each other?

Like many of my colleagues, I work in a hospital system alongside MDs and DOs. We consult each other, collaborate with each other and respect each other's expertise in our chosen specialties. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is called a TEAM, and who benefits?: the PATIENT.

I applaud the APMA's efforts in responding to the misinformation provided by those who still seek to keep us on the sidelines, and in closing, with all due respect to some of the scholars and experienced colleagues (DPMs, MDs, and DOs alike) who still support such misinformation, I would hate to think that the real reason for this debacle and lack of unity to support the advancement of DPMs to parity (while maintaining our designation and principles) is to serve an egotistical and self-grandiose purpose.

Narmo L. Ortiz, Jr., DPM, Lakeland, FL.
