Wearing Bad Casual Shoes Can Affect Muscles and Tendons: TX Podiatrist

Unsupportive or worn-out non-running shoes can strain the plantar fasciae. And high heels tighten the calf muscles and Achilles tendons, says Jeffrey A. Ross, DPM, MD, podiatrist and associate clinical professor at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Jeffrey Ross

Look at your shoes from behind. "If they lean in or out, or the soles are worn down, get rid of them," Dr. Ross says. Choose comfortable shoes with good arch support. And women, avoid heels if you can.

African-American Family of Podiatrists Celebrates Achievements at Reunion

A reunion of the Dr. Henry Martin Family, June 14-16 in Dubuque, will celebrate the accomplishments of an African-American family descended from slaves that includes a prominent Mason City family. Dr. Edward C. “E.C.” Martin, a son of Henry Martin, was a Mason City podiatrist. He and his wife, Berlina, a nurse, raised eight children who went on to have successful careers as well.

Dr. Edward A. Martin, second oldest, became a podiatrist like his father and grandfather before him. A 1953 graduate of Mason City High School, Edward A. Martin purchased his own airplane at the age of 28, worked as a janitor in Chicago while attending podiatry college, and became the first minority student to earn the college’s award for proficiency in clinical foot surgery. He practiced podiatry in Chicago and San Jose, CA, prior to retiring in 1996 and moving to Oregon.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

How to Decline a Raise Request

You won’t always be able to offer employees raises—even when you feel they deserve one as much as they feel they do. You have to tread lightly because refusing a request for pay increase can demotivate employees or send them searching for a new job. To decline a raise request without destroying an employee’s morale, follow this advice:

  • Establish a career plan. Explain that you are unable to offer the person the raise right now but that you can reconsider the raise if he or she makes significant improvements or gains new skills or knowledge.
  • Offer more responsibility. Tell employees that you can justify an increase in their wages if they prove that they can successfully increase their workload or take on more difficult assignments. Move them out of their comfort zone on a project to see what they are capable of doing.

Remember: If you offer these options and the employee succeeds, be prepared to cough up the extra money. If you are in no place to offer an increase now or in the future, simply say, “I just can’t offer you more money right now.”

RESPONSES / COMMENTS - (CLINICAL)

RE: Painful Bunion in a 12 Year Old
From: S. Jeffrey Siegel, DPM

This represents an excellent case from both a clinical and a didactic standpoint. I am just going to discuss the surgical aspects.

Metatarsus adductus creates a significant issue because the parents are bringing their child to you for bunion surgery and you need to tell the them that in order to have a successful outcome, you have to essentially break all the bones of their daughter's forefoot in order to correct her bunion. Sounds insane; yet if you ignore the MTA,...

RESPONSES / COMMENTS - (SPORTS MEDICINE)

RE: Biomechanics of Barefoot Running (Brad Makimaa, DPM)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

A few things are missing from Dr. Makimaa's rationale. First, he does not mention that the runners' "length of leg", which is of course determined by the runner's height, has to be taken into account.

Second, after we take into account the effects this has on stride length, we must then look at the runner's chosen stride length, and determine if the runner is...
