PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
MA Podiatrist Assists During Turbulent Flight

A Southwest Airlines flight bound for Chicago was forced to double back to Boston's Logan Airport on Monday night after hitting turbulence so severe passengers vomited and passed out and four people were injured. The impact was so severe, some people on board started throwing up and others fainted, prompting the pilot to ask for help from passengers with medical training.
Dr. Nathaniel George

"I helped one of the flight attendants [then] went back to the seat," said Dr. Nathaniel George, a podiatrist from Chicago. "I think somebody yelled out. Another passenger got nauseous. ... Then they said they had to turn the plane around."

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Custom Orthotics Superior to OTC Pre-Fabs: Canadian Podiatrist

Like your eyes, no two feet are identical, so buying off-the-shelf orthotics may not prevent bunions. "The success rate for an off-the-shelf orthotic is low because it's not formed to your foot," says Dr. Hartley Miltchin. While custom orthotics aren't cheap (most range from $500 to $700), they will last many years.

Dr. Hartley Miltchin

Though no orthotics will fit in every pair of shoes you own, they will fit in most – including sneakers, golf shoes, low heels, and flats, says Miltchin. Tip: Bring your orthotics with you when trying on new shoes to make sure they fit.

IPED NEWS
IPED Announces Graduate Management Clinical Program (GMCP)

The Institute for Podiatric Excellence and Development (IPED) has announced its new initiative that will provide a meaningful experience to the graduates of our podiatry schools who have not been matched in a residency program this year. IPED’s Graduate Management Clinical Program (GMCP) will place a graduate in a private practice setting to learn how to effectively and properly run a practice while also learning clinical skills.

IPED

In addition, this will help increase participants’ chances of getting a residency the next year. IPED is aware that this program is not the solution to the residency shortage. At the very least though, it provides these graduates with a hands-on opportunity while they prepare to apply for a residency the following year.

MEETING NEWS
AAPPM Holds Spring Seminar in AZ

The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) continues to receive requests from podiatrists and staff alike to bring AAPPM events to the western parts of our country. AAPPM added the 2016 Spring Seminar at the San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler, Arizona located just outside Phoenix. The two-day seminar focused on coding and billing for the entire practice and sessions specifically geared for executive managers and medical assistants.

Attendees at AAPPM Spring Seminar

Over 100 doctors and assistants took part in the seminar, and 28 exhibitors were on hand. “I am happy to call this conference another great success,” explained AAPPM President Ben Weaver, DPM. “Over half of the attendees were attending their first AAPPM conference.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Don Peacock DPM, MS

The concept of maintaining a moist environment seems to be more common in wound care these days. I’ve had some patients with problematic healing despite keeping the wound moist, even when combined with enormous efforts to heal these wounds, including very expensive modalities such as biologics and HBO therapy.

Recently, I was referred a patient who had been treated by one of my colleagues at our wound center. The patient was non-ambulatory and had an ulceration over the first metatarsal phalangeal joint (bunion area). Her ABI was 1.4 and she was considered circulatory compromised due to non-compressible arteries, and compression dressings were avoided. She had received HBO therapy, numerous biologics, and...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM, Robert Steinberg, DPM

I encourage all of my colleagues to read the letter posted in yesterday's article about podiatry in the VA system! Although the letter was biased against podiatry and I do not agree with the assumptions drawn, in truth, there were no misstatements made. I would love to see what APMA is writing to defend podiatry seeking parity at the VA.

Tip Sullivan, DPM, Jackson, MS

I would like to read the APMA's detailed response to this arrogant and deliberately misleading letter.

Robert Steinberg, DPM, Schaumberg, IL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Ken Hatch, DPM, Rahn Ravenell, DPM

There is a LOT of truth in this letter, as well as some misleading information.

Ken Hatch, DPM, Annapolis, MD

I've done the APMA eAdvocacy for both the passed House Bill and now the Senate Bill. What I find is that the stock letter is verbose, and the intent could get lost. I modified the letter to include a distinct rebuttal to the AAOS letter and highlighted the training of today's podiatrists. Is there a letter from ACFAS, ABFAS, and APMA that specifically outlines the training we receive?

If I read the AAOS' letter without knowledge of our training, I certainly would be hesitant to put a DPM on the same level as an MD if I believed they received their degree after "podiatry college and 0-3 years of residency training."

Rahn Ravenell, DPM, Mt. Pleasant, SC

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1C
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

This battle for parity will wage only until those that are "protecting" the podiatry profession from our independent and identifiable autonomy cease to exist. We are no longer the profession that we once were. We are well-trained and educated in the field of foot and ankle medicine and surgical orthopedics and have continued to evolve through these past many years from palliative care podiatrists to foot and ankle surgeons.

However, this profession will forever be recognized as a "lesser than" an MD/DO medical profession as long as we continue to educate our students with the current curriculum model that we have been using for years. The Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) will never be equal to the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and hence...
