WesternU Student From Tonga Achieves Dream of Becoming Podiatrist

At one time, Viliami Vakautakakala thought a college education was an unattainable dream. No longer. The Tonga native and Hesperia resident participated in Wednesday’s commencement ceremony for Western University of Health Sciences College of Allied Health Professions and College of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Viliami Vakautakakala

Vakautakakala is now a doctor of podiatric medicine, and in July will begin a surgical residency at a veterans affairs facility in Phoenix. In his native country, going to college is only within the reach of the wealthy and Vakautakakala comes from a family of very modest means, so becoming a podiatric physician “is nothing short of a miracle to me,” he said.

NC Podiatrist Provides Summer Foot Health Prevention Tips

Dr. Christine Wright, a podiatrist who practices with Cornerstone Health Care, stopped by the Morning Show to give us some foot healthcare advice. There are several different problems people can encounter during the summer months. Dr. Wright advised being careful about going barefoot during the summer months, especially in yards, driveways, and on wooden decks.

Dr. Christine Wright

She said she typically sees more splinters, burns, stings, and punctures with glass and other small objects during the summer months. Parents should always make sure their children are wearing protective shoes when they play on the playground.

NJ Podiatrist Participates in Wellness Day Activities

There was something for everyone at Randolph’s first annual Community Wellness Day, held at Randolph Middle School. Estimates are that 500 people attended, including senior citizens, parents, young children, volunteers, and vendors. Activities were geared toward health and wellness.

Dr. David Pizzano

The attendees had the opportunity to experience a plethora of screenings and scans, which included everything from an acupuncture ear treatment, to blood pressure, hemoglobin, vision and scoliosis screenings, postural analysis, and a gait scan which measures how you walk, to chair massages, oral cancer screenings, and bone density scans. When asked what he liked best about the event, podiatrist Dr. David Pizzano of Roxbury Foot and Ankle replied, “just meeting that many people was the best part.”

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Recognizing Cancer of Foot is Theme of Canadian Foot Health Awareness Month

May is Foot Health Awareness Month and the Ontario Podiatric Medical Association (OPMA) is running a campaign to promote good foot health. The OPMA has partnered with Valeant Canada to raise awareness. Kel Sherkin, DPM contacted the Digital Journal to explain more about foot health. “I believe that our feet really are the most used and abused parts of our bodies.”

Dr. Kel Sherkin

Sherkin stresses the danger of cancer on the feet, "All three types of dermal (skin) cancers can arise on and under our feet, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most common form and basal cell carcinoma being less common. Malignant melanoma is even less common, but it is by far the deadliest. The OPMA advises everyone to apply the “ABCDE Rule” to any new or unusual moles: Asymmetry, Border (that is irregular), Color (that is uneven), Diameter (most melanomas are more than 6mm wide), and Evolving (changes in appearance over the past weeks and/or months).

Dream Led to Practice in Vancouver, Canada

Dr. Kathryn Gemmell graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine. She was one of 10 women in a class of 100. “We basically got the same training as the medical students,” she says. She interned at County General Hospital in Los Angeles, a large hospital for the poor and indigent. She then did a year of surgery at Bellflower Hospital in Southern California, “scrubbing in” on everything from eye to cardiac surgery.

One night, she had a dream about B.C. and decided that was where she wanted to be. She opened a podiatry practice in West Vancouver, becoming the first woman podiatrist in the province. She worked a busy, six-day-a-week practice there for 15 years before deciding to scale back her workload, moving first to Sechelt and then Vancouver Island.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
Court to Revoke Probation for WV Podiatrist

A June sentencing date was set for a former area podiatrist after he admitted to violating the terms of his probation. Dr. Scott James Feathers, 59,  admitted to the charges in the petition to revoke his probation Friday in Wood County Circuit Court. According to the petition, on or about Dec. 13, 2013, Feathers was charged with hunting without permission and not wearing blaze orange. The petition stated that he failed to inform his probation officer of the new charges, and he had been ordered by his probation officer not to go gun or bow hunting while on probation. Feathers was indicted by the January 2010 grand jury on two counts of delivery of a controlled substance, hydrocodone.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Thanks to Denver Rescue Mission Donors
From:  Michael J. Schneider, DPM

I think that the generosity of podiatric suppliers should be noted and PM News is the perfect place to do so. I have received recent donations of over 200 pair of orthotics from JM Orthotics in St. George UT and continuous donations from Gordon Labs for use at the Denver Rescue Mission. I see patients there on a monthly basis, and I can't tell you how much these donations mean to the less fortunate folks there.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

With regard to the health insurance giants releasing physician payment data - the reasoning listed is ridiculous. I am not sure that I understand the logic at all. Patients get explanations of benefits for their visits. They see what the doctor charges for their visit. Why are they entitled to know about other patients' payment info? Where is a doctor's privacy? Why not list the salaries of the deadbeat patients who refuse to pay their owed patient responsibility portion? Why not list the salaries of the insurance executives on that same list?
