NYCPM Holds Senior Life Skills Symposium for Graduating Students
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine at Touro University (NYCPM) wrapped up its Senior Week of activities including community service, senior skills day, and holding a mock trial based on a podiatry malpractice suit. The agenda for the Life Skills Symposium was lectures on important topics that residents will need to know and become familiar with including the current health care environment, medical malpractice, medical staff credentialing, HIPAA, regulatory and ethical issues for residents, state licensing boards/applying for your license, mental health/burnout, health insurance, and board certification. The event was sponsored by PICA, Kerecis, and the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA).

7 Coding Mistakes That are Quietly Costing Your Practice
Revenue loss in primary care is often driven by everyday coding and documentation habits. These seven common mistakes can lead to reduced legitimate reimbursement without physicians realizing it.
5. Treating all payers like Medicare
Medicare coding rules are widely understood, but commercial insurers and Medicare Advantage plans may apply different coverage policies, documentation expectations, or payment rules. Applying Medicare logic universally can lead to missed reimbursement or avoidable denials.
Practices that do not track payer-specific differences may undercode defensively or fail to appeal inappropriate adjustments. Understanding how major payers interpret E/M services and modifiers can materially affect revenue over time.

What Are Your Chances of an IRS Audit? 15 Audit Red Flags
These red flags could increase your chances of the IRS selecting your return for audit.
13. Claiming the foreign earned income exclusion
U.S. citizens who work overseas can exclude up to $130,000 of their income earned abroad on their 2025 tax return if they were bona fide residents of another country for the entire year or they were outside of the U.S. for at least 330 complete days in a 12-month span. (The 2026 exclusion amount is $132,900.) Additionally, the taxpayer must have a tax home in the foreign country. The tax break doesn't apply to amounts paid by the U.S. or one of its agencies to its employees who work abroad.
IRS agents actively sniff out people who are erroneously taking this break, and the issue keeps coming up in disputes before the Tax Court. Among the areas of IRS focus: Filers with minimal ties to the foreign country they work in and who keep an abode in the U.S. Note that the U.S. abode restriction doesn't apply to individual taxpayers who work in combat zones, flight attendants and pilots, and employees of U.S. government agencies who mistakenly claim the exclusion when they are working overseas.

Once again, podiatrists/physicians are being used as the pawn in the chess game of medical supply and pharmaceutical companies. This is nothing new, but the stakes are getting higher with the increased costs of drugs and products. What is not new, are these companies refusing to take on any risk, and make the lion's share of profit. Without us, they have no business, but they refuse to partner with us when it comes to risk.
Years ago, when skin substitutes became available, I asked the rep (from a well known and large company) to share the cost risk with me. The product was a thousand dollars or so, and the application of it paid about...

Dr. Hultman’s recent contribution to Podiatry Management on physician financial literacy is a commendable starting point, yet it necessarily sacrifices depth for accessibility. For the physician genuinely committed to understanding the financial architecture of a private practice — rather than merely its surface appearance — a more rigorous framework is warranted.
My perspective is informed by direct involvement in the mergers and acquisitions space, having evaluated and facilitated the consolidation of multiple dermatology practices into private equity platforms. In that context, one learns quickly that sophisticated acquirers are largely indifferent to top-line revenue or a conventional profit-and-loss statement in isolation. RE: The Passing of Stephen J. Ferro, DPM
Dr. Stephen J. Ferro, 84, of Topeka, passed from this life on the evening of Thursday, May 7, 2026, at his beloved and long-time home on Lake Sherwood, surrounded by family who loved him deeply. He graduated from University High School in 1959, earned his degree from Long Beach State University, and received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the School of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco. From 1964 to 1966, he served his country honorably in the United States Army as a medical technician.

In 1978, Dr. Ferro was hand-selected to establish a Podiatry Department for the VA Hospital in Topeka, KS. As a veteran himself, he dedicated his thirty-five-year career to caring for his fellow veterans. He retired in 2013.
