INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
UK Podiatrist Discusses Treatment of Blisters

Blisters are one of the most common injuries suffered by runners. “This is often as a result of trainers rubbing against sensitive parts of the feet, especially if worn over a long period of time,” says podiatrist Dina Gohil of DG Podiatrist.

Dina Gohill

Covering a blister with a plaster or dressing can help to protect the skin from further damage. “A moist hydrocolloid dressing can help to cushion the blister to reduce pain and speed up healing, and you can get specially designed blister plasters at a pharmacy,” says Gohil.

BEYOND PODIATRY
Former Podiatrist is Head of a Studio Digital Technologies Company

A group of 30 people who were making films, TV shows, and video games now gather in a London studio to explain complex medical procedures through digital productions. They work for Medtronic, creating content for the company's Touch Surgery app. The app provides digital visualizations of procedures for doctors and other medical professionals to prepare and practice for surgery.

Daniel Smollan

"We use a lot of the technology that comes out of visual effects. What we're trying to do is improve training and education," said Daniel Smollan, head of the studio for digital technologies, which is within Medtronic's surgical business. Smollan was a podiatrist, then switched careers to become a computer animator. He has worked on blockbusters including Total Recall, The Bourne Legacy, and Skyfall. His two job paths turned out to be perfect preparation for a field now known as medical visualization.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
Growing International Recognition of Topical Oxygen Therapy for DFUs

NATROX® Wound Care, a leading innovator in wound care technology has announced the release of newly published expert recommendations on the use of topical oxygen therapy for wound healing. The updated guidelines endorse topical oxygen therapy (TOT) as an adjunct therapy in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).

Dr. Windy Cole

According to Windy Cole, DPM, renowned authority in podiatric medicine and dedicated wound care advocate for over two decades, "The evidence supporting the efficacy of TOT is now undeniable. It is imperative that healthcare professionals embrace this innovative yet simple approach to achieve improved healing outcomes."  After witnessing the positive impact that topical oxygen therapy can have on healing DFUs in her own clinic, Windy recently joined the NATROX® team as Director of Global Medical Affairs to further advocate for the integration of topical oxygen therapy in the treatment pathway for chronic wounds.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Top Six Ways to Increase Patient Visits

Patient visits have a direct impact on the success of your independent practice. Here are six tips from the experts to put into action.

5. Create "Wow" Experiences for Existing Patients.

By creating moments of "wow" in your office, your current patients are more likely to talk to and tell their friends about you and share their experience on social media (the new word of mouth), said consultant John Lynn. Be creative and focus on the patient. A nice office is fine, but something that is personal to the patient can create a much bigger "wow".

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Free ePrescribe App

I currently use an app called Iprescribe. It is a stand-alone app. It has been free for years but now they want to charge a yearly fee of $360. Does anyone know any free or low-cost app options available?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS
RE: Unequal Treatment of Ex-Patriot DPMs by ABPM
From: Jeff Carnett, DPM

There are many of us American trained DPMs working overseas who are not eligible to be board certified by either board as we did one or two-year residencies, but not three-year programs. So, how shocking to see that ABPM will certify those with bachelor degrees in podiatry from the UK, SA, Australia, Malta, and New Zealand who did not take the MCAT, have  no basic medical sciences in their courses, and no residencies. These degrees are right from high school.

Doesn't that discredit anyone with the ABPM certification in the U.S.? So, we expatriate DPMs need to take a bachelor podiatry degree so we can get certified, but we can't get certified with a CPME-approved DPM degree and residency? I’m trying to understand how that helps the profession. While overseas, our work is often highly surgical, but alas that doesn't count.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PODCASTS)
From: Ed Davis, DPM

Many thanks to Dr. Richie and Dr. Kesselman for their efforts to enable podiatrists to prescribe AFOs to Medicare patients. This is a necessary and important service to improve the lives of many patients who have restricted mobility due to malfunction of the foot and ankle. The reimbursement process has been, at times, a tortuous one. The documentation and forms required to demonstrate need for AFOs and document proper device delivery are available on the websites of many podiatric orthotic labs. Difficulties with reimbursement persist despite following the rules for documentation.

Here are some of the challenges:

1. Incorrect interpretation by DMERC Medicare carriers of the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RECOMMENDED READING)
RE: FIRST STEPS- How Upright Walking Made Us Human by Jeremy DeSilva.
From: Michael Rahn, DPM

I recommend this book, published by HarperCollins, to all of my colleagues who treat the lower extremity, because it may give greater insight into the variations of what we consider "normal" as well as providing insight in the changes from the "grasping, tree-climbing" foot to our bipedalism.

This book, published in 2021, describes the fossil discoveries which show the progression of changes from the tree-climbing species with talus adjacent to calcaneus to humans with talus, of course, atop the calcaneus. He further describes other changes with upright walking including changes in long muscle attachments to the pelvis as well as the influence of upright walking and gravity on the human birth process.

The author is a paleoanthropologist at Dartmouth College, does much of his fossil research in Africa, and also teaches anatomy. He was also kind to reply to an email question I had sent regarding the subtalar joint. I learned that the human talus position developed 225 million years before humans appeared on the planet.
