APMA COMPONENTS IN THE NEWS
PRESENT e-Learning Systems Announces New Partnerships with ACFAOM & NPMA

PRESENT e-Learning Systems CEO Alan Sherman, DPM, CCMEP said, "The American College of Foot & Ankle Orthopedics & Medicine has been contributing enormously to the primary podiatric and medical skills of practicing podiatrists since the late 1940s. Their work has never been more important than it is today, as orthopedics and medicine are the cornerstone of podiatric practice. The Nevada Podiatric Medical Association, with 138 current members, is in the top half of the largest state podiatry associations in the nation. We are very pleased to be partnering with them to provide valuable services to their members."

(L-R) Drs. Alan Sherman, Daniel Evans, and Kenneth Fatkin

ACFAOM President Daniel Evans, DPM said, "The American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine is delighted to become the newest member of the PRESENT Alliance Partners Program. We look forward to working with PRESENT for the betterment of each of our organizations." The Nevada Podiatric Medical Association President Kenneth Fatkin, DPM, added, "The Nevada Podiatric Medical Association is honored to be newly affiliated with the PRESENT Alliance Partners Program. The educational opportunities through PRESENT e-Learning and their various conferences have provided many podiatrists with a flexible opportunity to maintain our academic standards and enrich the lives of our patients."

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS
Bret Ribotsky: What are the APMA's plans for helping members with the new value-based payment models?

Dr. R. Daniel Davis

R. Daniel Davis:  We need to get data, or else leave others to determine our destiny. We are looking into a registry to capture the data to determine a value-based model.  Outcome data is critical, as BMAD (Medicare) data show what we did, but not our outcomes. APMA is working on this intensely; stay tuned.

Drs. Jeffrey Niezgoda and Robert Snyder

Meet the Masters airs live every Tuesday night. Tonight's guests are wound experts Jeffrey A. Niezgoda, MD and Robert Snyder, DPM, MSc. You can register for future events by clicking here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART !A
From: Gene Mirkin, DPM

Consider topical application of Aldara (imiquimod) daily. You can increase success by topically inoculating the skin with the Aldara. Let the patient know this may take 6-12 weeks to make a difference. With a  severely compromised immune system, you would obviously avoid excision or destructive procedures (with blistering agents).

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Michael Cohn, DPM

I have found Efudex, 5 fluro-uracil, cream to be highly effective in patients with poor immune response. It simply takes a rapidly dividing wart cell and puts in a false amino acid and kills the cell on division. You put it on the lesions under an occlusive dressing and it works very well in most cases.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: AAOS and the Department of Veterans Affairs Provider Equity Act
From: Multiple PM News Subscribers

Editor's note: Several PM News subscribers have forwarded us this letter from the American Academy of of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) to two U.S. senators regarding podiatrists being placed on the same level as MDs and DO in the Department of Veterans Affairs Provider Equity Act. This letter underscores the importance of podiatrists to support such legislation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Narmo Ortiz, DPM

While I can understand Dr. Kornfeld's and Dr. Graziano's positions on this issue, they also must realize it is not about "testicular fortitude" or having the courage to dismiss most or all insurance participation; it is about, like in real estate: location, location, location. If you are living and practicing in a community that is mainly made up of blue-collar workers and retirees, you do not see luxurious shopping centers with high-end stores, etc. You have Wal-Mart and your neighborhood supermarket to shop at, as it is not by choice, but is what can be afforded.

So, the question is, are we supposed to leave those communities and patients unattended? Indeed, it is a tough subject matter to discuss, but while the message is understood and appreciated, not all physicians live and practice in locations where there are patients with a lot of cash flow to "throw around".
