PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Proper Lacing of Running Shoes Matters: TX Podiatrist

According to double board-certified podiatrist Chanel J. Perkins, DPM, "It’s important to note that injury can occur from too tightly laced shoes as well as too loosely laced shoes." So this little shoe-tying checkup is a great way to look after the long-term health of your feet. Dr. Perkins says a few final finishing touches are in order. Before you head out the door, make sure you've made use of all the little holes running up and down your sneakers. "I recommend using all the eyelets when lacing, and then tying just [in front of] the ankle joint," she says.

Dr. Chanel Perkins

You should also always, always double-knot your sneakers—especially if you prefer to log your miles on the treadmill (safety first, everyone). Once you've taken a final moment to check that your sock hasn't slipped into the back of your shoe, you're ready to run.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Bahamas Podiatrist Discusses Accessory Navicular Syndrome

According to Monique Mitchell, DPM. MPH, "An accessory navicular is congenital (present at birth). It is not part of normal bone structure and therefore is not present in most people. People who have an accessory navicular often are unaware of the condition if it causes no problems. However, some people with this extra bone develop a painful condition known as accessory navicular syndrome when the bone and/or posterior tibial tendon are aggravated."

Dr. Monique Mitchell

"The goal of nonsurgical treatment for accessory navicular syndrome is to relieve the symptoms. The following may be used: Immobilization, ice, NSAIDs, physical therapy, and/or orthotic devices. If non-surgical treatment fails to relieve the symptoms of accessory navicular syndrome, surgery may be done. Surgery may involve removing the accessory bone, reshaping the area, and repairing the posterior tibial tendon to improve its function," says Dr. Mitchell.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
NY Podiatrist Discusses How to Select Sandals

When shopping for sandals, Bruce Pinker, DPM, podiatrist and owner of Progressive Foot Care, says the first thing to assess is whether they have adequate room for your toes. “If the sandals have a closed toe box, it is important that the toes are not cramped, especially if one has hammertoes.” He also recommends, whenever possible, to purchase sandals with an ankle strap. “Ankle straps add stability to help prevent injuries, such as ankle sprains,” he says.

Dr. Bruce Pinker

Dr. Pinker recommends sandals from brands like New Balance, Orthofeet, Teva, and Mephisto, since they can often comfortably accommodate wide feet. Just note—the one sandal to stay away from? Flip-flops. “They usually offer a lack of stability and can irritate feet,” says Pinker.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Some Benefits of Virtual Care

The use of technology to deliver healthcare – has been part of the patient care landscape for years, but its popularity has surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. What do people need to know about virtual care? Here are some key takeaways:

2. Virtual Care is convenient for both patients and clinicians.

Technology continues to evolve, giving more people an entry point for virtual care. Patients that establish care during an initial face-to-face office visit can benefit from convenient virtual follow-up visits.

QUERIES (NON-TAXABLE)
Query: Taxable or Non-Taxable?

I sell items in my office - pads, Formula 3, OTC orthotics, etc. and I am trying to figure out sales tax for these items I sell. I reviewed the Kansas guidelines and I am still puzzled.

RESULTS/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1A
From: W. David Herbert, DPM

I have always been impressed with anything Dr. Levy has said about our profession. He is spot on today! For example, as an attorney, I have an unlimited license to practice law. However, I would not dream of getting involved in a divorce case! I have even had lawyers more knowledgeable with real estate assist me on some real estate issues.

Today's podiatrist is surely the expert in anything involving the foot or the ankle. I also think we know enough medicine to be able to refer patients to the appropriate physician specialist for our patients that present with unusual medical problems. I just heard a program about a study that showed that the average family practice physician is poorly equipped to prescribe medications to treat mental illness, but are the ones who are treating 2/3 of those with depression!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1B
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM

The biggest mistake we made as a profession continues to be to ask “Is it covered?” as a prerequisite to care. The second biggest mistake has been the simultaneous abandoning and minimizing of lower extremity biomechanics. We have neglected our inherited claim to be the best orthotic and closed chain professionals that Drs. Root, Langer, and Dananberg gifted us by instead becoming amateurish, uneducated, and unskilled.

This year, I tearfully retired as a DPM. How did we let this happen?

Dennis Shavelson, DPM (retired), CPed, Tampa, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Keith L. Gurnick, DPM

"The Trigon Lapidus Wedge System restores the natural anatomy which restores the natural function of the first ray."

Successfully fusing the first metatarsal cuneiform joint will never allow for natural function of the first ray! This is because the first metatarsal can no longer plantarflex at that joint when it is required to do so in the late stance and propulsive phase of forward moving gait.
