Professor David G. Armstrong, Director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, received the 2023 Karel Bakker Award for Limb Preservation today, to a standing ovation at the King Willem-Alexander Auditorium during the 9th International Symposium on the Diabetic Foot.

Recently, Chase Stuart, DPM participated in providing free wellness foot exams at Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis. The foot wellness exam takes less than 10 minutes. The healthcare professional checks for blood flow and tests how the nerves respond to stimulation.

The visit offers reassurance and, if needed, early intervention. "I commonly see where, what starts off as just a little blister, patients naturally they try to let time it'll heal on its own. But that can easily turn into a full-blown ulcer and get infected," Dr. Stuart said. Stuart said he tells his patients, if you have a foot issue developing, getting it checked sooner is better.

VA Podiatrist Interviewed by Nutritional Health Expert
Ben Pearl, DPM was interviewed by nutritional health expert Dr. Eric Berg. Berg’s podcast became a phenomenon with the popularity of the Keto diet and intermittent fasting and now has over 10.5 million subscribers. Dr. Pearl was asked to share his experiences using adjunct therapy with electromagnetic field and infrared therapy for gout flares.

Dr. Pearl agreed that fructose consumption increases inflammation in the body and needs to be curtailed in patients with gout flares in particular. He highlighted some examples of cases he has used combined infrared and electromagnetic therapies for gout flares as adjunct therapy. Pearl emphasized how difficult it is for companies to obtain IRBs with the backlog of funding and limited interest in corporate funding for research.

Your Bombas socks should feel comfortable and supportive without slipping or shifting. And the cuff should hit at a comfortable place or have padding to avoid rubbing from your shoe, which can cause blisters and skin irritation.

Walking, running, hiking, and other cross-training athletic activities often require highly breathable, moisture-wicking socks, Dr. Prevete says. Height is up to you, although taller socks may be better for field sports because they offer protection from debris and contact with fellow players. Runners should look for additional cushioning at the ball and heel of the foot. And for recovery, compression socks can help provide relief from sore feet.
