GA Podiatrist Elected FPMB President

The Federation of Podiatric Medical Boards (FPMB), a national non-profit that promotes high standards for podiatric physician licensure, regulation, and practice, announced the election of Leonard R. La Russa, DPM, as president. He was elected at the 2018 executive board meeting held on April 27. La Russa has served on the FPBM executive board since 2016 and serves as the vice chair of the FPMB’s Interstate Podiatric Medical Licensing Compact committee.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrists Discuss Causes of Xerosis

For many of us, the words "foot cream" are an inherently unsexy pair — but even less arousing are crusty, dry, and flaky feet. Aesthetics aside, less-than-supple feet can also feel uncomfortable — or even downright painful. According to Hillary Brenner, DPM, a New York City-based podiatrist, the reason our feet tend to feel rougher than the rest of our body often boils down to simple physics. "Every time we walk, we exert [a lot of] pressure from our body weight, and the friction between our feet and the ground can cause them to become dry," she tells Allure
Drs. Hillary Brenner and Krista Archer

Another culprit behind crustiness, explains New York City podiatrist Krista Archer, DPM, is that some of us don't shed keratin as quickly as others. No foot cream on hand? Archer recommends moisturizing dry feet with organic avocado oil if you're in a pinch. The result: pure, unadulterated softness.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
7 Financial Reports Your Practice Needs to Run

Most physicians readily admit that classes on how to run a successful medical practice were not part of the curriculum in medical school. While "financial reporting," might not have been a class at your medical school, experts say you need to at least become familiar with understanding some of the basic reports. Here are seven to track.

1. Appointment Analysis - "Although analyzing appointments is not considered a financial report in the traditional sense, patients who do not show up for scheduled appointments cost the practice money. The ideal fill rate is usually about 90 to 95 percent. Calculate the actual fill rate and compare it to the desired fill rate to decide if any correction or additional action is needed. The report also shows which time of the day or which months are busier for your practice. This helps you determine if and when additional help is needed." - Ada Stewart, MD, AAFP Board of Directors

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Glenn Sidney Gold

Dr. Glenn Sidney Gold, Jr., 75, passed away on the morning of May 12, 2018 in Bountiful, after complications following a fall. He graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco in 1970.

Dr. Glenn Gold

After his completing his residency in Hopedale, Illinois, Dr. Gold moved back to Bountiful to establish his podiatry practice, practicing in Bountiful and in Layton at Tanner Clinic for 40 years, later teaching at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City. He served in leadership positions for the state professional licensing and the Utah Podiatry Association.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: James E. Spitsen, ARM, CIC

Dr. Boylan asks a great question regarding cyber insurance when he asks “how much is enough?” The answer depends on several factors:

1. How large is your practice? How many patients could you potentially need to offer credit monitoring to as the result of a breach?

2. Is your practice fully electronic? If so are you using the ‘cloud’ to store your patient records? Are you using a third-party vendor for your EHR or medical billing and if so, have you read what the limits to their responsibility are in case of a breach on their end that affects your data? All of these scenarios potentially increase your...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1A
From: George Jacobson, DPM, David S. Wolf, DPM

My experience is exactly as Dr. Charles Morelli describes it but I still wear an embroidered lab coat over the scrubs.  We also pay for the staff's uniforms (embroidered scrubs ). I let them pick matching colors that they coordinate on different days of the week and with holidays.

George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL

In my experience, patients don’t care how you are dressed or how much you know; they want to know how much you care.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1B
From: Narmo L. Ortiz, Jr., DPM

Once again, PM News visits the issue of what office attire our colleagues wear in the office. Nevertheless, when a colleague expresses his or her "feelings" on the issue in this forum, and blindly shames or belittles his or her colleagues for what attire they choose to wear in their office, it is very unbecoming and unprofessional. It speaks volumes about the person who claims to be a "professionally dressed" doctor.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Bill Beaton, DPM

Since when are podiatry practices overwhelmed by RFC? Not all podiatrists are three-year residency trained, and in many states are not able to practice to the extent of their education and training. In order to find more treatment-oriented care, one must see all patients and provide all appropriate examination and treatment. Florida's practice act states that the practice of podiatric medicine "means the diagnosis, or medical, surgical, palliative, and mechanical treatment of the human foot and leg."

As to hiring licensed nail techs to perform RFC in a podiatry office, I caution against that since the Florida state cosmetology statutes do not allow for palliative foot care as that is not defined within their state licensure. I quote from the Florida Board of Cosmetology occupational definition. "A nail registration means a person licensed to engage in the practice of manicuring and pedicuring in the State of Florida. Manicuring means the cutting, polishing, tinting, coloring, cleansing, adding, or extending of the nails, and massaging of the hands. Pedicuring means the shaping, (not cutting or trimming), polishing, tinting,or cleansing of the nails of the feet, and massaging or beautifying of the feet. These services must be performed in a licensed salon."

Routine Footcare Services defined by the Florida podiatry practice act and performed by anyone other than a licensed podiatrist constitutes practicing podiatry without a license. Anyone who allows a non-licensed assistant to practice podiatry, is in violation of the Florida podiatry practice act. This may also apply to other states which have similar statutes.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day

nat-2™ has launched innovative semi transparent rain boots made from real corn. While the brand nat-2™ is producing rain boots made from recycled leather for some years now, they have also developed a brand new mixture of rubber and up to 15% recycled real corn.

Perfect for a rainy day movie?

Due to the heat-intensive production, a genuine popcorn smell is created by the processing of corn, which finally gives the shoe its uniqueness.
