It's Important to Treat Shoes After Laser Surgery: TX Podiatrist
Dr. Joel Brook says lasers are a big step up from the anti-fungal medications people used to use. The pills you would have to ingest. Those came with significant possible side-effects. He says the lasers have no side-effects and work on 70 to 85 percent of patients.

Dr. Joel Brook |
"Most of the time people show up because they just hate how the condition looks. So, over the years the treatment has evolved,” says Dr. Brook. It’s important to treat a patient’s shoes as well; an ultraviolet shoe sanitizer is used to sterilize all your shoes, so you don’t become re-infected.

FL Podiatrist Comments on Board Resignations
All the members in one of Florida's regulatory boards recently resigned after the state legislature didn't pass a bill protecting them legally. The issue stems back to a U.S. Supreme Court decision that made individual board members across the country liable for antitrust litigation. Abram Finkelstein is one of the members of the Board of Employee Leasing Companies, all of whom sent resignation letters to Governor Rick Scott this week. Finkelstein says they put off the issue for months in hopes that the legislature would pass a bill indemnifying board members, thus giving them protection from potential lawsuits.
|
|
Dr. Chet Evans |
Finkelstein and other board members who resigned wonder if more will follow suit. Dr. Chet Evans used to sit on the Board of Podiatry but left because of the antitrust issue. "I think there will be some of them reconsidering their decision to stay on board," Dr. Evans said.

Matthew G. 5 Video Marketing Tips for Your Practice - Part 5
Video marketing can be an inexpensive and powerful platform to showcase your business. Forward thinking clinics that create consistent videos on a regular basis will not only gain more viewers, but patients. Here are five of my favorite tips to help you effectively use video for your medical practice:
5. Grab The Viewers: Studies show you need to grab your audience’s attention in the first 10 seconds of the video. If done right, videos can be used as a powerful tool to attract new patients. Videos that teach something new, educate, or explain a concept can often get shared and bookmarked online. If you can get in the habit of creating compelling video, you can take advantage of a powerful and inexpensive marketing strategy for your business.

| QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) | |
Query: Orthotists and HIPAA
I occasionally utilize free-standing orthotists for some bracing. Recently, some have been asking for detailed patient notes stating that they are necessary for insurance billing. I have no records release from the patient to send records and no business agreement with these companies. Where do these requests stand with regard to HIPAA?
Edwin Harris, DPM, Westchester, IL
Editor's note: PM News does not provide legal advise. Under HIPAA, "A covered entity is permitted, but not required, to use and disclose protected health information, without an individual’s authorization, for ... (2) Treatment, Payment, and Health Care Operations...Covered entities may rely on professional ethics and best judgments in deciding which of these permissive uses and disclosures to make."
If you have any doubts as to the appropriateness of the release of PHI, you have the choice of 1) obtaining the patient's permission or 2) having the receiving party execute a Business Associate Agreement (BAA).

| CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Ultrasound Guided Injections Into Plantar Fascia
When administering a cortisone injection into the plantar fascia via ultrasound guidance, what is the best CPT code to use?
Robert Marra, DPM, Enfield, CT
Response: The code for ultrasound (US) guided injections is CPT 76942 (ultrasonic guidance for needle placement [e.g., biopsy, aspiration, injection, localization device], imaging supervision and interpretation).
I recommend that your documentation be very clear as to the medical necessity for performing an US guided injection versus just palpating the area and then injecting.

If all current, past, and present, members of Congress were not allowed to exempt themselves from the AHCA (and Social Security for that matter), an equitable solution which is fair for all Americans would soon emerge.
