PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Not All Flip-Flops are the Same: NY Podiatrist

Once warm temperatures set in, strappy sandals and flip-flops are all we want to wear with our summer shorts and dresses. The catch? "By design, sandals have less support," says Emily Splichal, DPM, a New York City-based podiatrist. Since summery footwear doesn’t offer the same arch support as sneakers and cushy winter boots, we’re often left with weak ankles, sore heels, and tender arches by August.

Dr. Emily Splichal

But don’t swear off flip-flops just yet; we asked podiatrists to help us find the best ones that provide feel-good features to keep your feet healthy. Rhinestone-embellished and podiatrist-approved (Dr. Splichal is a big fan of Aetrex), these slip-ons offer orthotic support, foam cushioning, and antimicrobial materials that keep germs from sticking around in the heat.

MEETING NEWS
Region Three Meeting Features Interactive Panel Session

Last week, during Region Three/APMA’s Thursday Panel Session “Ask Me Anything About the Diabetic Foot,” instructors Drs. Lee C. Rogers, DPM and Lawrence Lavery, as well as attendees (more than 500 DPMs in attendance) interacted during the lecture via cell phones and broadcast live on Facebook to generate questions from doctors and patients worldwide. More than 600 people from all over the globe tuned in.

Interactive session at Region 3

This was the first time Region Three participated in anything like this. “Patients asked questions about the Charcot foot, and what can be done to make more primary care doctors aware of it,” says Dr. Rogers. Dr. Lavery responded to several podiatrists who asked questions about how we change the reimbursement model to cover services preventing ulcers and amputations, potentially saving the healthcare system billions of dollars annually.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
IL Podiatrist Pleads Guilty in St. Louis to $7 Million Fraud

A Chicago podiatrist and healthcare company owner pleaded guilty in federal court here Friday and admitted defrauding Medicare of more than $6 million. Dr. Yev Gray, 49, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge and a charge of making a false statement relating to healthcare as part of a deal that will likely earn him 7 ½ years in prison at an August sentencing hearing. Gray will also be ordered to repay $6,974,895 lost to the scheme.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
'Smart Mat' Predicts 97% of Recurrent Diabetic Foot Ulcers

A novel wireless foot-temperature–monitoring system (Podimetrics) aimed at detecting impending diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) through plantar temperature change is highly predictive of recurrent DFUs, according to new findings from a multicenter, prospective, cohort study in a high-risk population. The temperature-monitoring mat was able to correctly detect 97% of impending non-traumatic DFUs in patients who had had prior ulcers.

Dr. Robert Frykberg and Podiometrics

"We showed that (by) using this wireless mat and an algorithm that detects temperature rise over several days, it is possible to detect development of an ulcer 5 weeks in advance," reported Robert Frykberg, DPM, podiatrist at Phoenix VA Healthcare System, Arizona, and lead investigator of the study that was published May 2 in Diabetes Care. However, although there was a high rate of detection of ulcers, this was accompanied by a high false-positive rate of 57%, the authors note, adding that the protocol might need to be tweaked to try to reduce this.

MACRA UPDATE
CMS Gives 800,000 Docs a Pass on MACRA Requirement

More than 800,000 clinicians will not have to comply with Merit-based Incentive Payment System reporting requirements outlined in MACRA, which may save them millions collectively in compliance costs. The majority of physician practices were expected to use the Merit-based Incentive Payment System, known as MIPS, to comply with MACRA as opposed to alternative pay models. Under MIPS, payments would be based on a compilation of quality measures and use of electronic health records.

The CMS has now sent letters to 806,879 clinicians saying that they will not be evaluated under MIPS in 2017. Up to 642,000 physicians were slated to submit MIPS data, but that number has now dropped to 418,849. The exempted physicians include those with less than $30,000 in Medicare charges and fewer than 100 unique Medicare patients per year are exempt from complying with MIPS. Clinicians new to Medicare this year are also exempt this year.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Video Marketing Tips for Your Practice - Part 4

4. Take Advantage of Local Talent and Tools: There are big video marketing firms that can charge upwards of $10,000 to create a video. But did you know that it is easy to find local talent that can be had for pennies on the dollar? One particular resource I have used are wedding videographers. Most videographers aren't recording weddings seven days a week. On their off days, most will be more than happy to create an appealing video for you to showcase your business at an affordable rate.

If you are interested in creating a video yourself, there are an abundance of video editing software available. An easy way to create video quickly is by answering a commonly asked question using a few Powerpoint slides, and recording them using screen capture software. If you have a PC, I recommend Camtasia. If you own a Mac, the built-in QuickTime Player can create excellent screen capture videos. Personally, I use ScreenFlow on my Mac because it has great editing software and is pretty easy to use. A great online resource is Animoto, which can take still pictures and create dazzling videos on the fly.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day

One of my patients purchased a pair of $1,500 Christian Louboutin shoes to wear at her wedding. She canceled her wedding ('cold feet') and didn't want the shoes or anything that reminded her of the wedding.

Cold feet turned into art

She knew about my extensive shoe collection and brought the shoes in for me to keep. These have now become a framed work of art and are displayed in my living room.
