PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS

OH Podiatrist Campaigns With OH Senator

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman campaigned Friday across southern Ohio with Dr. Brad Wenstrup, the GOP nominee in the 2nd House District that Portman formerly represented. Wenstrup upset Rep. Jean Schmidt in the March primary. At a 19th-century inn in this Adams County town, Wenstrup was asked about his positions on some social issues. Wenstrup replied that he is against same-sex marriage, is anti-abortion, and in favor of gun ownership rights.

Dr. Brad Wenstrup

Wenstrup pledged to work in Washington to fight prescription drug abuse, a major problem in the southern Ohio region. Wenstrup, a podiatrist who served as an Army combat surgeon in Iraq, faces little-known Democrat William Smith in November in the district where Portman won election seven times.

Retired KS Podiatrist is Now a Lexus Delivery Specialist

Lexus has recognized that salespeople, after closing a deal, might not have the time or training to instruct a buyer in every detail of a technologically advanced car. “They’re naturally looking over their shoulder for a new customer,” said Vince Salisbury, training manager at Lexus College, the brand’s training program in California.

Dr. Thomas Trillin

By June, Lexus plans to have certified 2,400 specialists after a training program. New hires include Alex Oger in Dallas, a former trainer for Apple’s Genius Bar, and Dr. Thomas Trillin, a retired podiatrist and Lexus enthusiast, in the Kansas City area.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS

NJ Podiatrist is Consultant for Foot Care Products Company

After being injured while skiing, Steve Llorens decided to create new products to treat foot problems. The light went on for Llorens when he wore his new product to his podiatrist, Spero Demoleas, DPM, who “immediately grasped the idea and asked for a few more for patients,” he says. When their conditions significantly improved, the podiatrist recommended that Llorens introduce it to physicians at the New York Clinical Conference in 2009.

Dr. Spero Demoleas

Encouraged by the positive responses of Dr. Demoleas and his patients, Llorens and partners Dr. Joy Marcial and Paul Mazzanobile founded STRUTZ®, with the Sole Angel® as the keystone of the company. Dr. Demoleas now serves as one of the company’s medical consultants.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters.

Bret Ribotsky: How can you tell if patients are satisfied with the care you render?

Dr. Lisa Schoene

Lisa Schoene: I do a practice survey with every new patient. I’ve been doing that for almost 20 years and I think [it's important] to know where you stand when patients leave your office – did they have a good experience?  I have a two-page (front and back) survey. I mail to to them with a postage-paid return envelope. Patients can either put their name on it or leave it blank. I think that it’s very important to have a barometer on to how you’re doing. Are you doing everything correctly? Is your office clean and neat? Is your staff friendly? Did you get good care?  Did you feel like you understood what your care was and what the condition that you have was? So, I ask all those questions and I read every response.

Drs. Bryan Markinson and Marta Rendon

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guests are dermatology experts Drs. Bryan Markinson and Marta Rendon. You can register for future events by clicking here

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)

Query: Billing Under an Associate's Insurance Number

I am currently an employed podiatrist in a practice where the owner is selling the practice to another podiatrist. They are going to close on the practice sale in the next few weeks. The new owner has formed a corporation in his name, and he wants to start practicing after the sale. I have overheard that they want to have him initally bill under my name/number until he gets on all the insurance panels. I am worried about this because I do not own the practice and I am not comfortable with opening myself up to anything resembling fraudulent billing. What are the guidelines about this, and what should I do since no one has discussed this with me.

Name Withheld

Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. Billing under an associate's insurance number is generally problematic. This is the ideal situation to consult with a healthcare attorney who can protect your interests.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1

RE: Stabilizing the Medial Column (David Weiss, DPM)
From: Thomas Graziano, DPM, MD

My advice is to stick with your original plan. Hypermobility with a long first metatarsal is crying out for a Lapidus procedure. A Lapidus in capable hands is an excellent medial column stabilizer. I think that you have to ask yourself what would prevent you from performing it. Fusing the 1st metatarsal cuneiform joint should not be considered a negative as your post here implies. Don't be swayed by a "few lectures" you've heard offering an alternative. Don't kill a mouse with an elephant gun. Stick to time-honored procedures reported on for decades with excellent outcomes, namely a first metatarsal cuneiform arthrodesis.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 2

RE: Non-Union and Malunion of Metatarsals (Philip Graham, DPM)
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

I respectfully ask all those responding to Dr. Graham's query why they feel their choice of surgical revision would actually work? Dr. Graham stated that 3 prior surgeries failed, "all due to non-compliance." The pain the patient has now is from a nucleated lesion/callus submet 2. Why not just debride the callus and enucleate it? Place a dispersion pad on it.

Is the AK cast that was recommended going to make the surgical revision work this time? So what if the screw is palpable? That wasn't the complaint. And while I understand there are many things wrong with the x-ray, I also understand she failed multiple surgeries before and likely she is not a good surgical candidate - so why put both yourself and the patient at further risk? Why would the non-compliance stop this time?

Ideally, you should engage the assistance of your state podiatric medical association.  They have likely been through all of this before, should have the documentation you need, and they can also send an attorney's letter if one should be needed.

RE: Hand Instrument Repair (Michael DiGiacomo, DPM)
From: Paul Busman DPM, RN, Hal Ornstein, DPM

I hate springs on all cutting instruments and routinely remove them from all of my nail nippers and other plier-type instruments. I always felt I was working against the spring. Grasp the handle with your index, middle, and ring fingers, and hook your pinky on the inside of the handle. You can easily open and close the instrument with very fine control.

RE: Sterilizing Bits Between Debridements (Jeff Kittay, DPM)
From: Edmond F. Mertzenich, DPM, MBA

After reading all the different responses to this particular posting, maybe what needs to be done is have either our podiatry colleges do research on this subject to develop standards or have the APMA create a taskforce to improve standards on this practice. This would create uniform national standards that podiatrists should meet for sanitation and air quality. Patients and providers will have a better healthcare environment.

RE: Is It Time to Bring Back Chiropody?
From: Richard Jaffe, DPM (H. David Hottlieb, DPM)

I am sitting in a state of amazement regarding this discussion. Don't you know that chiropodists are no longer called chiropodists? Internationally, they mostly refer to themselves as podiatrists. Led by the British, who receive diplomas as “Chiropodist/Podiatrist” after 3-4 years of education post high school, the FIP which is comprised of 26 counties has also adopted our name.

And who could blame them for wanting some prestige? The British dream of the scope of practice which exists in the U.S. and most of Europe aspires to...
