AT THE COLLEGES
DMU and UNE Announce Partnership to Expand Pathways to Podiatric Medicine

Des Moines University (DMU) Medicine and Health Sciences and the University of New England (UNE), a private university in Maine, have entered into a new partnership that expands pathways for UNE students pursuing careers in health sciences. Through this agreement, students enrolled in UNE's College of Professional Studies Online Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Health and Master of Biomedical Science programs will have the opportunity to pursue a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree at DMU.

Dr. Kevin Smith

As of April 1, eligible UNE students who meet established academic benchmarks will receive a guaranteed interview opportunity with the DPM program at DMU." This partnership reflects our shared commitment to providing clear, supportive pathways for students who aspire to become healthcare leaders," says Kevin Smith DPM, dean of the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at DMU.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
UT Podiatrist Charged With $29 Million Dollar Healthcare Fraud

A federal grand jury in St. George returned an indictment today charging a Utah podiatrist and two nurses who worked for him with fraud after they allegedly submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare for skin substitute services, many of which were medically unnecessary, and resulted in Medicare paying $29 million dollars in claims.

According to allegations in court documents, from July 2021 through December 2025, Ryan Scott Ellsworth, 47, of Highland, Utah; Emily Kelly, 45, of Washington, Utah; and Drake Dell Broadbent, 55, of Santa Clara, Utah, allegedly defrauded the federal healthcare benefit program, Medicare, to fraudulently obtain money for their own financial benefit.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
7 Coding Mistakes That are Quietly Costing Your Practice

Revenue loss in primary care is often driven by everyday coding and documentation habits. These seven common mistakes can lead to reduced legitimate reimbursement without physicians realizing it.

3.  Missing add-on codes or modifiers when payer policy allows them

Some revenue loss occurs not because physicians are unaware of codes but because add-on codes or modifiers are overlooked during routine billing. When documentation supports additional, distinct work — and payer policy allows billing — these services may be eligible to be reported alongside a primary E/M visit.

The problem is often workflow-related. Documentation supports the work, but the billing process fails to capture it consistently. Over time, missing allowable add-ons or modifiers can quietly reduce revenue without triggering denials or compliance concerns.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
What Are Your Chances of an IRS Audit? 15 Audit Red Flags

These red flags could increase your chances of the IRS selecting your return for audit.

11. Taking an early payout from an IRA or 401(k)

The IRS wants to be sure that owners of traditional IRAs and participants in 401(k)s and other workplace retirement plans are properly reporting and paying tax on distributions. Special attention is being given to payouts before age 59½, which, unless an exception applies, are subject to a 10% penalty on top of the regular income tax.

The IRS knows that a substantial number of filers make errors on their income tax returns with respect to retirement payouts, with most of the mistakes coming from taxpayers who don't qualify for an exception to the 10% additional tax on early distributions. The IRS has a chart listing withdrawals taken before the age of 59½ that escape the 10% penalty. Some of the exceptions apply only to IRAs, some apply only to workplace retirement plans, and others apply to both.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM CODINGHELPLINE.COM
Query:  What are the Key Words to Use in E/M Documentation?

In my reading AMA guidance on E/M coding with both the 2021 and 2023 changes, have they provided key words we should document based on the patient's presenting symptoms that drive E/M?

Codinghelpline com Subscriber

Response from Codinghelpline.comIn reviewing AMA guidance, the patient’s condition should be linked to one of the eleven defined attributes. Documentation should explicitly include one of the following descriptors: Meager or limited or negligible; Stable chronic; Acute, direct, well-defined; Stable acute; Acute, direct, well-defined (inpatient or observation); Chronic worsening or progressing; New problem, undiagnosed, potentially high risk; Acute with unanticipated symptoms; Acute complex injury; Chronic severe problem; or Acute or chronic problem/injury posing a risk to life or bodily function.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EDI)
RE: HETS Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Enrollment
From: Michael Loshigian, DPM

All providers and suppliers must enroll in HETS Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to check Medicare beneficiary eligibility. Healthcare providers (including suppliers), vendors, and clearinghouses work together for HETS enrollment. CMS will move to a new HETS trading partner management system on May 11, 2026. Complete the enrollment process to ensure continued access to HETS.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY)
From: Steven Finer, DPM

I really appreciated Dr. Tomczak's extensive article on the history of thought and teaching. In the 1970s, the curriculum started to change at PCPM. MDs were brought in to teach courses such as Internal medicine, orthopedics, neurology, radiology and many more. PhDs taught pharmacology, microbiology, and histology. For the most part, podiatrists taught podiatric subjects. The chiropractic schools are often criticized as to their own teaching of all subjects.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES)
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

Podiatry is unique in some ways and mainstream in others. When my father was in practice, it was a time when podiatry schools were accepting students not academically able to get into medical school. Reimbursements at the time were significantly higher and insurance was not a limiting factor. It was an easier path to a high return on investment.

Fast forward to our somewhat better acceptance into mainstream medicine, advancement in our education and training, as well as scope of practice. This has led to an increase in time, educational costs, and a higher bar for acceptance to podiatry schools. The medical practice environment has slashed the return on investment for everyone. We have inadvertently leveled the playing field while maintaining a narrow scope of practice. This without a doubt has made one’s decision to go into podiatry less appealing.

Orthopedics began as a pediatric deformity specialty. Modern ortho for the most part abandoned the babies, and most ortho practitioners limit their practices to certain joints and body parts. Podiatry is no different. We have evolved, and let’s face it, have painted ourselves into a corner of modern medicine. We are being  outpaced by nurses of all things. We have serious decisions to make about our profession and its leadership. Letting titles, history, and ego stand in the way will be of no help.
