AL Scope of Practice Modernized to Include the Ankle
APMA has announced that the Alabama Podiatric Medical Association (ALPMA) has succeeded in its long-term efforts to modernize the Alabama scope of practice statute. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey (R) signed Senate Bill 28 into law on May 3, updating podiatrists’ scope to include the ankle. The bill will take effect August 1.

Sneakers are Ideally Suited for Nurses: NY Podiatrist
There are several reasons why nurses need to wear the right shoes,” says Bruce Pinker, DPM of New York’s Progressive Foot Care. “Because nurses are typically standing or walking, or at times, possibly running, their footwear needs to fit properly and be comfortable.” He reiterates what you likely already know: sneakers are ideal, and in some cases, clogs make for appropriate footwear.

“Some nurses may be dealing with critical patients who are very ill," he adds, noting that foot pain could prevent nurses from carrying out their responsibilities or being quick to respond to patient needs. "Being able to move adeptly to address a patient's concerns is essential for a nurse, and this action is empowered by wearing proper footwear to encourage effective ambulation,” Dr. Pinker says.

First Reported U.S. Cases of Tinea Caused by Trichophyton Indotineae
Two cases of highly contagious, drug-resistant ringworm infections have been detected in New York City – the first such cases reported in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday. This “infection was first identified in a 47-year-old woman who had developed a bad case of ringworm, also known as tinea, while traveling in Bangladesh,” after “a rash had erupted across most of her body and typical antifungal creams did nothing to alleviate it.” Her “infection turned out to be caused by a relatively new species of ringworm-causing fungus, called Trichophyton indotineae.

Another woman, “had no recent international travel history,” and “neither of the women had underlying health conditions.” The discovery of these “infections is worrying for public health officials as they are the first reported in the U.S., after cases had been reported in Asia, Europe, and Canada.” In particular, “the CDC said the fact that the woman who had no recent international travel history was found to have the infection was alarming, indicating it could be a ‘potential local U.S. transmission.’” As such, “the agency said healthcare providers should be prepared to provide up to 12 weeks of therapy if the fungus that causes the condition is found.

Each shoe has an electronic module embedded under the insole, with sensors that share data via Bluetooth. “We built a technology that functions in each foot, and then the shoes talk together in real time and exchange information,” says Baliston founder Karim Oumnia. “You have a ‘walking DNA’: We all have a way to walk which is different from others.” The underlying tech is already used in podiatrist offices in Europe to help doctors design custom insoles; Baliston took the step of adding it directly to shoes.

Top Six Ways to Increase Patient Visits
Patient visits have a direct impact on the success of your independent practice. Here are six tips from the experts to put into action.
2. Explore Patient-Focused Websites - The new wave of patient-focused websites that provide pricing information (and even the opportunity to pre-pay in some cases) represents an opportunity for practices to be seen by new prospective patients who are actively shopping for services. Laurie Morgan, senior partner at Capko & Morgan, said there are many models for these new websites: some are being launched as stand-alone start-ups, others are services offered by health plans, and, in some cases, even banks are getting in on the action.
So, it's important for practices to do a bit of research to find out which services are reaching patients in their local area. Aside from making sure your practice is listed in all of these places and making sure you're visible to any patient who is shopping, you'll want to verify that these sites are displaying updated information about your practice, including confirmation that they are quoting your fees correctly.

When you receive a request from Ciox, calculate the number of patient requests and multiply it by the amount of money per chart your office has set. Send them an invoice and move on. You will not likely receive payment and it had been my office policy not to send charts requested by Ciox until payment is received.
I retired a few months ago, but was never cancelled from any insurance company for not sending charts to Ciox until they send payment. This has been ongoing for several years. Your obligation should be to Medicare which is being completely ripped off by Ciox and other companies, which has been documented in previous posts.
