TN Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition caused by inflammation of the bands of tissue that connect your heel to your toes. "Symptoms include pain in the bottom of your foot -- at the front or center of the heel bone. You might notice that it’s worse in the morning when you first wake up (first-step pain). And it may happen when you’re standing after having sat for a long time. You’re also more likely to feel it right after exercise," says podiatrist Dr. Caroline Gannon.
|
|
Dr. Caroline Gannon |
"Your doctor can normally tell if you have it just by checking for tender areas in your foot. Often, he can pinpoint what’s causing the pain by where it’s located. He probably won’t do any imaging tests. In rare cases, he might suggest an X-ray or MRI to rule out another cause, like a pinched or compressed nerve or stress fracture in your heel," says Dr. Gannon.

IL Podiatrist Discusses New Book to MS Students
Dr. Richard G. Macdonald recently visited New Augusta Elementary School (NAES) to speak about his newest book Inside the Gates and The Whooping Cough Germ. Macdonald’s father and mother Edith (who was a nurse) used his brothers and twin siblings to test out the whooping cough vaccine. After working with scientists around the world, his parents decided to use their own sons to test the vaccine.
|
|
Dr. Richard Macdonald |
The book explains the experiment and how the experiment developed in “Kid friendly” terms. That vaccine was used for over 35 years before another vaccine was introduced in the 1990s. After speaking to the NAES students, the retired podiatrist from Peoria, Illinois said that he was on his way to Camp Shelby and also to Southern Miss for another presentation. He wanted to visit New Augusta School because he had fond memories of living in a small country town and attending school there.

Aetna is Latest Health Insurer to Pull Out of ObamaCare
Aetna will leave the two remaining states (Delaware and Nebraska) where it had been selling Obamacare coverage next year, making it the latest health insurer to pull out as Republicans say the program is failing and work to dismantle it. The Connecticut-based insurer — third largest in the nation — already said last year it would pull out of 11 states, and earlier this year announced plans to exit Iowa and Virginia.
Aetna has said it expects to lose more than $200 million on individual health plans this year in the four states where it’s still selling the Affordable Care Act plans. That’s on top of the $700 million the company said it lost in the three previous years. Obamacare’s markets are becoming increasingly vulnerable as major health insurers pull out, citing huge losses. Some insurers have stayed in, but raised premiums by double-digit percentages.

5 Video Marketing Tips for Your Practice - Part 3
Video marketing can be an inexpensive and powerful platform to showcase your business. Forward thinking clinics that create consistent videos on a regular basis will not only gain more viewers, but patients. Here are five of my favorite tips to help you effectively use video for your medical practice:
3. Give Your Viewers an Inside Look: One of the most effective ways that you can use video is giving prospective patients the experience of what it's like to become a patient. It can be nerve-wracking to be a new patient; a video can put them at ease by showing them the layout of your waiting room or exam room. Provide interviews of key staff members. Walk-throughs of an actual procedure have been known to get a ton of views in my experience.

Are you still just getting by with worn or outdated equipment?
There's a better way.
Midmark power procedures tables and chairs allow providers to achieve proper medical positioning to help ensure ready access to the patient in a variety of positions. Powered movement of the seat, back and tilt provide flexibility without sacrificing ergonomics for the patient or provider.

Query: Medicare Location Address
I operate a solo mobile podiatry practice in one state, and will soon expand to anther state. Does Medicare require that I maintain an operational business address in both states, or just one of the states?
Troy Harris, DPM, Swansboro, NC
Response: In my opinion, you are required to obtain a separate enrollment as your services are being provided on a regular basis in a different payment area and under different carriers. This is a bit different than house calls (which also presents its special challenges).
I suggest you contact an enrollment specialist to assist you with the special issues presented by this scenario.
