AT THE COLLEGES
TUSPM Students Volunteer at The Philadelphia Broad Street Run

Second and third year students of the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) participated in the finish line medical team tent of the 39th running of the Philadelphia Broad Street Run. Close to 40,000 runners made the 10 mile trek under near perfect weather conditions with cloudy overcast and temperatures in the low 60s.

Temple University Podiatric Volunteer Team

The race ranks as one of the largest 10-mile runs in the country. According to Howard J Palamarchuk, DPM ,TUSPM associate professor, this was Temple's 34th year of participation as race podiatric coverage. Also acting as attending was Dr. Rebecca DeSimone, Temple University Hospital third-year podiatric resident.

PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
HTC Southern California Returns from Nepal Medical Trip

Healing the Children (HTC) Southern California completed its annual foot and ankle surgical camp April 16-20. Dr. Jennifer D'Amico led a bi-coastal team of 12, which included podiatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, and registered nurses to Nepal Orthopedic Hospital (NOH) in Jorpati, Kathmandu, Nepal. The team evaluated children and adults with foot and ankle deformities. The team completed 25 surgeries in 4 days after a busy screening day with over 75 patients being evaluated and treated both surgically and conservatively.

(L-R) Drs Thomas Chang, Kevin Shaw, Jennifer D'Amico, Greg Lara, Rachit Sharma, Rajesh Maharjan, Anish Gyawali, and Alireza Khosroabadi

The team did cases from lipoma resection, clubfoot, flatfoot reconstruction to tendon transfers and hindfoot fusions. Strong fundraising efforts led to the team being able to cover all hospital expenses for the patients from diagnostics to post-operative hospital care. NOH celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and HTC Southern California, with the support of its very generous donors, is proud to bring foot and ankle services to the children and adults of Nepal.

STATE PODIATRY NEWS
SC Podiatrists Could Treat More Under Senate Proposal

The South Carolina Senate on Tuesday advanced a proposal that would allow podiatrists to treat more than just the foot. State Sen. Tom Davis, R-Beaufort, said the expansion is the result of an agreement between the podiatry community and others in the medical field. “Part of the compromise that was reached by the podiatrists and the medical doctors is in regard to the definition of ankle,” he said.

The bill requires that certain podiatric surgery must be performed in an accredited hospital or ambulatory surgery center. Any podiatrist who performs them must be board-certified, have graduated from a three-year residency program and meet the center’s credentialing requirements. The legislation would also create a board to oversee the practice, establishing a joint podiatric surgery advisory committee of the current state Board of Podiatry Examiners.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Common Mistakes of Physician Group Mergers - Part 3

Acquiring another practice can be a powerful tool for your group to achieve growth and build long-term value. There are, however, a few key mistakes that are often made which could be avoided with more thoughtful reflection.

3. Under-utilizing your people to drive change. - Throughout the merger integration process, leaders at each practice should deliberately involve staff from throughout the practice to help facilitate change. The practices should empower employees at all organizational levels to join and lead a volunteer army to accelerate the transference of ideas and inspire the desired culture of the new combined practice.

With so many moving parts throughout the process, empowered employees working as informal networked groups can work with agility and adaptability to help the two physician groups gradually become one.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Fritz Anthony Moeller, DPM

Fritz Anthony Moeller, DPM, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018 at the age of 80. Fritz graduated magna cum laude from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine, and completed a residency in foot and ankle surgery in Detroit. He returned to New Mexico as the state's first residency-trained podiatrist and established a private practice in Albuquerque, where he fought for the hospital staff privileges that all NM podiatrists enjoy today.

Dr. Fritz Moeller

He was a fellow with the American College of Foot Surgeons, a diplomate with the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, President of the NM Podiatric Medical Association, and was appointed to the NM Board of Podiatric Examiners by Governors Carruthers and King.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Cyber Security Insurance

It has often been said, "you can’t have too much insurance," but what is considered reasonable coverage amounts for cyber security insurance? Some professional liability companies are including $50,000 to $100,000 coverage for their professional liabilities clients, but is that enough?
