ACFAS Honors 75th Anniversary with Book Release
It has been 75 years of evolution and progression for foot and ankle surgeons and their national professional association, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). In honor of the 75-year anniversary milestone, ACFAS recently published a commemorative book, The Evolution of a Profession: The First 75 Years of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
|
|
Dr. Jerome Noll and New ACFAS Book |
Written by historian Kenneth Durr, PhD, with Jerome S. Noll, DPM, FACFAS, the ACFAS story is a classic American tale of modest beginnings, a hard-fought evolution and a bright future. The story has 10,000 characters—all the College’s Fellows and Associate members over the past 75 years—who transformed chiropody into foot and ankle surgery and changed the history of American medicine.

NJPMS Keeps Both Patients and Podiatrists Standing: NJ Podiatrist
No matter the condition that Ridgewood-based podiatrist Dr. Jacob Reinkraut is treating, his goal remains the same: to get his patients back on their feet. The Franklin Lakes native and fourth generation physician was recently sworn in as president of the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society (NJPMS). And with that honor, it's not only his patients that he keeps standing, but other doctors in his field.

"Hopefully, more podiatrists continue to support the society which supports them," said Reinkraut, an Upper Saddle River father. "The podiatrists in the society are working and paving the way, and the ones that are not part of the society are getting the benefits, but aren't paying." Reinkraut explained that the society is what makes it possible for podiatrists to continue working. It's what fights for legislation and teaches with continuing education.

IL Podiatrist Comments on Mimimum Wage Proposal
Hoffman Estates village board members Monday unanimously recommended opting out of Cook County laws raising the minimum wage and requiring paid sick days for part-time workers. That agreement was reached despite a spirited and nuanced discussion among the elected officials as well as with a disagreeing resident and businessman. Trustee Gary Stanton initially proposed the village go along with Cook County in raising the minimum wage to $10 per hour on July 1. But in contrast to the county, he suggested keeping it at that level for three years rather than raising it $1 more an hour each year through 2020.
|
|
Dr. Robert Steinberg |
Village resident and podiatrist Dr. Robert Steinberg said Stanton had been on the right track at the start and that the village board shouldn't join other communities in listening only to their business communities and not their residents. "It's unconscionable," Steinberg said. "Of course businesses don't want to pay any more."

MA Podiatrist's Dream to Honor Irish to be Realized
The long-awaited memorial to the Irish who died before they could reach Boston during the great Irish famine and were buried at Deer Island may soon become a reality. The late podiatrist Dr. Bill O’Connell and his wife Rita O’Connell, longtime stalwarts of Boston’s Irish community, spent many years learning about “The Great Hunger,” the famine that ravaged Ireland in the middle of the 19th century, leading to the death of many from starvation, while countless others sought to extend their lives by cramming into sailing ships and setting out for America.
It was a decades-long dream of Bill and Rita to establish a memorial to those long-lost Irish, and in the early 1990s, they gathered some friends to find a way to create a fitting memorial. They researched the history of those who died on the island and discovered that a primitive cemetery there contained the graves of hundreds of Irish, with no proper marking or memorials.
Thanks to the efforts of a new working committee, there will be informative plaques installed, and a series of granite blocks surrounding the cross, with an interpretive sign explaining the significance of the memorial.

5 Video Marketing Tips for Your Practice - Part 2
Video marketing can be an inexpensive and powerful platform to showcase your business. Forward thinking clinics that create consistent videos on a regular basis will not only gain more viewers, but patients. Here are five of my favorite tips to help you effectively use video for your medical practice:
2. Keep Your Videos Short and to the Point: I like to keep videos no longer than 10 minutes. Make sure the video title matches exactly what the content of the video is going to cover. You can break up a long video into shorter and more succinct videos. Again, I love the format of asking common questions about your practice, and you can expand that to answering questions about procedures or medical conditions.

RE: OH Podiatrist Comments on AHCA
From: David P. Luongo, DPM
This is not a Democrat or Republican issue. It is an insurance company issue. They don't want change so they are making the "affordable plans" unaffordable for a reason. To lower costs, the first step was to insure EVERYONE as we did with auto insurance. That, by default, will lower costs for all. Unfortunately, the insurance companies want to profit from all angles since they continue to be unchecked.
Until a non-profit insurance company is formed that only needs to break even, not pay CEO billions and satisfy stockholders, then we are in a bad nosedive. Unfortunately, the powerful insurance companies will not allow this and will cheat, steal, bribe, etc. to prevent anyone taking the golden goose. It's quite a simple problem. Money is the root of all evil and right now it has our country at each other's throats.

RE: OH Podiatrist Comments on AHCA
From: David Gurvis, DPM
To all who are commenting on the “Repeal and Replacement” of the ACA (ObamaCare) and the new (call it what is is) TrumpCare, AKA the American Health Care Bill :Both sides are lying. The Office of the Budget is probably the most accurate. It is disingenuous to dismiss it because it may agree or disagree with your pre-conceived notions,
The media is not fake news. Even Paul Ryan, by the way, agreed that many will lose medical coverage but he considers that a “good thing” as it shows they had a “choice” (NPR radio interview). We need to decide in this country if healthcare is a “right” or not. Your view is as valid as mine if it is well thought out and defended
And finally: When Republicans and Democrats (meaning you and I) stop hating each other’s views so much that all they can think of is their blind hatred of the other sides, then, and only then, will we get any good ideas coming out of Congress on healthcare.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1C | |
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
I would politely remind Dr. Katzen that retired does not mean dead or out of touch. There was mention in his post of politicians being out of their minds to support legislation that would harm their constituents. I posit that precisely that is happening, politicians so drunk with their own power, so dedicated to erasing any trace of a president they despised, that they are indeed willing to pass legislation truly detrimental to the health of their constituents and not interested in the sequellae.
Dr. Lang’s post was completely accurate in its assessment. The ACA is certainly in need of dramatic modification, or even replacement, but only with a single payer system/Medicare for all, with the total elimination of self-serving health insurance companies. Any tweaking around the edges that leaves these do-nothing money takers is doomed to failure, as the rest of the world realized decades ago.
Jeff Kittay, DPM (retired), San Rafael Norte, Costa Rica
