PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
ID Podiatrist Explains Why Arch is Most Sensitive Part of the Foot

Step on a Lego with the ball or heel of your foot and you’ll grimace. Step on the same piece with the arch of your foot, and it’ll be tough to hold back a scream. The reason for the difference in sensitivity: Your foot’s ball and heel pound the ground hundreds of times a day.

Dr. David Blackmer

“These areas take a constant beating and develop thick skin. These callus formations allow the skin to withstand greater stress,” says podiatrist David Blackmer, DPM, founder of Blackmer Foot and Ankle. Your arch, on the other hand, has thinner skin so the nerves underneath are closer to the surface.

PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS
CA Podiatrist Pens 500th Practice Perfect Issue

PRESENT e-Learning Systems has announced the publication of the 500th issue of Practice Perfect. Jarrod Shapiro, DPM began writing about his experiences in podiatric training while still a resident at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan, 10 years ago. Recommended by his residency director Marshall Solomon, DPM, PRESENT decided to try him out at writing a column about the trials and tribulations of undergoing podiatric residency training. That first publication, entitled Residency Rap, continued until Dr. Shapiro completed his residency in 2006.

Dr. Jarrod Shapiro

The eZine evolved into New Docs on the Block when Dr. Shapiro joined a practice as an associate in Lansing, Michigan. Practice Perfect was born when Shapiro moved to Madras, Oregon to join a hospital-based multi-specialty practice, and no longer felt like a “new doc”. It has become a widely read weekly publication, opened by many thousands of readers each week. In 2009, Podiatry Management Editor Barry Block, DPM recognized the value of Shapiro’s writing by publishing a monthly edition of Practice Perfect in the magazine. It is now one of PM's longest running columns.

PODIATRISTS AND PUBLIC HEALTH
More Podiatric Physicians Need to be Involved in Public Health: FL Podiatrist

The Florida Public Health Association recently held its South Florida Regional Conference at Florida International University entitled “Meeting Strategic Public Health Needs & Addressing Health Equity Priorities of South Florida.” Participating was Dr. Chet Evans, Chief Health Innovation Officer for Rollins College.

Dr. Chet Evans and Dr. Celeste Philip, Interim State Surgeon General and Secretary of the Florida Department of Health

Dr. Evans said, “These issues are critical for our profession, I am concerned at our lack of presence at these important public health events that impact the delivery and management of population healthcare in Florida and the U.S. at large. More podiatric physicians need to be involved in public health.”

IN THE COURTS
Nurse Sues PA Medical Facility for Alleged Sexual Harassment

A Luzerne County woman has filed a federal lawsuit claiming she was fired for reporting sexual harassment by a doctor at the Monroe County medical facility where she worked three years ago. Lisa Costa, a registered nurse and healthcare executive from Plains Township, filed the suit in U.S. Middle District Court in Scranton last week.

Costa, the facility’s director of surgical services at the time, claims that on May 14, 2013, a podiatrist made sexually explicit comments about her and her alleged relationship with Coordinated Health’s then-CEO, Mark Holtz. The suit describes the podiatrist's remarks as “a particularly inappropriate, discriminatory, severe, and offensive incident of sexual harassment.”

HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION
CA Medical Board Declares Neutrality On Proposed Doctor Disclosure Law

The 15-member board that monitors physicians in California declared its neutrality on pending state legislation that would require doctors to notify their patients if they are put on probation for serious violations, including gross negligence, sexual misconduct, and felony convictions related to the care they provide. The decision by the Medical Board of California to steer clear of the fray comes despite fierce opposition to the legislation by physicians and other licensed medical professionals.

The bill, authored by Sen. Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo), would also require doctors and other medical practitioners to tell their patients if they are on probation because of a mental illness or other cognitive disability that impedes their ability to practice safely. In its current form, Hill’s bill would require providers to notify patients in writing if they are facing disciplinary actions by the medical board, osteopathic board, podiatry board, acupuncture board, or Board of Chiropractic Examiners for serious offenses that could compromise their ability to practice competently.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
ACA’s Expected Double-Digit Rate Increases Boost Republicans’ Repeal Efforts

Insurers are preparing for Obamacare customers' double-digit rate increases to be announced in coming months, handing Republicans a key talking point as they try to persuade voters to accept a repeal of the 2010 healthcare law. The people signing up for Obamacare so far are sicker than expected, meaning insurers will have to raise rates to cover the costs, in what non-partisan analysts said amounts to a “market correction.”

Even as insurers grapple with a most costly population, they are about to lose some of the supports built into Obamacare that have helped mitigate their losses in the first couple of years of operation. “That could result in many insurers having rate increases that exceed 10 percentage points,” said Cynthia Cox, associate director of healthcare reform and private reform at the non-partisan Kaiser Family Foundation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Billie Bondar, DPM

With payment changes from CMS involving small businesses getting penalized, it compels one to hope that members of APMA are getting proper representation of these concerns by our leaders and attending to this subject with promptness and productivity. I know APMA did such an amazing effort with ICD-10 for members to be ready and confident .

This payment structure change is so very important as well. Please  let members feel that you are there with CMS. The complaining is already getting a lot of press, and the negativity persists. Tell us, APMA, how about it from your perspective. We need to hear from you.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Jay Wenig, DPMRobert S. Steinberg, DPM

Neil, your numbers are backwards on the airplanes. There have been 6 F35s built. There have been 186 F22s, and 171 are operational.

No war since the inception of the airplane has been won without air superiority. Without a stout enough defense, everything else is moot.

Jay Wenig, DPM, Lt Col, USAF, retired, Malrboro, MD

Neil, whatever you do, do not do your math on an airplane!
