PODIATRISTS AND PODCASTS
VA Podiatrist Explains Pronation to Former Olympic Swimmer

Pronation is one of the most misunderstood concepts in biomechanics. Ben Pearl, DPM broke it down for Gary Hall, an Olympic  swimmer and coach. Hall was interested in pronation because it is an essential component for properly executing the breaststroke. Here is his explanation in this short video clip.

Dr. Ben Pearl

Dr. Pearl added that it is also an essential component to skiing to set the inside edge when turning. Pearl said an Australian ski  coach, he interviewed, suggests dorsiflexing the toes upward right before initiating the new turn. This also helps drive the shin forward because of the tension created in the front of the ankle.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
DE Podiatry Group Receives Elite OSHA Honor

Brandywine Podiatry's Wilmington location has been accepted into the OSHA SHARP program, an elite honor that only 1,600 sites nationwide have attained, and only 6 in the state of Delaware. The program was created by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to recognize small businesses that have demonstrated exemplary workplace safety and health practices.

Dr. Christopher Savage (Founder)

Brandywine Podiatry was granted three-year status, which is extremely rare even for the elite SHARP honorees in their first acceptance. Being accepted into the OSHA SHARP program is a great honor for Brandywine Podiatry and a recognition of the hard work and dedication of their employees to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.

CELEBRITY PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist Urges Chris Pratt to Seek Medical Help

A doctor has urged Chris Pratt to seek medical care after the actor uploaded a rather gross photo of his toe. The Guardians of the Galaxy star certainly made people’s toes curl after he uploaded his Met Gala ‘look’ to Instagram. However, his pinkie toe’s unsightly appearance has caused a podiatrist to reach out to the actor and ask that he get it checked out.

Dr. Brad Schaeffer

Brad Schaeffer, DPM a celebrity surgeon and podiatrist who has appeared on TLC’s My Feet Are Killing Me, gave his honest opinion to TMZ, saying that the A-lister probably has a common fungal infection. He told the outlet: “Chris Pratt has an interesting case of Tinea Unguium and I know that sounds crazy but at the end of the day, it’s just straight-up toenail fungus.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
3 Tips for Preventing Patient Burnout

Physicians are experiencing symptoms of stress and burnout at an alarming rate, with nearly two thirds of physicians in a recent survey reporting signs of burnout. In addition to impacting the health and wellbeing of physicians, their burnout can negatively affect their patients’ ability to navigate their healthcare journey. Here are three ways practices can leverage technology to empower patients and minimize burnout:

3. Create flexibility with telehealth

The pandemic breathed new life into telehealth, and today it remains a tool that can balance flexibility and quality care for some specialities. Implementing telehealth services within your practice allows providers to meet patients where they are, especially when an in-person visit isn’t necessarily required. According to a recent study by J.D. Power, a growing number of patients prefer to use telehealth for routine care, such as virtual visits to discuss medication options or test results.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW) - PART 1A
From: Michael Rose, DPM

I strongly concur with Dr. Rubin’s recommendation for an audit system for claims in your practice. In addition, it is possible to set up a photo/history of some key billings. Almost all podiatrists administer care that is uncompensated. Mostly that is a form of basic care that does not have sufficient medical “justification” or is not covered by present rules.

It is possible to photo document those cases, and state in the chart that no charges were made to the patient or Medicare, and none were “authorized.” Then, just tell the patient that their care is not covered, but you “allocate” a certain number of cases/month to uncompensated situations. You can use your cell phone to take pictures of these, and put them on a list.

During an audit, you can show the auditors your uncompensated list, as a part of your in-office documenting and audit process. It is unlikely that they are expecting such a demonstration and will likely be surprised you have it. Your photo documentation creates a difficult enforcement boundary for them.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW) - PART 1B
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

Yes, it is indeed sad that we see our own being indicted and then convicted of third-party insurance fraud. However, the OIG and CMS are usually notified to investigate practitioners when they are suspected of egregious billing practices and errors. There are far more who are civilly punished and have to pay back what still are hefty sums of money without having to serve prison time nor do they make the OIG or lay press publications. It is for this reason that practices, in particular solo or small group practices, need to invest time and money into compliance packages and programs. This is to allow them to keep the hard earned money and to prevent escalation to OIG investigations.

CMS and all third-party payers know that the large groups have healthcare attorneys and teams who keep these practices on the straight and narrow. Otherwise, due to the large amount of...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Ron Freireich, DPM

One of my new favorite quotes is as follows "You just keep getting more of what you tolerate." The medical profession has been tolerating everything Dr. Hrywnak mentions plaguing ASCs and MUCH MORE for decades. So as the quotes states, we just keep getting more of the same thing because we continue to tolerate it. Why would we expect anything else.
