PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
Diabetic Feet Need to be Inspected Every Day: FL Podiatrist

Teaching diabetic patients to be aware of complications, how to avoid them, and the urgency of getting rapid treatment if they occur, has become a key part of the job for podiatrists. Diabetics need to examine their feet every day, using a mirror to see the bottom of the foot if they need to, said Dr. Chris Englert, podiatrist at the Podiatry Clinic in Lake Wales and Winter Haven.

The reason diabetics should examine their feet daily is to detect problems early. "If they have neuropathy or numb feet, their body image ends where they can feel," Englert said. "They forget about their feet." Patients tell Englert that their feet are cold, that they're having night pains, often sharp and stabbing. Often, he said, they put off mentioning those problems, assuming they're caused by arthritis, not realizing they could be dangerous.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
AR Podiatrist's Job is to Keep Runners in the Race

It’s the time of year that many people will lace up their shoes and hit the pavement to run a 5K or marathon, but as much as you train for running long distance, there’s something unexpected that could slow down your pace. “I’ve been constantly running, not doing any strength training in between and started developing tendonitis in my right heel,” competitive runner Chris Bell said.

Dr. Jason Seiter

Bell has been a podiatric patient at Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith for about a year. Jason Seiter, DPM said his job is to keep him in the race. “Chris loves to run and it’s our goal to keep him up and doing that activity,” Dr. Seiter said. Dr. Seiter said ingrown toenails and heel pain are common this time of year since we tend to hibernate in the winter months and aren’t as active.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
OH Podiatrist Sentenced for Wrong Place of Service Billing

A Canfield foot doctor will not spend any time in prison after being convicted of healthcare fraud. During a hearing on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Denver, a judge placed Dr. Anthony Innocenzi on probation for five years and ordered him to make restitution in the amount of $51,313. Innocenzi, who has a foot care practice in Colorado and an office on Tippecanoe Road in Canfield, pleaded guilty in February to a single count of healthcare fraud. The Assistant U.S. Attorney says that the 45-year-old podiatrist billed Medicare for treating patients at two offices in Colorado. However, the government said that the treatment was not actually administered in the offices, but at nursing homes in Grand Junction and Trinidad, CO.

HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION
Re-introduced U.S. House Bill Would Stop ICD-10

Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX), supported by six of his Republican colleagues, has introduced a House bill to block the government-mandated transition to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 diagnostic code set in October. Dubbed the Cutting Costly Codes Act of 2015, the legislation would prohibit the Secretary of Health and Human Services from requiring the medical community to comply with the ICD-10 codes.

Instead, the bill would have the US Government Accountability Office conduct a study "in consultation with stakeholders in the medical community…to identify steps that can be taken to mitigate the disruption on healthcare providers resulting from a replacement of ICD-9 as such a standard."

QUERIES (CLINICAL)

Query: Chronic Calcaneocuboid Pain

My patient is a 71 year old athletically active female whom I have treated for many years for chronic CC joint subluxation. She has had CC joint pain numerous times which has presented as aching pain, mostly in the lateral segment of the foot, with more acute palpable pain over the CC joint. Manipulation via the method invented by Dr. John Mennell has, in all cases, relieved the pain. Placing a cuboid pad on her orthotic has maintained it. The pain has been relieved with this reduction, but more recently, recurrences are more often and somewhat more generalized. Has anyone seen this syndrome and progressive recurrence? What would be the next step in treatment?

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Pre-screening Employment Test

Does anyone utilize any type of initial testing (yes, a sit-down, paper and pencil, 5-10 minute timed test) before interviewing potential job candidates? I am thinking of basic math, maybe a situation or two, ability to communicate effectively, etc. You can't always cover everything in the interview or screening process, so I thought this would be a good way to eliminate candidates before we waste any time training them.
