CPM student Named Student of the Month
Fourth-year College of Podiatric Medicine student Kathryn Bosia was named Student of the Month on her rotation at PIH Health Downey. “Kathryn’s performance during her month-long rotation was truly exceptional,” said Lily Mulroy, DO, PGY-2, Chief Resident, Family Medicine Residency Program, PIH Health Downey. “She was our Student of the Month, and served as a role model for her peers. Her energy and positive attitude were infectious, as she was well liked by her attendings, peers, nurses, and most important, her patients.”

Kathryn Bosia |
Bosia scrubbed into a lot of surgeries and completed post-op notes and progress notes on surgical patients. She will receive her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from WesternU on May 14, 2014, and will then begin a residency program at Silver Lake Medical Center and Kaiser Foundation Hospital – Fontana.

NJ Podiatrist Leads Petition Drive to Save Music Teaching Position
A petition asking the township school board to stop a music teaching position from being cut in September had garnered 763 signatures by this afternoon and is being presented at the board's meeting tonight. Parent Dr. Steve Dribbon posted the petition online, and said more than 450 of the signatures are from district residents. Dribbon is chief of podiatry at Hunterdon Medical Center and St. Peters University Hospital, and a musician — playing trumpet in his spare time with the band BassBoards. His two grown children have careers in the arts, his stepdaughter is a district student, and his wife, Lori, is a longtime music teacher in the schools.
|
Dr. Steve Dribbon |
Dribbon said the district offers less instructional time in the arts than some other comparable New Jersey districts. He worries that one less music teacher will lead to fewer opportunities to integrate music in the curriculum, and to allow students to shine in the performing arts here and at Hunterdon Central.

MA Podiatrist Recalls Treating Pope John Paul II
Dr. Joseph Addante, of St. Anthony Parish in Fitchburg, tells it like this: "March 19, 2003. I was right up with the cardinals, right at the major platform where the pope sits. … It was a thrilling day.” Afterwards, Addante got to meet Pope John Paul II. What did they say to each other? “Not much, just a blessing and ‘You’re named after a great saint,’” Dr. Addante said. “A few weeks later this doctor called me... His Holiness wants his nails cut,’” Dr. Addante said. He said the doctor’s driver picked him up and took him – somewhere. There were enough corridors and stairs that by the time he got there, he wasn’t sure exactly where he was. Security wanted it that way, he figured.
|
Dr. Joseph Addante with Pope John Paul II |
Addante said John Paul II said to him something like, “I know you’re a good surgeon, and I hope this is not below you.” It was a very quiet event, Dr. Addante said; “I did what I had to do and I got out.” What does he think about Pope John Paul II being canonized with Pope John XXIII? “I think these guys are very deserving of canonization,” he said. “They’re both popes of the people. We haven’t had that in a long time. We’re back to that.”

PA Podiatrist Hired by FL City to Upgrade Cable TV Programming
Leesburg, Fl has contracted with Dr. Anna Marie Chwastiak to operate LakeFront TV. The city will pay the television health commentator about $70,000 to operate the channel. In return, she's expected to upgrade the programming and turn it into an operation that supports itself. At the close of a year, the city will examine the agreement again. Dr. Anna Marie, a podiatrist, is a familiar face — she has commented on health issues for The Weather Channel and has a weekly program on Retirement Living TV (RLTV) called "Your Life Redefined."
|
Dr. Anna Marie Chwastiak |
Dr. Anna Marie, who lives in a "green" house she renovated east of Altoona, said she hopes viewers will start to see a change in the quality of the programs in just a few weeks. That's Goal No. 1, she said. "I want to develop programming to feature this area: It's a great place to vacation, and it has antiquing and the lakes and just the natural beauty of the area," she said. "The channel has been sitting there, a diamond in the rough, and just needs to be nurtured."

Few Hospitals, Docs at Stage 2 Meaningful Use, CMS Official Says
Only four hospitals have achieved Stage 2 meaningful use of electronic health records seven months into the reporting period for hospitals enrolled in the federal EHR incentive-payment program, a CMS official reported today. Among physicians and other eligible professionals—who are four months into their reporting year—only 50 have attested to Stage 2 meaningful use, said Elizabeth Myers, policy and outreach lead at the CMS' Office of eHealth Standards and Services, during a presentation to the agency's Health Information Technology Policy Committee.
Those low numbers mean that many hospitals and vendors will be under tremendous pressure in the closing months of their incentive payment years to hit Stage 2 or suffer lower Medicare reimbursements. Physicians and other eligible professionals who have attested to two or more years at Stage 1 of the Medicare EHR incentive program also must step up to Stage 2, but must do so by the end of 2014. The payment year for physicians and other professionals is measured by the calendar year; consequently, their first 90-day attestation period began Jan. 1, 2014.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: On-line Appointments and HIPAA
If your practice website has the ability for individuals to request an on-line appointment, and this request is forwarded to the doctor's email address...does this breach HIPAA rules if the individual is not yet a patient?
Joseph Borreggine, SPM, Charleston, IL
Editor's note: PM News does not provide legal advice. HIPAA privacy rules and regulations only apply to doctor-patient relationships. In general, a doctor-patient relationship is created when a patient knowingly seeks the services of the physician, and the physician knowingly accepts him or her as a patient. The relationship is consensual and mutual, and often described as “contractual.” In this case, since you have not even examined the person filling out the form, HIPAA privacy rules and regulations would not apply.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
From: Matthew H. Sciaroni, DPM
It appears that this is a giant cell tumor of the flexor tendon sheath. These are benign tumors, however, the MRI results indicate that the tumor has eroded the plantar fat pad; therefore, simple excision would not allow regeneration of that protective tissue. A sulcus approach might be in the patient's best interest, with plans to augment the plantar fat pad at that time.
