“Foot spas aren’t a replacement for medical attention if your feet hurt,” says David G. Armstrong, DPM, a podiatric surgeon with Keck Medicine of USC. “But they can feel great and offer real relaxation benefits.”

USC’s Dr. Armstrong says the stress-relieving benefits of a foot massage can, for some, lower blood pressure. Manipulating the feet, he adds, also can help with range of motion around the joints of the ankles and toes. But he advises to proceed with caution, ensuring a foot soak isn’t burning hot and that your feet are dried well afterward. Also, he says those with diabetes or circulation issues should talk to their foot doctor before booking an appointment.

On May 3rd, the world lost a great husband, father, grandfather, and above all - friend. Dr. Thomas Stephen Murray, 72, of Midwest City, OK passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, of which there were many.

Tom loved to teach, serving as residency director for Oklahoma podiatrists. He also served as president of the Oklahoma Podiatric Medical Association and served on its board of delegates. On top of a fruitful professional career, Tom surrounded himself with many friends who would grow to see him as a brother.

I first met Bill in 1990. I was able to attend a ACPSM SCUBA/Dive seminar. It was a great educational experience as well as world-class diving. Bill was an innovator as well as visionary in our profession. I kept up with his seminars for over forty years. This was great for my dive improvement and professional development.

For many years, many of us have felt that the only way to achieve parity with the medical profession is to abolish the DPM degree and give every podiatrist an MD degree. This would effectively make podiatry a subspecialty of medicine and we would consider ourselves "real doctors". Does it really matter in 2025?
When I first graduated from NYCPM in the late '70s, the ability to provide all phases of healthcare was restricted to holders of an MD degree. Gradually over the decades, things have radically changed. I still remember that the only hospital in our area that would allow us to do surgery was a local osteopathic hospital, and it was designated that way because DOs as well as DPMs were not allowed to practice in "MD-run" hospitals.
Today, things have changed. Both DOs as well as DPMs are allowed to practice in the finest hospitals. Physician associates and nurse practitioners are also getting more and more privileges. A PA at a local hospital confided in me that many of the general surgeons will allow her to perform general surgical procedures, skin-to-skin. The bottom line is that it does not matter to most patients what degree you have, so long as you give them excellent healthcare service.

This pertains to an infection and then an amputation allegedly caused by an initial skin "nick" at a pedicure salon. The relevance of this article, in my opinion, is that any of our patients in our offices could also sustain a minor nick or bleed during a palliation visit for toenails, calluses etc. We do not know to what extent and pre-existing health issues this pedicure salon customer had.
When this happens, it should be documented and properly treated. It is very important, now more than ever, with our overly litigious society to have aseptic protocols in place for the types of in-office palliative care podiatrists provide. This should include always gloved technique, cleaned and disinfected treatment rooms, treatment chairs, cabinet surfaces, sterilized instrumentation and burrs, single-use blades and post-debridement inspection of the feet and toenails.
