PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Athletes Should Prioritize Foot & Ankle Health: IL Podiatrist

In the realm of sports medicine, the pursuit of peak performance is a delicate balance with injury prevention. Yet, one crucial aspect often escapes the spotlight... foot care and ankle strengthening. According to the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, a staggering 25% of all athletic injuries involve the feet. "By integrating podiatry into their routine, athletes can ensure comprehensive foot care, a key element for maintaining peak performance and preventing injuries," says Robert Weil, DPM who has treated some of the world’s greatest athletes for the last half- century.

Dr. Robert Weil

"Athletes should prioritize proper foot care, invest in supportive and properly fitting footwear tailored to their sport, and routinely strengthen their feet and ankles while focusing on balance and stability. This is key for athletes of all ages and levels," says Dr. Weil.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
NY Podiatrist is Keynote Speaker at Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony

On April 29, more than 300 people filled the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center to honor the six million Jews killed by the Nazis during World War II. The keynote speaker was survivor Aliza Erber, DPM, 81, a rabbi, a podiatrist, and recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York City College of Technology. She also received the Torch of Freedom Award this year.

Dr. Aliza Erber

An infant survivor born in Holland during World War II, Dr. Erber was hidden from the Nazis in an underground bunker along with other newborns and babies. For two years, she was kept alive on a diet of grass and roots and never saw daylight. She was eventually reunited with her mother after the war and grew up in Israel. In 1959, the family immigrated to the United States.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
7 Ways Automated Coding Can Help Capture Reimbursement

Capturing correct reimbursement is crucial for any physician’s practice. Unfortunately, coding staff shortages, chart backlogs, and guideline changes often lead to denied claims and revenue leakage. While a myriad of solutions have been developed, only coding automation can truly solve the problem. Here are seven ways this AI technology improves revenue capture. But first, it’s important to understand the core reason that coding is a weight on many practices today.

1. Catching Errors - The simple fact is, your coders and physicians will make mistakes occasionally – it’s human nature. Mistakes are especially common when your staff are overwhelmed with a backlog of work or patients to be seen. How does coding automation help? It flags documentation deficiencies early so they can be corrected. For example, the AI technology will catch missed procedures, test interpretations, incorrect E/M code levels, and other inaccuracies.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE)
RE: MA Plan Extras on the Chopping Block
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

In today's issue of Becker's Health Care there were several issues regarding MA plans mentioned. Aside from some reiteration of the news last week that Humana will be leaving the MA market in some areas starting Jan 2025, others announced that some "extras" which MA plans offer over traditional fee for service would be chopped. Why? Because CMS has finally wised up and cut the tiered reimbursement structure which MA plans receive as a monthly stipend from these plans. Perhaps CMS has finally wised up that these plans have been stealing billions of dollars in taxpayer revenue by falsely massaging our data and elevating the risk strategy.

As one MA CEO stated, they are prioritizing profits over members and will be leaving the market in certain areas where they can't make a profit. Others refuse to say which "extras" will be cut as it's too early to predict this for 2025. But you can bet expensive extras such as dental, transportation, and food services will likely be cut. This is exactly what the government will get when they turn Medicare over to privately owned companies to run Medicare.

Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY

RESPONSES COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM

Dr. Udell posits his belief that direct pay medical care may be, in his opinion, unethical. Furthermore, Dr. Kornfeld felt the need to offer a defensive posture to his endorsement of the direct pay model of healthcare. As to the latter, Dr. Kornfeld is the messenger, not the message. He suggests, with good reasons, that the direct pay model may be a preferable means by which to practice podiatry. There is no need for Dr. Kornfeld to assume a defensive posture personally.

The direct pay model has been increasingly adopted in many areas of medicine, such as primary care, plastic surgery, dentistry, and many specialties within medicine. Those who practice traditional insurance-based medicine already practice direct pay medicine to some extent. You charge patients for increasingly larger co-pays. You charge patients for their deductibles. You charge for uncovered services. You charge for uncovered dispensed products. Therefore, the concept of direct patient payment for services provided in the traditional insurance-based healthcare model is not foreign to your practice.

Dr. Udell questions the ethics and morality of direct pay...

RESPONSES COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
RE: The Future of Podiatry (Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD)
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

After the thread on The Future of Podiatry, many DPMs emailed me who are disgusted and fed up with insurance-dependency and hate going to work. Yet, most of them said the same thing to me, "My patients will never pay me!" This is testimony to the fact that many of you do not believe your services have any value. And that is the crux of the reason why you all stay in the system and suffer.

The reality is simple. If you accept insurance and your patients have very little out-of-pocket expense when they see you, why would they pay you? You are all correct. Those patients may like you, but the only reason they come to you is because they can come on insurance.

Your current insurance-pay patients are NOT your patient...

Editor's note: Dr. Kornfeld's extended-length letter can be read here.
