INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Manitoba Canada Podiatrists Praise License to Prescribe

Manitoba’s podiatrists can now prescribe certain medications such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, after years of consultations with the provincial government and advisers from the colleges of physicians and pharmacists.

Dr. Tracy Andrews

The regulations were approved March 31, bringing Manitoba in line with other provinces like Saskatchewan, Ontario and New Brunswick, which have allowed prescribing podiatrists for years, said Dr. Tracy Andrews, who has practised in Brandon since 1994.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW - PART 1
MI Podiatrist Sentenced for Billing Medicare $1.8M Under False Identity

A Michigan podiatrist was sentenced to seven years in prison for orchestrating a healthcare fraud conspiracy that resulted in almost $2 million in false and fraudulent claims being submitted to Medicare, as well as for falsifying records and identity theft. According to court documents, Dr. Kenneth Mitchell, 61, of Wayne County, owned and operated a podiatry practice in Michigan specializing in on-site foot care provided to adult foster home residents. Mitchell had previously been suspended by Medicare for suspicious billing practices, banning him from receiving any Medicare funds while the suspension remained in place.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
3 Tips for Preventing Patient Burnout

Physicians are experiencing symptoms of stress and burnout at an alarming rate, with nearly two thirds of physicians in a recent survey reporting signs of burnout. In addition to impacting the health and wellbeing of physicians, their burnout can negatively affect their patients’ ability to navigate their healthcare journey. Here are three ways practices can leverage technology to empower patients and minimize burnout:

1. Minimize time spent on documentation in the EHR One of the leading causes of physician burnout is poor EHR usability. Physicians spend nearly two hours daily dealing with EHRs outside of working hours, often navigating clunky interfaces, figuring out where to click, entering the same patient information repeatedly into the system, or taking upwards of 100 clicks to update a patient’s care plan. During patient encounters, these systems also force clinicians to spend more time facing a computer screen, significantly reducing doctor-patient interaction and undermining the patient experience.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: An Insightful Moment
From: Shari Lewis Kaminsky, DPM

I wanted to share an insightful moment during a lecture of the Diabetic Limb Salvage Conference I attended in National Harbour, MD last week. Lectures were given by big name thought leaders from big name diabetic limb salvage programs in the U.S. and abroad. SCPM and Loyola University Medical Center/Hines VA were my educational centers. I graduated in 1991 From Loyola with extensive experience with diabetic, vascular, and rheumatic feet.

While sitting in these amazing lectures, I felt a bit sad that I was not doing these amazing things. What then occurred to me is that I am at the first step, trying to educate and inspire my patients to avoid foot ulcerations and infection. My spot is the first line. I treat mostly forefoot deformities. This is mostly where these problems start. Abundant enthusiasm guides me daily in patient care and I love what I do. My profession has provided me with many opportunities to do just this.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: James Koon, DPM

There are a number of companies that will pay you for the silver in your x-rays. BUT MAKE SURE YOU ONLY GIVE THEM THE FILMS SEPARATED FROM THE PAPER JACKETS.

I got rid of 1,200 lbs of x-rays but didn’t take the time to separate them from the paper jackets. The company screwed me by telling me I had just as much weight in paper jackets as I had in films. Clearly that was impossible but what could I do?

They paid for the shipping. I still got about $600.

James Koon, DPM, Winter Haven, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
From: Michael L Brody, DPM

In his recent post, Dr. Rosenblatt makes an assumption: “but I assume that most of it is delegated to describing the ‘craftiness’ of addicts' attempts to get prescribers to get them what they want.” I cannot speak for all courses but the topics in the CME Online course include: What is the patient perspective? Strategies for the reduction of opioid use in the peri-operative patient, Pharmacologic Alternatives for managing pain including CBD, Pharmacology of Opioids, Allodynia – what is it and how to address it, Proper Documentation when Prescribing Opioids, among other lectures.

The lectures and the course is about understanding how and when to prescribe opioid analgesics, and provide better quality of care and proper documentation techniques when prescribing these medications. Education of this nature should be based upon providing actionable clinical information to allow us to be better podiatrists and the program we have created is focused on that goal.
