PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
PA Podiatrist Discusses Signs of Onychomycosis

With the warmer weather, have you broken out those open-toed shoes, sandals, or even flip-flops yet? Before revealing those toes for the season, take a look at your nails. If you see a white or yellow spot under the tip of your toenails, you might have a fungal infection (or something more serious). Fungi are microscopic organisms that can invade the skin through cuts so tiny you can’t see them, says podiatrist Michelle McCarroll, owner of That Foot Doctor and Red Rose Nail Spa, both in Allentown.

Dr. Michelle McCarroll

“They don’t need sunlight to survive and live in warm, moist environments,” she says. “Other conditions, such as psoriasis, can mimic a fungal infection of the nail. Microorganisms such as yeast and bacteria also can infect nails. Fungus is acquired through barefoot contact with a surface that had fungus on it, like a gym, pool, or unsterilized pedicure instruments. That’s why you should always choose a reputable nail spa that sterilizes its equipment.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
NY Podiatrist Provides Summer Nail Care Tips

Summer is pedicure season, so Dr. Michael Gruttadauria, a podiatrist with University of Rochester (UR) Medicine, said there are a few things to keep in mind: Nails can pick up the pigmentation of polish and any chemicals that are in the polish, which will make them more prone to flaking. So, let your nails remain unpolished for a while between pedicures to reduce the risk of fungus.

Dr. Michael Gruttadauria

Don’t make a pedicure a one-stop foot-care visit. Letting a pedicurist remove corns and calluses and address ingrown toenails can cause bigger problems. “I worry about infections,” Gruttadauria said. He advises women to leave those treatments to a medical professional.

PODIATISTS AND HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION

OH Podiatrist Comments on AHCA

Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), who worked as a podiatrist and Army surgeon before entering politics, brought up his background in his own statement about his "yes" vote on the American Health Care Act (AHCA). "As a doctor, I believe it would be malpractice to allow Obamacare to continue to crumble," he wrote. "It's time to get the ball rolling and send this bill to Senate."

Dr. Brad Wenstrup

WCPO reached out to Wenstrup for a comment on assertions (made by news outlets such as New York Magazine) that the AHCA would negatively impact Americans with pre-existing health conditions -- including such ‘conditions' as having been raped or abused, experiencing postpartum depression, or having given birth via Caesarean section. "Providing care for victims of violence, particularly those who have suffered sexual violence, must always be a priority," he said. "This bill treats all pre-existing conditions equally and makes sure states can only obtain a waiver if they have a federal or state high-risk pool in place to ensure patients with pre-existing conditions are able to get affordable coverage."

FUTURE PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
RI College Golfing Great Plans to Attend Podiatry School

Eric Marchetti has had more than his share of birdies and eagles off of the Pt. Judith Country Club in representing the University of Rhode Island golf team. The Rhody Ram senior from North Attleboro was one of 10 student-athletes in the state of Rhode Island’s collegiate community to be cited as a “Distinguished Scholar” by Governor Gina Raimondo and the state legislature.
Eric Marchetti

With his academic workload completed and readying for commencement exercises at URI, Marchetti is also planning the fairways of his future, intending to pursue a career as a podiatrist. Marchetti will take a sabbatical year to prepare for the MCAT, the medical college entrance examination, then apply to several of the nine medical schools which specialize in podiatry, another four-year commitment to the sciences. “It’s a long process.”

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Aussie Podiatrist Provides Advice on Maintaining Foot Health

Jeffery Jenkins, a director and podiatrist at OnePointHealth and member of the Australian Podiatry Association, provides some simple advice on maintaining your foot health. Wash your feet every single day. Even if your feet look clean, washing them helps keep infection-causing bacteria at bay. Use warm, not hot, water and don’t soak them for more than 10 minutes or you may risk drying out the skin, which can lead to cracking. Make sure you dry well between your toes, as failing to do so can invite an outbreak of ‘athlete’s foot’.

Jeffery Jenkins

Moisturize, but not too much – Use an unscented cream if the skin feels dry or is cracked, but wipe off any excess and don’t put the cream between your toes because the skin there needs to stay dry to prevent infection. A dusting of talcum powder, particularly between the toes, can help you feel more comfortable if your feet sweat a lot.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Healthcare Fraud 101: Under False Claims Act - Part 7

7. All internal investigations share a few common threads. Counsel will interview your employees to find out what happened. Counsel will also review the relevant documents, internal policies and emails, and research how all of these facts fit into the legal framework. Depending on the size of your practice and the conduct at issue, this investigation can take weeks or even months. It can be scaled to your budget, but you should be prepared as this is always an expensive undertaking.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Chris Seuferling, DPM

I wish Dr. Harkless a happy and well-deserved retirement. When I think of Dr. Harkless, the word "passion" comes to mind. Anyone who has been in his presence or heard him speak knows what I am talking about. Unknowingly, he was an instrumental part in motivating me to continue with podiatry school when I was a 2nd year student at OCPM back in 2000. I was in the middle of an internal struggle whether to continue with podiatry school or quit. He came to our school to speak on diabetic foot care for an evening lecture. His passion for podiatry and how we can impact our patients' lives struck an emotional chord with me. After that evening, my doubt was gone and my motivation fueled. I have never looked back.

A couple of years later, I spent a month externship with him at his University of Texas Health program in San Antonio, Texas.  A month of Hell, but the most valuable month of training I ever had. This experience laid the foundation and gave me my "toolbox" for evaluating and treating diabetic foot ulcers. Thank you, Dr. Harkless and the best to you in retirement.
