NYCPM/Touro Health Fair Brings out Hundreds of New Yorkers in Harlem
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) participated with the Touro College of Medicine, both in Harlem, in a large health fair at the Adam Clayton Powell (ACP) Building on May 2nd. The event brought out several hundred New Yorkers including dozens of state workers from the ACP Building.

In addition to foot screenings, there were an array of other health and wellness screenings and community resources available. Svetlana Lopata, DPM from the NYCPM faculty provided medical oversight too several students who conducted the foot screenings. NYCPM Students Rivka Kesler and Nikki Hammond organized the student participants.

Annual Biomechanics & Equinus Masters Class Held
Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, Patrick DeHeer, DPM, and Ms. Roberta Nole (Inventor of the 24 Foot Typing System) hosted their Annual Biomechanics & Equinus Masters Class May 2-3, 2025 at the Sheraton Bradley Airport Hotel in Windsor Locks, CT. The conference featured lectures, hands-on biomechanics workshops, and interactive Q & A panels on topics as the pediatric and adult flatfoot, orthotics prescription writing, and equinus evaluation and treatment.

Conference organizer, Dr. DeCaro stated, "Attendees were able to get the A-Zs of running a successful foot orthotic program, most importantly helping patients get better by understanding the biomechanics behind everyday chief complaints. This seminar trained practitioners of all types from around the world on foot typing, prescribing OTS, the importance of treating equinus, and how to grow an orthotics practice.

NY Podiatrist Lectures at OSC Annual Meeting
The Ontario Society of Chiropodists (OSC) held their annual meeting May 1st-3rd in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. Samantha Landau, DPM, MPH, Assistant Professor at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine at Touro University in the Division of Orthopedics Sciences, was a featured presenter.

In her lecture titled, "The Age of Onset of Pedal Pathology in an Adult Patient Population", Dr. Landau dispelled myths and misconceptions regarding the premise that the excessively pronated child's foot is outgrown on its own. She urged that based on years of observation, investigation, and analysis; all agreeing with reasons that this foot should be aggressively and conservatively managed. She reviewed the results of a new study that determined the age of onset of musculoskeletal problems in the untreated adult to be at 31 years of age.

Pedicure at Dirty Spa Leads to Amputation for MD Dad
Glenn Morris, 54, spent $270 on a spa trip in 2017 to reconnect with his wife, Melissa. They indulged in side-by-side manicures and pedicures. During the treatment, they noticed Morris sustained a small cut on one of his left toes. The next day, Morris said his second toe had “swollen up” to the size of his big toe. This infection continued to fester, resulting in multiple amputations. This past January, Morris underwent amputation of his left leg right below the knee.
Morris encourages people to see a podiatrist or other medical professional for foot care, and shares while he’s recovering from the amputation, “I look at my life now going forward advocating for other people in my situation so that they can have access to the activities I like to do like golf, swimming, and fishing.”

7 Ways to Turn Every Visit into a Warm Welcome
These strategies draw on real-world lessons and can be phased in without derailing workflow or budgets.
1. Reimagine the First Impression
An uncluttered, well-lit waiting area signals safety and professionalism. Start with a walkthrough at different times of day: Are chairs torn? Magazines dated? Lighting harsh? Secret-shopper calls and in-person visits expose issues staff may overlook. Small fixes such as fresh paint, live plants, phone-charging stations and kid-friendly corners deliver outsized goodwill, while mirrors at phone operators’ desks encourage a “smile as you speak” tone patients notice.

RE: Do We Really Have a Medical Degree?

Podiatrists, as of late, commonly deliver unreferenced advice in local newspapers on topics like the potential catastrophic health effects of community bowling shoes. Dentists are guilty of the same veiled advertisements about same day versus delayed dental implants. For the podiatrist, at least, there is usually a sentence or two devoted to the podiatrist’s education. It asserts that Dr. Jones received his or her medical degree from Kent State University or Temple University, but seldom Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine or Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. A fellowship might also be mentioned at a medical school with a reputation as being difficult to get into. Often these schools also have a reputation as a top flight destination, a combination large stadium and a larger name, image, and likeness (NIL) pocketbook.
Should we use the phrase, “…received her medical degree from Kent State” in the media? Clearly you and I know the truth. But to take the issue one step further, is a DPM degree a medical degree? Dentists can receive a DMD...

Sad to see the news about Bill. We shared many days and nights together as members and presidents of the AAPSM Board. He was a leader in the world of podiatric sports medicine during its early days.
