IN THE COURTS
Panel Boots Podiatrist's Malpractice Suit Over Biz Buyout

The New Jersey Appellate Division on Thursday refused to revive a podiatrist’s suit against his former practice and the practice’s attorney, reasoning that the doctor disregarded a court order over the deposition of his own onetime lawyer.

A Union County Superior Court judge had declared that Dr. Jimmy T. Trang waived his attorney-client privilege with his former counsel Mark Abruzzo, who was summoned for a deposition by Affiliated Podiatrists of South Jersey and their attorney Vasilos J. Kalogredis in Trang’s suit against them, when Trang’s partnership at Affiliated ended in 2012. But Trang’s current counsel kept asserting that privilege, preventing Abruzzo from giving information during the deposition, a three-judge panel found. Jimmy L. Trang v. Ronald Markizon et al., case no. A-4334-15T1, in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division.

TRANSITIONING TO PRACTICE
Navigating the Waters from Residency to Practice - Part 1

Residency training consists of a minimum of three years with an optional fourth year fellowship.  During training, residents encounter numerous options and offers to either purchase, merge, or become an associate within a practice. What questions do you need to ask? What is best for you: private, buyout, associate, or super group? How do you decide what is best for you and your family? All of these questions can be answered and your future can be solidified with the methodology of pure practice management and expertise.

As you enter the practicing phase of your podiatric career, there will be exciting opportunities awaiting your arrival. Navigating these opportunities can be exhausting and frightening at the same time. Utilizing the following methodology to guide you during your experience can alleviate most of the anxiety that will manifest during this phase of your career.
Questions:
1. Do you prefer a buyout, partnership, or associate position?
2. What area of the country do you want to practice in?
3. What benefits does a super group offer that a private or partnership practice does not offer?

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Common Reasons Your Claims are Bouncing Back - Part 4

Billing is a complex and often tedious procedure—especially with ICD-10 codes. However, the reasons for returned and delayed claims often boil down to a few basics. Here are some of the most common billing mistakes practices make, and how to make sure your practice avoids them.

4.   Let Me See that One More Time

Claims are increasingly denied because the patient’s coverage has been terminated or the plan or payer has changed. Even though most of the time everything is just as it was the last time the patient came in, you should ask to see the patient’s insurance card at every encounter. “People change insurance plans more often than they used to,” says Cantrell. “It’s a simple thing, but important.” Olson agrees, and adds, “If you do this, you should never have a claim denied for “policy terminated”.

Lawyers do not bill Medicare for billions of dollars. Lawyers aren't the ones ripping off Medicare. And Florida is the epicenter for Medicare fraud. Don't take it so personally.
