VA Podiatrist Warns of Dangers of Skateboards
Children and young adults love the thrill of skateboarding. They learn to master their skills of "riding the rail" and "catching air." But according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), such tricks, while fun, can be physically demanding and cause serious foot and ankle injuries.
|
Dr. Jennifer Purvis |
Virginia-based foot and ankle surgeon, Jennifer Purvis, DPM, FACFAS, advises skateboarders to use caution and wear protective gear, including properly supportive shoes, when skateboarding. "Skateboarding can be particularly hard on your feet and ankles because of the impact caused when performing jumps and tricks," Dr. Purvis explains. "Skateboarders should be aware that the strain from repetitive, forceful motions can also cause painful foot and heel conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bone spurs, and Achilles tendonitis, which may require more intensive, longer-term therapies," she said.

PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN CAUSES |
CA Podiatrist Chairs Disaster Relief Effort to Nepal
Dr. Marc A. Benard is the current Chair for Disaster Relief for Rotary International’s District 5280, which is composed of 63 clubs. Benard and the district are currently mobilizing their disaster relief effort to handle both monetary donations and donations-in-kind to this devastated area.
|
Dr. Marc Benard |
No stranger to International humanitarian service, Dr. Benard (Co-Director of the Baja Project for Crippled Children/Operation Footprint) organized his Rotary district’s disaster relief effort to the Philippines in late 2013 and 2014, where 500,000 people were victims of Typhoon Yolanda. With the economic assistance of his Rotary district, a co-venture with Help The Children and The Peace Project resulted in over 40 homes constructed on northern Cebu Island.

IL Podiatrist to Visit Site Where His Father Liberated Concentration Camp Survivors
His father did not discuss Ebensee concentration camp. Museums had no record of the unit that liberated it in 1945. Despite those hurdles, Dr. Richard G. Macdonald did not lose interest in discovering more about the Austrian camp and the prisoners saved by his late father, Hugh Macdonald, and his military colleagues. For the liberation’s 70th anniversary on May 6, Richard Macdonald will visit Ebensee with a group of 20 survivors, liberators, and relatives, along with thousands who migrate there every year to commemorate.
|
Dr. Richard Macdonald (Photo: Austin Humphreys |
Macdonald, a retired podiatrist and Army veteran, authored a book called Inside the Gates about Ebensee and his father’s contributions. Hugh Macdonald was a Rush University-educated doctor, World War I veteran, and Peoria native, and a commanding officer in the 139th MASH Hospital who was called up from the reserves for the Second World War. He was a commanding officer that assisted in freeing nearly 17,000 prisoners.

OUTSIDE INTERESTS - PART 1 |
CA Podiatrist is Angels Longest Season Ticket Holder
Before Trout manned center and before Spiezio hit his World Series homer; before Ryan threw bullets and Fregosi and Knoop ever turned 2; before the team played a single game – Dr. Tom Amberry was an Angels fan. He bought season seats in January 1961 – from Gene Autry, placing his check directly into the hand of the team’s founding owner. “I think it was $360.” Amberry explained all this during a recent night game against the Oakland A’s, a near sellout. He’s part of a very tiny, very unofficial club, made up of people who don’t really know each other even though they’ve met 81 times a year for 55 years.
|
Dr. Thomas Amberry (photo: Matt Masin) |
Amberry, a 92-year-old retired podiatrist from Seal Beach, is one of the handful who still receives his tickets from the team and who still goes to games himself, albeit only a few a year these days. The 6-foot-7 former basketball standout still gets around, but with assistance. Sometimes he uses a walker, sometimes he uses a cane, (fashioned out of a baseball bat, naturally).

OUTSIDE INTERESTS - PART 2 |
Museum Features Exhibit by NJ Podiatrist
Sunday May 3rd marked the opening of Botanica Magnifica: Portrait's of the World's Most Extraordinary Flowers and Plants by Bayonne-based photographer Dr. Jonathan M. Singer. Singer has always had a passion for photography. He works with an incredibly powerful and color-perfect Hasselblad digital camera, an Iris printer, and various special techniques, such as the White Tulip process. He developed this process to create an unparalleled array of astounding botanical photographs of rare and exotic flowers and plants near extinction. He often captures an image in a single shot described as a "glimpse into creation."
|
Dr. Jonathan Singer at the opening reception |
It is Singer's aim to provide a marriage of art and science that will help us to understand the urgency to conserve the world's increasingly endangered biodiversity. He worked as a research collaborator with the Department of Botany at the Smithsonian Institution National
Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. He was distinguished as a Hasselblad Laureate Award winner based on his "major contribution to fine art photography and to our perception and appreciation of the botanical world" and has received the Carl Linnaeus Silver Medal.

ON THE INTERNATIONAL LECTURE CIRCUIT |
Podiatrist Presents a Poster At European Infectious Diseases Meeting
Warren S Joseph, DPM presented a poster at the European Congress on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) last week in Copenhagen, Denmark. ECCMID is one of the largest meetings of its type, drawing over 10,000 attendees from around the world. The poster was co-authored with Darren Culshaw PharmD members of the Medical Affairs team at Cubist Pharmaceuticals.
|
Dr. Warren Joseph at ECCMID |
The poster was titled "Tedizolid versus Linezolid for Treatment of Acute Bacterial Skin and Skin Structure Infections of the Lower Extremity—Pooled, Retrospective Analysis of Two Recent Phase 3 Trials." It looked for any differences between efficacy of the two study drugs in the treatment of lower extremity infections vs. infections elsewhere in the body. No difference was found. This is a potentially important finding since there is a generalized belief that lower extremity infections may be more resistant to antibiotic therapy.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
4 Ways to Handle Cyber Conflict and Negative Reviews - Part 4
Electronic remarks can be hurtful, to both your pride and your practice. Here are four ways to handle negative electronic interactions and potentially detrimental online reviews.
4. Hire a professional.
At some point it may become necessary to consult an online reputation management firm to help you undo the damage others have done to your status. These companies specialize in reversing poor rankings and removing damaging images and reports. But beware! Some online reputation management companies have been reported to have less than stellar business practices themselves.
No one is immune to digital disrespect. While potential patients will check you out on a variety of virtual platforms, including doctor rating websites, most will take note of the recommendations that appear on your own website and the other online and social media profiles you control. Think about asking patients to provide you with endorsements that you can share publically (while maintaining confidentiality, of course). Then add positive comments from colleagues and staff to round out your cyber profile.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: Ira M. Baum, DPM
No treatment is always effective. I have used the PiezoWave2 system by Richard Wolf Medical (No affiliation with me) for about two years. After four sessions, 48 hours apart, with some orthopedic appliance (orthotics or CAM walker with total contact Plastazote insole in foot bed of CAM walker), and modification of activities, most patients are 85-90% better by the end of the treatment. A small percent need a second series of treatments. That is my experience. For the science behind the treatment and its use, I refer you to PiezoWave2 and recommend that you review the scientific literature. Regarding reimbursement, I strongly recommend not to pursue insurance reimbursement for this treatment.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B |
From: David Zuckerman, DPM
I agree with Dr. Udell's comment about making smart business decisions when purchasing any type of equipment for your practice.
Presenting procedures in the best interest of the patient is our profession. We need to stop referring to ourselves or other doctors as "crackerjack salesmen" when presenting a procedure to our patients. We need to recall and realize that as doctors, we are educators. We educate our patients in the best...

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day
|
Worn in the Avengers: Age of Ultron? |
Cartoon movies are very popular in Japan. This collection was inspired by the cartoon movie Robot. It's a very popular category of cartoon film. "When I was considering a form of a robot's leg, their feet are wider than usual. Because they are huge, they need stability. I want you to wear these shoes and feel confident, as if you fight riding a robot against an evil enemy. Be strong and beautiful, 2015." - Wataru Sato
