Seek Treatment for Bunions to Alleviate Pain, Increase Mobility: FL Podiatrist
According to Amber Morra, DPM, "We have minimally invasive surgical options for patients who have relatively small bunions and don't have any hypermobility to their bunion. Then there are fusions, which we do when a patient has significant arthritis with their bunion. During this procedure, we fix the bunion and fuse the joint. And then there's Lapiplasty, which is a 3D correction of the bunion that returns the entire bone to normal alignment and secures the unstable joint with titanium plates. "The type of surgery that is best for the patient depends on the severity of the bunion and the lifestyle of the patient, and whether or not arthritis is a contributing factor."
|
Dr. Amber Morra |
Most bunion surgeries are done on an outpatient basis under light sedation with a nerve block. The surgery itself only lasts about 35 minutes, and the patient is home the same day. "The good thing about all these modern procedures is that we are correcting it based on the apex of the deformity, so the risk of recurrence is extremely low," Dr. Morra said. "The patient is up and walking with a foot boot the same day. Generally, it takes about six to eight weeks to fully recover."

PODIATRISTSIN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
TX Podiatrist Re-elected to School Board in Tight Race
Fort Worth Independent Sschool District voters appeared to be sticking with whom they know on the school board. Incumbent Camille Rodriguez, DPM faced a tight race against educator Amanda Inay for the District 1 seat, representing northwest areas of Fort Worth ISD. Dr. Rodriguez secured 53.5% of the vote to Inay’s 46.5%
|
Dr. Camille Rodriguez |
Rodriguez, a podiatrist, will likely see her second full term on the board after serving as trustee from 2004 to 2008 and returning to fill an unexpired term in 2022. The clash between Inay and Rodriguez was the most hotly contested Fort Worth ISD school board race this cycle. Nearly $60,000 in contributions — most of which went to Inay — have flowed through the race.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
Supportive Footwear Can Reduce Plantar Fasciitis: NY Podiatrist
In some cases, specifically mild cases of plantar fasciitis, supportive footwear can be beneficial to fix the condition, according to Bruce Pinker, DPM. "Footwear that possesses added medial arch support with additional cushioning and shock absorbing qualities can possibly reduce the discomfort of plantar fasciitis; however, usually more attention is needed," Dr. Pinker says. "But other options are usually more effective like physical therapy, custom-made orthotics, cortisone injections, and aggressive stretching."
|
Dr. Bruce Pinker |
Dr. Pinker also suggests that people should consider switching to specialty shoes or custom orthotics for plantar fasciitis relief if they have tried changing their footwear and have stretched considerably. "If symptoms persist, specialty shoes or custom orthotics should be considered to find relief. But depending upon the severity of plantar fasciitis (mild, moderate, or severe), it may require a few weeks to notice relief of symptoms," he adds.

STATE PODIATRY NEWS |
WV CRNAs May Administer Anesthesia in Cooperation with Podiatrists
West Virginia enacted legislation that allows more autonomy for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to practice anesthesia care. With the passage of Senate Bill 810, 44 state legislatures have determined that physician supervision of CRNAs under the nursing laws is unnecessary.
On April 30, West Virginia Senate Bill 810 concerning CRNA practice was signed into law by Governor Patrick Morrisey. Introduced at the request of the West Virginia Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (WVANA), the law removes the requirement for CRNAs to practice “in the presence and under the supervision” of a physician or dentist. The law now indicates that CRNAs “may administer anesthesia in cooperation with a physician, dentist, or podiatrist.” The law defines “cooperation” to mean that the CRNA “and the physician, dentist, or podiatrist work together as a team with each contributing an area of expertise at their individual and respective levels of education and training.”

CODING & BILLING Q&A's FROM THE DOCTORLINE.COM |
Query: Ring Removal
Not an everyday event - but I removed a toe ring that was stuck. There was no vascular or soft tissue damage. I found a code for ring removal for the finger. I would think that the finger code would not be appropriate.
Jeffrie C. Leibovitz, DPM
Response from thedoctorline.com: A ring could be considered a foreign body or object, but it seems the service is just medical management of an acute uncomplicated problem. If an established patient, I feel you bill E/M as CPT 99213 or New patient 99203.
As for a procedure, if you had to anesthetize the digit/toe, then I suggest billing the unlisted procedure CPT code 17999 - Unlisted procedure, skin, mucous membrane, and subcutaneous tissue, if you feel it is a procedure.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY
Additional coding and billing questions and responses can be found at thedoctorline.com.
