AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Announces First Recipients of Steven J. Levitz Scholarship

The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) has awarded Steven J. Levitz Scholarships in memory of  its beloved  faculty member. Dr. Levitz graduated from 1979 and then joined the NYCPM Orthopedics Department until his untimely passing in June 2023. Dr. Levitz loved podiatric medicine, but it was his passion for orthopedics and biomechanics that was most notable and evident when treating patients, teaching students, and interacting with colleagues.

L-R) Kai Higuchi, Ronald Delannoy, Stephanie Bogda, Dr. Loretta Logan, Opemipo Akin-Adejimi, and Michael Deitrich.

As part of this award, the students were also presented with a newly published 3-volume set of Practical Biomechanics for the Podiatrist written and donated by Richard L. Blake, DPM, MS. These books represent Dr. Blake’s life’s work in the field of biomechanics, podiatry, and sports medicine, and are invaluable not only to the practitioner, but also to students and residents alike.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist Discusses Holistic Treatment of Tailor's Bunions

“Do not let pain persist for more than a week before seeking professional help,” says holistic podiatrist Robert Kornfeld, DPM, who practices in New York. “Unlike other parts of the body, when a pain syndrome begins in the foot, it is still going to be beaten against the ground thousands of steps every day.” Getting help sooner can ward off chronic inflammation.

Dr. Robert Kornfeld

“Warm soaks can be helpful,” says Dr. Kornfeld. The warmth relaxes tense, stiff muscles surrounding the affected joint, which can take some pressure off a tailor’s bunion. Plus it boosts healing blood flow to the area. Simply fill a large bowl or basin, add a scoop of muscle-relaxing Epsom salts (if desired), then soak your foot for 15 to 20 minutes as needed. Dr. Kornfeld says topical liniments designed to ease pain can tamp down the discomfort of a tailor’s bunion. Consider opting for a cream made with capsaicin, the compound that spicy peppers their heat. When applied topically, capsaicin helps block pain signals.

OBITUARIES
RE: The Passing of Richard A. Buratti, DPM
From: Dawn Buratti

With much sadness, I announce the passing of Richard A. Buratti, DPM on March 30, 2024, after a four-month battle with pancreatic cancer, at home with his family by his side. Dr. Buratti served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1962. He went back to school, then graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1971. He joined the practice of Arthur Monaco, DPM, from whom he later acquired both his practice and home in Northridge, California. Together with his wife and office manager, Ilona, they served and cared for the San Fernando Valley community in which they lived for over 31 years.

Dr. Richard Buratti

From 1972-1990, Dr. Buratti volunteered as a clinical instructor in the Department of Podiatric Surgery, LA County-USC Medical Center; also referred to as The Foot Health Center. It was here that he cultivated his unique style of ...

RESPONSES COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Elliot Udell DPM

This debate over direct pay vs. insurance company pay is boiling down to two issues. 1) Is it ethical to not accept insurance for payment for medical services? 2) Can a professional whose practice is dependent on patients coming via insurance companies survive if he or she were to suddenly convert to a direct pay model?

As to ethicality of direct pay, on one hand we took an oath to help and not harm patients. On the other hand, overhead expenses in medical offices is extremely high and rising. In our practice, if patients don't have insurance and cannot afford our services, we have opted to either not charge anything or reduce our fees so as to make it affordable for the patient. As to whether our practice or any other podiatric practice could survive a sudden complete change to "direct pay" is questionable. Advising people to take that risk is problematic and might even border on being unethical.

Lastly, debates on this forum are important and often highly educational. We should keep debates on the topic, respect different points of view, and prevent debates from devolving into ad hominem attacks on any practitioner.

Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

Here is another "defensive" post which completely misses the point of what I shared. So, Dr. Tomczak, since you dragged me back into this discussion, let me enlighten you as to where I come from. First of all, I did deviate from conventional medicine long ago as I found that functional medicine did a far more reliable job of getting my patients well, especially the chronic pain patients who had been failed by many other doctors. I was so happy with this paradigm that I put a seminar together for our profession to teach what I had already learned. This was back in 2002. I wasn't so upset that they did not go over well and few sought to learn it. What I was more disgusted by was the level of vindictiveness in this profession.

Podiatrists who never met me and had no idea what I was doing for my patients chose to slander me online. Local podiatrists told patients very negative things about me, again, with no clue as to what I was doing in my office. My own NYSPMA also put me in harm's way back then. So I decided to step away from podiatry and...
