AT THE COLLEGES |
Western U Podiatrists Volunteer at Care Harbor
Hundreds of thousands of Southern California residents are without health insurance and do not have a medical home. The problem is staggering and requires a massive response. Care Harbor has addressed this need by holding nine free mega health clinics in downtown Los Angeles over the past several years, serving about 25,000 patients and providing close to 140,000 free services for an estimated value of care exceeding $20 million. Western University of Health Sciences, in collaboration with other major local institutions, answered the call to help bring Care Harbor to Pomona.
|
Dr. Chandler Hubbard |
College of Podiatric Medicine alumna Chandler Hubbard, DPM ’18, volunteered as a WesternU student at Care Harbor LA and came to Fairplex as a first-year podiatry resident at Chino Hills Medical Center. “I decided to volunteer because as a student I volunteered and gave back to my community in Los Angeles. I was given the opportunity to be here and I wanted to give back to the community surrounding Pomona and WesternU,” Hubbard said. “To be able to give back the things that I learned there to the community around me is something that is near and dear to my heart.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
TX Podiatrist Discusses Pedicures
It’s officially sandal season. Everyone should be getting a pedicure on a regular basis. According to podiatrist Charlton Woodly, DPM, regular foot care is important for your overall health. “A lot of diseases actually manifest themselves in the feet,” he says. “If you don’t take care of your feet, and you lose the ability to walk without pain, it can really impede your life.”
|
Dr. Charlton Woodly |
Depending on how fast your toenails grow, you can get a pedicure as often as you want, as long as it’s done safely. “The average person should get one at least once a month,” says Dr. Woodly, but more power to you if you want to go more often. To make sure the place you’re going is good, make sure they always use instruments from a new, unopened package for each procedure, that you can clearly see the license of the person performing your treatment, and that they should never attempt to cut out or remove an ingrown toenail (“it’s not in their scope of practice,” he says.)

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
Diabetics Should Not Walk Barefoot: NY Podiatrist
For people with a loss of sensation in the feet due to diabetic neuropathy, foot covering is crucial. “Neuropathy can lessen your ability to detect a harmful object,” says podiatrist Bruce Pinker, DPM, a fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association in White Plains, New York.
|
Dr. Bruce Pinker |
Why does that matter? Diabetes can weaken the immune system, especially when blood glucose isn’t well managed. That makes it more difficult to fight off minor infections, so even small cuts are at a greater risk of becoming difficult-to-treat wounds. “Even if you have an injury on your foot that is a few days old, you risk exposure to bacteria on a sharp object or a surface you walk on,” says Pinker. “That may cause a potentially dangerous infection.” And without pain to alert you to the presence of the wound, an infection can spin out of control quickly, which could ultimately result in the loss of a toe or foot.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
When to Consider Succession Planning - Part 2
You might feel a little uneasy about starting the discussion about selling your medical practice. Your practice is your baby, and the thought of letting go can be overwhelming. However, the truth is that failing to plan is a plan to fail when it comes to your practice exit strategy. Everyone thinks of their future, but they don’t always take active steps in the present to prepare for what they want tomorrow. Here are several reasons why you should start the succession planning conversation today.
2. You have personal health issues - Personal health issues are pulling you away from the practice. When your personal health is in decline, it can be difficult to continue business as usual. As the practice owner, you don’t need the undue stress caused by juggling an illness and the medical practice. Furthermore, your priorities might change if you find your health or the health of a loved one declining. Spending time away from the practice may be best for you personally, but it will have a direct negative effect on your practice’s revenue and daily operations.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) - PART 1A |
From: Keith Gurnick, DPM
I have rarely seen any patients who have come to me after having a laser toenail treatment or multiple repeat laser toenail treatments for "fungal appearing" toenails, tell me they are satisfied with the results. These patients had laser treatments done by either a podiatrist or a dermatologist, or at a cosmetic or aesthetic clinic setting. They tell the same story, they either refused or were not offered oral or topical conventional medications, and the laser treatment(s) were presented as a "cure" or solution to the problem that if it works, their toenails will come back to looking normal.
One day, maybe someone will present to my office with the same "after" results that are often pictured on podiatry websites, but I just have not...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) - PART 1B |
From: David Zuckerman, DPM
I appreciate Dr. Jacobs pointing out that lasers shouldn’t be used for the treatment of mycotic toenails where there is PVD and lack of sensation. I have taught hundreds of doctors over the past 15 years and always pointed out that a detailed physical and history need to do done, as last time I looked, we are well trained podiatric physicians.
There is a role for lasers in the treatment of mycotic toenails. Lasers work by the mechanism of photo-biostimulation with heat playing little to no role in...
