PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Good Foot Care is a Daily Undertaking: MA Podiatry

Podatrist Dr. Lauren A. Perica, of Valley Podiatry Associates, notes good foot care is a daily undertaking. Perica, who did a three-year residency in podiatric medicine and reconstructive forefoot, rearfoot, and ankle surgery at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, recently spoke on the topic at Holyoke Medical Center.

Dr. Lauren Perica

"I would constitute good foot care as washing your feet daily, inspecting them for irritations, keeping nails trimmed, wearing supportive shoes, avoiding flip-flops, pointed shoes, high heels, excessive barefoot walking and when having a problem seek treatment. Often patients come to see me after they have had the problem for several months without seeking any treatment and by this point, the foot is so painful it is causing difficulty walking or performing their job," says Perica.

ACA UPDATE
House Passes AHCA; Now Fate of Obamacare is in the Senate

The House Republicans passed the American Health Care Act (AHCA) with a slim majority on Thursday. The bill gives states the option of returning to a pre-Obamacare individual insurance approach of medical underwriting and high-risk pools. The bill passed by a vote of 217-213 in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday afternoon, one vote over the 216-majority threshold. It is the GOP's first successful attempt to move legislation to repeal President Barack Obama's signature healthcare reform bill, the Affordable Care Act, during the Trump administration after two false starts.

If it passes the Senate, the AHCA will make stark changes to the rules and regulations governing the healthcare industry for the last seven years. A number of Republican senators whose votes are needed for a replacement bill have said that the House version will not survive in their chamber.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Healthcare Fraud 101: Under False Claims Act - Part 6

6. An internal investigation assists your counsel in developing a defense to the possible FCA case. It will come as no surprise that sometimes a whistleblower or the government has the facts wrong, or has interpreted the facts in a questionable manner. Using the information learned during the investigation, your counsel can work to craft an argument to persuade the government that there is no wrongdoing.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: MIPS Without an EHR

I plan to retire in less than four years. My solo practice does not have electronic health records. Is there any way that I can report MIPS for 2017? We do send our claims to Medicare with an electronic computer clearinghouse.

PM News Subscriber

Response: There are three MIPS categories for 2017 - Quality, Advancing Care Information (ACI), and Clinical Practice Improvement Activities (CPIA). Only ACI requires an EHR.

You can fully participate and report on the Quality and CPIA categories without an EHR. Scoring perfectly in those two categories without doing anything for ACI will result in a MIPS score of 75, which is expected to result in a bonus of over 4%.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Gary Dorfman, DPM Retires After 50 Years
From: Peter J. Bregman, DPM

Dr. Gary Dorfman has officially retired from 50 plus years of podiatry. Dr. Dorfman is a former president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He has given much of his time and talent working in various aspects of podiatry and has helped thousands of patients and left his impression on his fellow colleagues.

Dr. Gary Dorfman

His most recent employment was at the Foot, Ankle, and Hand Center of Las Vegas. He finished his last four years of practice doing what he loves and creating bonds with his patients and colleagues that will last forever. Though he is leaving our profession, he will be fondly remembered for his contributions and we wish him well in his retirement.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Kudos to Chris Bryant, DPM
From: Craig Nilsen

During a recent sales trip to Kentucky (KY), one of my sales associates went for a jog in the morning and rolled his ankle during the jog. We went to KY to work a booth at the KPMA conference for Henry Schein. As he was hobbling around the exhibit hall Chris Bryant, DPM came into our booth and asked if he could have a look at my associate's foot. Upon removing his shoe, you could see his ankle was very swollen.

At that point, Dr. Bryan personally drove my associate to his office which was just a couple of miles away and gave him physical therapy, applied a compression bandage, put him in a CAM walker, and then brought him back to the meeting. Dr. Bryant really went above and beyond anyone's expectations. Thanks again, Dr. Bryant.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A
From: David G. Armstrong, DPM

I think that ultimately people are judged not by the size of their bank account or by their lifetime case volume. They're not judged by the number of papers they've written or the number of lectures they've given. Rather, they're judged by their progeny-- both actual and professional. In the history of our specialty, there is no one who has made a greater impact on more young men and women one-on-one than this man. I know he's really not retiring, but moving on to yet another chapter. I, for one, can't wait to read what's next. Bravo, Maestro.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B
From: Khurram H. Khan, DPM

I can honestly say no one has had a more everlasting effect on my career as a podiatric physician or as an educator than Dr. Lawrence Harkless. As his former chief resident (during the days of pyramid residency), I was pushed every day by the entire faculty at UTHSC to be excellent in everything I do. Dr. Harkless and his team never relented on their teaching us to be the best. Every Tuesday/Wednesday/Saturday conference at 6 am was an opportunity to be better. We were taught to think critically and question every decision and provide proof for our answer via quoting articles and reading the most up-to-date evidence-based medicine.

To this day, I still carry these lessons with me as a clinician and as an educator myself. Despite the pure exhaustion from working in that University environment, despite the ups and downs of...
