PODIATRIC STUDENTS IN SPORTS
UTRGV-SOPM Student Receives Jody Ramsey Memorial Award

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Saturday that senior baseball student-athlete Hank Warren is the recipient of the 2026 Jody Ramsey Memorial Award, the top honor a baseball student-athlete can earn at UTRGV.

Hank Warren

Warren has been the starting right fielder for the last three years and upon graduation will begin attending the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine. For Warren, the path to podiatry didn't begin in a classroom, it started at home. Growing up in a family immersed in medicine, Warren witnessed firsthand the impact podiatry could have on people's lives. His father worked as a podiatrist, and those early experiences planted the seeds for what would eventually become his future career. It was a deeply personal family experience that ultimately shaped his motivation.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist is Advocate of Going Barefoot at Home

“I’m a big advocate for going barefoot at home,” Robert Conenello, DPM said. “[The practice] increases intrinsic muscular strength within the feet.” He explained that the primary benefit of walking barefoot is the reinforcement of the muscles in the feet, which tend to weaken “as we age and wear shoes.” These muscles are closely linked to our overall mobility, so their deterioration can contribute to reduced movement as we get older.

Dr. Robert Conenello

“Many of the pathologies that I see in my practice are due to the inability to engage these muscles for normal movements and metabolic efficiency,” Dr. Conenello added. While Conenello acknowledges some risks — such as stepping on pathogens like fungi in moist environments — he is quick to emphasize that “proper hygiene can help mitigate these risks.” “Wash your feet frequently, dry them thoroughly and moisturize,” he advised.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Poor Shoes Can Cause Problems in Feet, Knees, and Back: OH Podiatrist

Did you know your shoes could be the source of your back and knee pain? Joy Rowland, DPM, a podiatrist with the Cleveland Clinic, says patients are often surprised that their shoes could be contributing to pain in other parts of their body. Poor footwear can also cause bunions, ingrown toenails, and flat feet, among many other issues.

Dr. Joy Rowland

Dr. Rowland recommends buying shoes that have a breathable material, a firm heel, and good arch support, which can, in turn, improve your alignment and posture. “Always get measured for a shoe,” Rowland says. “Your foot changes structure, and it changes size over time. So just because you wore an eight and a half three years ago doesn’t mean you’re still in an eight and a half today. So always make sure you get measured towards the end of the day when your feet are a little bit more swollen.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
8 red flags that signal your billing is leaving money on the table

From clean claim rates to contract negotiations, these warning signs could mean your practice is leaving thousands in revenue uncollected.

6. You have not renegotiated payer contracts in more than three years

Payer fee schedules do not automatically adjust for inflation or rising practice costs.

A contract signed three years ago may now pay below your actual cost of care for certain services. Pull your top payers by volume and compare their rates to current Medicare fee schedule benchmarks. If a payer is consistently below 100% of Medicare for your highest-volume codes, it is time to request a renegotiation or evaluate whether termination makes sense.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
What Are Your Chances of an IRS Audit? 15 Audit Red Flags

These red flags could increase your chances of the IRS selecting your return for audit.

7A. Running a business

Schedule C is a treasure trove of tax deductions for self-employed people. But it's also a gold mine for IRS agents, who know from experience that self-employed people sometimes claim excessive deductions and don't report all their income. The IRS looks at both higher-grossing sole proprietorships and smaller ones.

Sole proprietors reporting at least $100,000 of gross receipts on Schedule C and cash-intensive businesses (taxis, car washes, bars, hair salons, restaurants and the like) have a higher audit risk. Ditto for business owners who report substantial losses on Schedule C, especially if those losses can offset in whole or in part other income reported on the return, such as wages or investment income. Also, claiming large business deductions can raise eyebrows at the IRS, as well as claiming losses or deductions incurred between related parties.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: From: Kim Gauntt, DPM, Stanley J. Zawada, DPM

The solution to the theft is to not leave the instruments in the room.

After instruments are cleaned we use trays that you can order from a dental supply company. The instruments are brought in for each patient as needed. We don’t do it for theft prevention; we do it so each patient sees a fresh tray brought in each time. I am not sure why you leave them in the room to begin with.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) -PART 1A
From: David Secord, DPM

I thought that the comment upon the use of the term allopathic here was entertaining. I have commented in this listserv about 10 times about the meaning of the term allopathy and had a submission to Podiatry Today published some years back on the topic. This is an excerpt:

As long as I’m on a roll here, I thought I’d also comment on people in our profession referring to MD and DO medicine as allopathic and osteopathic and then putting ‘podiatric medicine’ in a separate category, as if podiatric medicine wasn’t allopathic medicine. There are a certain finite number of medical theories out there, including allopathic, osteopathic, homeopathic, chiropractic, native American Indian pan-theistic naturopathy, witch doctors, Eastern Indian Ayurvedic medicine and...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) -PART 1B
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

This article was written almost three years ago and published in Nov/Dec 2023, but based on the feedback just revived, it must have been recently re-posted. I searched both my manuscript and the edited published copy and don't see where I specifically defined podiatry under allopathic. Having said that, Dr. Teitelbaum, brings up an interesting question. Is podiatry allopathic or something else? I am not sure this article ever took a position on this.

Searching the web for a uniform definition of allopathic medicine, I used an AI tool which from the Univ. of Kansas describes allopathy as follows: Allopathic medicine, or "conventional medicine," is a modern, evidence-based system where healthcare professionals (doctors/MDs) treat diseases and symptoms using drugs, surgery, and radiation. It focuses on...
