IA Podiatrist Discusses How to Avoid Ozempic Feet
Not everyone taking a GLP-1 will have Ozempic feet. It depends on how quickly and how much weight you lose, and the amount of collagen and elastin in your skin. Muscle and fat loss can also lead to weakness and reduced cushioning that can cause issues like irritation, corns, or even ulcers on the feet, said Kelly John, DPM, MHA, a board-certified podiatric physician and assistant professor at Des Moines University’s College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery.

To reduce discomfort and support overall body health during weight loss treatment, staying hydrated, prioritizing protein intake, and adding strength training to your routine could help reduce muscle loss and prevent changes to your feet, said Dr. John. However, she added, there isn’t any published data on soft tissue loss in the feet from weight loss medications, and more research is necessary. Significant soft tissue loss can change your foot size, so it’s essential to get your shoe size checked after weight loss, said John. A podiatrist should also check for nerve damage, especially if you are using Ozempic or other GLP-1s to manage diabetes.

The simple answer. Don’t waste your time unless you have a predominately Medicare practice. The staff time and money wasted to send data to big brother is not worth the 4% they take from the Medicare payments. It started out as Meaningless…oops, Meaningful Use and all it has become is a way to reduce our compensation unless we learn the jump through the hoops they create and change.

Dr. Grillo, I definitely feel your pain. MIPS is terrible and does nothing to enhance patient care. Here is my opinion on a few things: (1) MIPS is part of MACRA (the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act) and in 2015, it OVERWHELMINGLY passed in Congress: 92-8 in the Senate; 392-37 in the House. So, it passed with tremendous bipartisan support. (2) APMA did everything it possibly could to prevent its passage, as did almost every other medical society. But it goes without saying, Congress sometimes does things that makes us scratch our heads. APMA continues to push for repeal of this program. I personally contact my congressional delegation each chance I can to tell them how bad it is (you can too by contacting your senators and representatives through their offices).
As far as MIPS goes, the APMA does a TREMENDOUS job educating members about the program, and how to mitigate its effect on...

The CPT code for ankle arthroscopy with microfracture is CPT 29891. This code is for "Arthroscopy, ankle, surgical, excision of osteochondral defect of talus and/or tibia, including drilling of the defect". While microfracture is not explicitly mentioned in the code descriptor, it is included as a part of the surgical procedure described in GenHealth.ai.

Thank you, Dr. Mann, for citing this study, which associates an increase in mortality in patients, especially elderly patients, with Vit B12 levels above 400. Thank you, Dr. Jacobs, for pointing out that there is a difference between "association" and "causality." Be that as it may, this paper, cited by Dr. Mann, was a meta-analysis and there are plenty of papers that cite the same association.
In my early days of practice, when we used to treat neuromas with vitamin B12 injections, I recall monitoring their vitamin B12 levels. Patients with serum levels over 800 caused by the injections did not seem to be dying from the treatments. In light of this study cited by Dr. Mann and the wealth of other studies, should we be monitoring our patients who are taking supplements containing vitamin B12? This is in light of the fact that many insurance companies strictly limit the number of times a patient's serum can be monitored for vitamin B12, and if a patient gets a large bill from the lab, he or she will not be a happy camper.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Jack Rice from Connecticut. During my time as a delegate and on the Board of Trustees of the APMA, it was always a pleasure to see Jack and interact with him. He was an natural optimist and of course a great advocate for our profession and the APMA. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wonderful son Andrew and the rest of his family, rest in peace, my dear friend.
