PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS

CA Podiatrist Volunteers on Medical Mission to Nepal

Healing the Children Southern California has been visiting Nepal for over a decade, providing surgical intervention for children and adults with various foot and ankle deformities and conditions that are not able to pay for their medical care. Alireza Khosroabadi, DPM joined the team in 2015, and he has been an integral part of the team ever since.

Dr. Alireza Khosroabadi in Nepal

During the most recent mission trip to Nepal, the team screened 104 patients, mostly children, and some adults, on the first day of the camp. Dr. Khosroabadi performed 22 surgeries over four days, including neglected clubfoot, vertical talus, met adductus, chronic deformities of the foot and ankle, snake bite injuries, and more. The patients traveled from various distances, including the mountainous part of Kathmandu, to see the Healing the Children team.

PODIATRIC PODCASTS
Why the AAPSM Mentor Program Is Meaningful

The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) Young Members Mentor Program has fostered new relationships for podiatry students interested in sports medicine. Aaron Rathsam, DPM, who is a first year resident in Pittsburgh, sat down with his mentor Ben Pearl, DPM to talk about what the program has meant to him.

Click on photo to view short video

Dr. Rathsam felt that learning to set up a research proposal and the value of reaching out to do volunteer work and speaking in the community were two things that resonated from the mentor program experience. Rathsam attended one of Pearl’s Biomechanics Summits and intends to attend again in the future. Pearl added that Aaron’s outreach attitude is critical for podiatry to remain relevant in sports medicine.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1
RE: The Passing of Peter George Poulos, DPM

Dr. Peter Poulos, the third-generation owner of the fabled North Side confectionery and ice cream shop Margie's Candies, died of cancer April 26 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. He was 86. Dr. Poulos became a podiatrist after graduating from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Peter Poulos

He moved his podiatry practice to an office across the street from Margie’s and for several years juggled operating his medical practice and running Margie’s. After seeing patients, he’d leave his office, always in black pants, a shirt and tie, and a Mickey Mouse watch on his wrist, and head to work at Margie’s.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Destruction of X-Rays and MRI CDs

The company that we have used for many years to shred our old paper records will not shred/destroy the 100s of x-ray and MRI CDs that we have collected over the years. It's not realistic for us to use our office paper shredder. Any ideas are appreciated.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: National Practice Act for Podiatry
From: William A. Wood, DPM, MPH

As the DPM/MD discussion goes on without consensus or resolution, I would like to point out the most basic foundational issue of all. Without solving this problem, no solution is available.

Podiatry is an allopathic profession. Osteopathic physicians enjoy the same license as their allopathic brothers and sisters, because what they each share in common is a basic national practice act (with occasional state law amendments). Podiatry cannot move toward parity in the existing environment until a national practice act defines the profession. It is a waste of time and effort until we study the mechanisms that allopathic and osteopathic medicine utilized to secure their national practice acts and follow suit.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

I have made it no secret that while there is an obligation to respond to the requests, there is no requirement to submit charts at no charge. Here are some things you need to do:

1) Get rid of the dinosaur fax machine. There are methods by which to receive faxes directly to your computer. So no ink, no paper. You can do an Internet search to find a myriad of companies which charge a minimal amount based on the number of pages. (e.g. $10 for 100 pages incoming and outgoing). Let Ciox send as much as they want. Depending on the service you choose, you may also be able to block incoming faxes based on the phone...

Editor's note: Dr. Kesselman's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 2
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM

I recently read on PM News that a "training course" is now required by DEA for prescribers to get registered or renew. I wonder if one of you can respond about this "training" who has experienced it. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I assume that most of it is delegated to describing the "craftiness" of addicts' attempts to get prescribers to get them what they want. The rest of the experience is most likely used to demonize prescribers and make them feel "responsible" for the epidemic of drug abuse. But I could be wrong. What I would rather suggest more appropriate is for DEA to explain why they do not make more of an effort to prevent illegal drugs from the Southern borders entering the US.

Also, I would like DEA to make an effort to control drug access to the very large cadre of homeless populations in various US cities. DEA turns a blind eye to this. It is much easier to demonize prescribers. I don't want to make this a political discussion, because addictive drugs do not just affect one political group.

But I have a feeling that if a prescriber makes a public comment like this, they can "expect" the DEA to come down on them. So, if you prefer not to respond, I don't blame you. They can try to retract my DEA registration, but I have the freedom to write because I have none. There are some advantages to retirement. Free speech may be one of them.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ABPM NEWS)
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

Like Dr. Udell, I thought Dr. Spinner was off base for referring to a colleague as a “cancer”. There is simply no place for this type of talk whether within the profession or outside of.

I practice in New York where the law allows all licensed podiatrists to work on any part of the foot irrespective of your board certification. If, however, you want to practice above the ankle, you MUST be board certified by the ABFAS. So, if one wants to write a prescription for a rash on the leg or place a Band-Aid on a boo-boo above the ankle – this can only be done if you are board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, even though none of the above are surgically related. Now, how does that make sense? Did the APMA and ABFAS write letters opposing this legislation?

I believe Dr. Rogers' intent to do what he’s doing is to fight against injustices like what many New York podiatrists are going through, and like what happened in Oregon. The notion that a board certified ABFAS podiatrist is superior to a non-boarded ABFAS podiatrist is ridiculous. I refer plenty of cases to colleagues, I never once asked them what they were boarded in, because it doesn’t matter; they are either capable or not. Board certification does not protect the public; it is nothing more than a money grab.
