PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS |
ID Podiatrist Runs for Congress
Peter Rickards, DPM had all but given up on Idaho. The longtime anti-nuclear activist and repeat candidate for statewide office was tired of not getting through to voters. And after a publicized arrest for growing marijuana, his political aspirations felt more distant than ever. Then, while watching Republican politicians debate Obamacare alternatives on TV one night, the retired podiatrist changed his mind.

Now he’s turning his attention once again to Congress, running as a Democrat for the District 2 seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson, a Republican. He’ll face Aaron Swisher, an economist from Boise in the Democratic primary on May 15. Dr. Rickards said he decided to run as a Democrat this time around because he leans more to the left than to the right on social issues. But he considers himself a fiscal conservative.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2 |
CA Podiatrist Disagrees With Boy Scouts Name Change
The Boy Scouts of America announced plans on Wednesday to change the name of its signature program for older youth, Boy Scouts, to the gender-neutral Scouts BSA. To some, this is all long overdue, the century-old Scouts catching up with changes in society. But there remain doubters.
|
Dr. Noah Blumofe |
Dr. Noah Blumofe, a West L.A. podiatrist who founded a Girl Scout troop and also has a son in Boy Scouts, said he disapproved of the Boy Scouts' decision to accept girls. "Our society is making it so that boys can no longer be boys," he said. "While Girl Scouts don't accept boys, Boy Scouts are now accepting girls. It's somewhat hypocritical."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
Flip-Flops Lack Necessary Support for Long-time Use: NY Podiatrist
Those rubber flip-flops you picked up for cheap are fine for the beach, but you won’t want to wear them all day. They have virtually no arch support, which means your feet will start to turn toward the middle of your body instead of staying straight. When that happens, you’re more likely to sprain your ankle, says Eunice Ramsey-Parker, DPM, MPH, associate professor of podiatric medicine and clinic administrator of the Foot Center of New York. “They won’t trip over anything, but because they don’t have support, they twist their ankle in or out,” she says.
|
Dr. Eunice Ramsey-Parker |
Without the right support, your plantar fascia, the band of tissue in the arch of your foot, will start to pull. That pulling inflames the tissue, making your arch red and painful from a condition called plantar fasciitis. “When you try to step down on your foot, you have excruciating pain in the arch,” says Dr. Ramsey-Parker.

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
Stem Cells Show Long-term Success in Treating Severe PAD
A long-term study of patients who received stem cells to treat angiitis-induced critical limb ischemia (AICLI) shows the cells to be both safe and effective. The study, published in Stem Cells Translational Medicine (SCTM), could lead to an option for those who suffer from this serious form of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). AICLI is caused by an inflammation of the blood vessels that leads to a severe blockage in the arteries of the lower or upper extremities. It causes severe pain and impaired mobility, and can even lead to amputation and death. While endovascular and surgical reconstruction are the mainstream treatments for critical limb ischemia (CLI), these classical treatments are unfeasible in approximately 15 to 20 percent of patients.
Stem cell therapy is a promising option for these otherwise no-option CLI patients. As one of the promising stem cell therapies, purified CD34+ cell transplantation (PuCeT) has shown favorable short-term results, but prior to this new study, no one had looked at its long-term outcome.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Common Reasons Your Claims are Bouncing Back - Part 3
Billing is a complex and often tedious procedure—especially with ICD-10 codes. However, the reasons for returned and delayed claims often boil down to a few basics. Here are some of the most common billing mistakes practices make, and how to make sure your practice avoids them.
3. Please Ask First
Another incredibly easy—but costly—mistake is not getting prior authorization. “Before you preform procedures, make sure you verify whether or not a prior authorization is required,” says Olson. “If it is, send in the request before scheduling the procedure.” And when you get ready to bill the procedure, “make sure the authorization number is on the claim,” she adds. Prior authorizations can be a pain, but having a routine for them when they are necessary can save time and prevent payment delays.

Query: Technical Support for an Alara CR T220 Digital X-ray Reader
Does anyone know who can give me technical support for an Alara CR T220 digital x-ray reader and more specifically the CRystalview software that it uses? It seems Alara is no longer in business nor is the imaging company that sold the system to me.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: Absurd Repeat Fingerprinting Requirement
From: George Jacobson, DPM
I got fingerprinted five years ago as a requirement for Medicaid participation. I don't know if this is just in Florida or a federal requirement. We have a renewal application and were told I have to get fingerprinted again. Did my fingerprints change? This is an absurd waste of my time. There aren't many places that do this that can directly send the fingerprints electronically. I think I spent around $150 last time. I hate stupid government requirements like this. Do government employees, congressmen, senators, and their staffs have to get fingerprinted every five years? I doubt it. When they start fingerprinting lawyers every five years perhaps it won't bother me as much.
George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) PART 2 |
From: Jack A. Reingold, DPM
I disagree that decreasing undergraduate education would somehow increase the applicant pools at podiatry schools. Even if this was correct, it would be a bad idea for other reasons. In California, we have been working on the idea of “parity” between DPMs and MDs. In other words, we take a separate pathway to achieve the same goal, a competent physician. After many years of having an independent board take a look at the curriculum of our schools and our residencies, we are almost there!
The presidents of the California Medical Association and Osteopathic Medical Association have, on several occasions, addressed our state delegates at our annual meeting and have told us that they consider us to be...
