WesternU CPM Founding Dean to Retire
Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine Founding Dean Lawrence B. Harkless, DPM will retire on June 30, 2017. “We have been fortunate to have Larry Harkless at our University as a leader, a mentor, a colleague, and most of all a teacher to the hundreds of students who became podiatrists on his watch,” said WesternU President Daniel R. Wilson, MD, PhD.

|
Dr Lawrence Harkless |
Over the course of his career, Harkless has trained more than 1,000 students and nearly 200 residents, and operated his own private practice, The Alamo Foot Clinic Inc. He is the recipient of multiple state and national awards for podiatric research and care, and co-authored the book Foot and Ankle Secrets, which is a staple among podiatric residents and students. CPM Executive Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Lester J. Jones, DPM, MS, will serve as Interim Dean while the University conducts a search for Harkless’ successor.

ABPM President Testifies On Quality of Care at the VHA
On May 2, 2017, American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) President Steve Goldman, DPM, testified before the VA House Subcommittee on Health about key legislation that would help to address ongoing delays in access to quality care at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The VA Provider Equity Act (HR-1058) would benefit our nation’s veterans through improved, ongoing recruitment and retention of podiatric physicians in the VHA, and would ensure that sufficient experienced podiatric physicians are available to treat patients with lower extremity needs.
|
|
Drs. Steven Goldman and Rep. Brad Wenstrup |
“This bill reflects significant advancement in the education, training, and licensure requirements for podiatric physicians over the past 40 years,” said Dr. Goldman. “Podiatrists deserve parity within the VHA, and our patients deserve the proven benefits of the best-trained experts in lower extremity care as part of their healthcare team.” There is overwhelming support from VA chiefs of staff and chief medical officers for a legislative remedy to include DPMs in the Physician and Dentist Pay Authority. See Dr. Goldman's written testimony. Watch the entire hearing.

DC Podiatrist Discusses Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
From 2006 to 2010, more than one million patients went to the emergency department for diabetes-related foot complications, and 10.5 percent of those involved an amputation, according to a new study published in PLOS One.
|
| Dr. Katherine Respovic |
"If blood sugars are not well-controlled, patients with diabetes can develop numbness in their feet, which is called peripheral neuropathy," says Dr. Katherine Respovic, spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association and a podiatric surgeon at MedStar Georgetown Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital in the District of Columbia. This proves dangerous if, say, you develop a blister or injure your foot, which can lead to infections or amputation.

Flip-Flops Cause You to Curl Your Toes Excessively: DC Podiatrist
Summer sunshine often means sleeveless tops and shorter hemlines, but it also heralds the re-emergence of another seasonal staple: the flip-flop. The strappy sandal — and its distinctive slap on floors or sidewalks — has been a mainstay in American culture for decades, but its ubiquity has been bemoaned by podiatrists and other experts. Many say the flip-flop is a particularly poor option to keep your feet shod during the summer, pointing to common injuries like stress fractures or blisters that plague many wearers during the warmer months.
|
|
Dr. Howard Osterman |
“When you only have something between your toes to keep the shoe on, you have to curl your toes excessively,” podiatrist Dr. Howard Osterman told the Washington Post in 2011. “You have to spend all day firing your muscles to keep the shoe on the foot.”

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Healthcare Fraud 101: Under False Claims Act - Part 5
Once you understand the scope of the investigation from the government's perspective, you need to work with counsel to investigate the conduct in question. This is called an internal investigation and it serves two main purposes.
First, an internal investigation helps you get a handle on what happened and, if necessary, take steps to stop any problematic conduct. It is prudent to err on the side of stopping conduct that the government believes is wrongful, even if the practice has a good reason to continue it.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) | |
From: Donald R Blum, DPM, JD
The requirements are as follows:
(j) "Practice of Medicine" means the clinical prevention, diagnosis,or treatment of human disease, injury, or condition requiring a physician to obtain and maintain a license in compliance with the Medical Practice Act of a member state.(k)"Physician" means any person who: (1) Is a graduate of a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation,or a medical school listed in the International Medical Education Directory or its equivalent;(2) Passed each component of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA).
I hope this clears up any issue about the Medical Interstate Licensing Pact.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY) | |
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM
The fourth "step" is balderdash as well as the first. Your employees and patients will know about the investigation before the defendant. Telltale signs are when employees interviewed who have been with the defendant longer will talk to other employees; It becomes harder to get new patients to keep the appointment; It becomes harder to keep employees; Increased number of patients will start asking for their records.
It may be obstruction of justice to talk to others than investigators of the government, even assuming the defendant knows there is a government level investigation beyond the State's licensing board.
