PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Heel Pain in Lacrosse Players Common: CT Podiatrist

According to podiatrist Dr. Robert F. Weiss, "One of the most common lacrosse injuries we have seen is in relation to heel pain. This problem is often caused by a condition known as apophysitis of the calcaneus (heel bone) or Sever’s disease." In addition to the trauma and stress created by lacrosse and other running sports, there are other contributing factors that result in the inflammation of the growth plate. These include biomechanical foot imbalances of abnormal pronation or a high-arch foot, cleated or improperly fitting shoes, and improper training methods.
Dr. Robert Weiss

"Treatment consists of x-ray evaluation to make a proper diagnosis and to rule out any bone fractures. An orthotic insert is often needed to correct the biomechanical imbalances which may be causing a jamming effect on the heel plate. In addition, eliminate the use of any cleated shoes with less than four cleats in the heel area. In summary, watch for any warning signals; when a child complains of heel pain, there is usually a need for examination," says Weiss.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY STUDENTS IN THE NEWS
Canadian Podiatry Student Collects 300 Pairs of Socks for Homeless

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have always been known as a people to help strangers, and St. Anthony’s Kathryn O’Rielly recently proved it. While studying podiatry at Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences in Toronto, Ontario, she called on the people of her home province to assist her with a project. As of 2013, there were 5,253 homeless people living in the city.

Kathryn O’Rielly

“As students we all live downtown and every morning I walk by at least a dozen people on our way to school,” she said. “It’s not something people see much of but it is something that is very real.” She had been talking about this project with her parents over Christmas break and decided to put out a social media call for sock donations in January. Initially O’Rielly’s goal was 50 pairs. As the posting started circulating, more and more people from the area and different parts of the province wanted to help and she ended up with 300 pairs.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
Cops: NY Podiatrist Plotted to Kill Wife

A podiatrist and his girlfriend plotted to kill his wife and have two insurance investigators looking into his business beaten up, town police said Tuesday. Police arrested Ira Bernstein, 41, and Kelly Myzner Grideluk, 36, Monday night following a month-long investigation they said was sparked when the person allegedly hired to kill Bernstein's wife reported the plot to police. Detective Lt. Mark Emma said Bernstein and Grideluk thought the man they approached was a hired killer.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: CMEs for Narcotic Requirement

Many states now require a certain number of CME credits for narcotic prescription privileges. Does anyone have an affordable online source to share with the rest of us for obtaining these credits?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Marvin Levin, MD
From: Lee J. Sanders, DPM

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of Marvin Levin, MD on April 30th, at the Missouri Baptist Hospital, Saint Louis, Missouri. Marvin was 91 years old. He was a renowned diabetologist who advanced the cause of diabetic foot care and amputation prevention.
Dr. Marvin Levin

He was a friend to podiatry and an important supporter of my career, as well as the careers of other prominent podiatrists in the diabetic foot community. He will be greatly missed. My heartfelt condolences are extended to his wife Barbara.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: David P. Luongo, DPM, Paul Kesselman, DPM

Try Apis footwear in California.

David P. Luongo, DPM, NY, NY

Before answering your question, let me provide some background information to assist you with your query:

A) SADMERC was replaced by CMS many years ago with the Price Data Analysis Contractor (PDAC) which essentially performs the same functions as SADMERC;

B) SADMERC did away with the requirement(s) for product reviews and validation prior to its dissolution and the PDAC has continued that practice. That is, therapeutic shoes do not require a product validation as part of the Therapeutic Shoe for Patients with Diabetes (TSPD) program. However, they must meet the specifications for...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Joseph Borrreggine, DPM

Private practice is not doomed yet. Yes, many can still make it. And yes, an experienced independent podiatric practitioner can make, on average, $500K a year. This is true. I have been in practice for 25 plus years and still staying afloat, but for how much longer I cannot say. Many changes have occurred over the years. Most of these have not been friendly to private practitioners. Outside of EHR, Meaningful Use, and now with MACRA and MIPS, payment models and reimbursements will change to a more performance based and incentive system. This will be a game changer for those remaining in private practice, and financial independence as a physician is certainly in jeopardy.

Whatever changes occur in the future, business adaptation and diversification are the keys to financial success. But, that may not even help in the long run. As more and more physicians become employed, the less...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A
From: Peter C. Smith, DPM

I read, with concern, that the AACPM's latest statistics allow Dr. Sherman to "...conclude that the residency shortage is now over." My concern is that a leading figure in our profession would publically announce that the residency crisis is no longer a crisis.

The latest Residency Placement Statistics must be read in the perspective of the current condition of our profession. We are the single medical profession which is failing to thrive. The residency positions only match the graduating class numbers because the CPME has, arguably appropriately, restricted/capped the...

Editor's note: Dr. Smith's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

Yes, the profession came together and ended 98% of the crisis, thanks to a lot of our great colleagues, but how are we going to prevent the same thing from happening all over again? Hospitals' health, in too many cases, is not all that good, and some host podiatric residencies. While there are nearly enough programs today, there may not be tomorrow. Further, what will stop additional for profit colleges of podiatric medicine from opening, re-creating the crisis the profession just cured?

RE: Misspelling or Subliminal Suggestion?

A patient filled out our medical history form yesterday. Under allergies, he wrote, "Satin's drugs". The devil is a powerful being, but I wasn't aware he had his own line of drugs!
