OR Podiatrist Saves Foot of Hit-and-Run Victim
Thomas Leech said he ventured from his home, braving the cold weather conditions that raged on the evening of March 9, to purchase a half gallon of milk. After purchasing the milk, an oncoming vehicle hit Leech as he was attempting to cross the icy street in front of Holstein’s Coffee, running over his right foot, crushing bone, and causing him to slip and fall to the ground in pain. Emergency response came in the form of two officials from Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, who attended to Leech on-site and prepared him for the journey to Mid-Columbia Medical Center.
|
Dr. Joshua Boone |
The clash with the unknown vehicle, Leech said, had “twisted the ball joint” on his foot, damaging a good number of lower leg bones and leaving behind a wound so deep it exposed a tendon. Leech said his operation was conducted by podiatric surgeon Dr. Joshua Boone of Mid-Columbia Medical Center and that he spent his initial recovery on the fourth floor of the hospital before being moved to Columbia Basin Care Facility. Now that Leech has been at Columbia Basin well over a month, he said he feels as though he has really gotten to know many of the people who have become his constant caregivers, even making a few new friends in the process.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
IL Podiatrist Discusses Why Stilettos Create Sexy Appearance...and Damage to Feet
Thankfully, we’re seeing more flat shoes (especially lace-up Oxfords) in fashion magazines, on blogs, and on the runway. That said, stilettos will remain popular because many people find them sexy. “Your calf muscles are contracted so they get more defined. Stilettos also lengthen the leg,” says podiatrist Dr. Marlene Reid.
|
Dr. Marlene Reid |
In short, yup, they make your legs look sexier than flats, wedges, or kitten heels. “I see women in their 20s wearing them. I tell them just wait till your early 30s. They can cause all kinds of problems, like stress fractures. They’re not good for people. You’re going to wear down the padding at the ball of the foot, and it can never come back.” I see many women walking in stilettos, and they look as if they’re in excruciating pain. And that, my friends, is not sexy.

CA Podiatrist Sues Former Hospital
Simi Valley podiatrist Dr. Lee Rogers, a candidate in this year’s race to represent California’s 25th Congressional District, is suing the hospital that contracted his services, claiming a doctor there bad-mouthed him, according to a copy of the lawsuit obtained by The Signal. Rogers filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court last week against Valley Presbyterian Hospital of Van Nuys. Rogers had been performing outpatient services at the hospital as co-medical director of the Amputation Prevention Center. However, he “terminated his affiliation” with the hospital in November, according to his lawsuit. However, he “terminated his affiliation” with the hospital in November, according to his lawsuit. The lawsuit claims a doctor at the hospital “disparaged Rogers, and Rogers’ performance, on numerous occasions since Nov. 27, 2013.”

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Unidentified Soft Tissue Mass
This patient is a 43 year old woman of middle eastern descent. She initially presented for a complaint of xerosis. Upon evaluation, an elevated soft tissue mass measuring 2.2 cm x 1.2 cm was noted along the plantar aspect of the 4th metatarsal shaft. The patient believes the mass has been present for a long time and denies any recent trauma. Initially, the lesion was not painful but at follow-up, it was. The mass increased to 2.5 cm x 1.4 cm over one month and the patient states that it has become less painful.
|
MRI of soft tissue mass |
The MRI shows a soft tissue mass ill-defined with high signal within the soft tissues at the level of the 4th MTP and extending into the 3rd and 4th interdigital space. Flexor and extensor tendons are intact. The patient is refusing needle aspiration-type biopsy and wants to have an idea what it is before consenting to an open biopsy/ resection. Any thoughts?

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: "Clear" Gentian Violet
I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but do they make a clear gentian violet? I thought I had seen an ad for it in the past.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Maryland Podiatrists to be Allowed to do "Acute" Ankle Fracture Surgery
From: Steven Selby Blanken, DPM
Thanks to the hard work of the MPMA, we won our long battle with a number of the foot and ankle orthopedists, and as of October 1, 2014, we will no longer be restricted from performing "acute" ankle fracture surgery. Thus, any qualified DPM who wishes to pursue ankle surgery, including fracture repairs in the state of Maryland, will be allowed to apply for privileges with their respective hospitals. Interested podiatrists who want more information should contact the MPMA.

RE: Government and the Healthcare System
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM
Recently, in Mississippi, several rural hospitals have been forced to close their doors. The reason that they have had to shut down is complex, but it can be boiled down to a simple concept. They cannot afford to stay open. It costs them more to open the door every day than they take in. These hospitals, with all their rules and regulations, have only been able stay open with money from the system manufactured by our government, and now that is not even enough.
My prediction is that the government will continue to attempt to centralize healthcare, probably starting with rural areas so that they can take complete control not only of the financial aspect of paying doctors and facilities but also ...

RE: The Passing of Marvin L. Kravitz, DPM
From: Arthur E. Helfand, DPM
I want to comment on the late Marvin L. Kravitz of Maryland. We were students at Temple during the same time frame. Marvin was a true gentleman and was one of the most decent individuals in the profession. May his soul rest in peace.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP |
RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day
The hamburger shoe has arrived. What, weren't you waiting for it? A British clothing company called End Clothing worked with Saucony to design this new hamburger-inspired sneaker called the Shadow 5000 Burger. The kicks use the same colors - but not actual ingredients - as burgers.
|
Sole Food? |
The shoe, available Saturday, comes with condiment packets labeled as "mayo" and "BBQ" that contain shoelaces, and everything is packed into a box resembling a takeout container. The sneaker is going for 99 pounds in England - and no, you can't eat it. Oh, that's about $167.
