AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM’s First Alumni Reunion Gala – A Night of Nostalgia

Laughs and memories were shared and old friendships renewed at NYCPM’s First Alumni Reunion Gala. The trip down memory lane, hosted in conjunction with the SuperBones SuperWounds East Conference at the Teaneck Marriott Glenpointe, drew alumni from the classes of 1981, 1986, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011. Recollections and affections came flooding back as former classmates enjoyed cocktails, dinner, and dancing. The hilarity ensued as revelers donned costumes and props while the photo booth immortalized the extraordinary event.
(L-R) Drs. Michael Trepal ('81), Robert Eckles, Niral Patel ('12), Mr. Karl Martensen, and Dr. Giannin Perez

All too soon, laughter and merriment turned to wistfulness and sentiment as attendees hugged with promises of future reconnections. “This gala was such a success that it will be just the first of NYCPM alumni galas to come,” said Lisa K. Lee, Dean, Student Services and Enrollment Management.

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
VA Podiatrist Says Farewll to His Grill

I never understood the Virginia Beach doctor’s attachment to his dilapidated grill. Rust had gnawed a gaping hole through one side of the base. He kept right on grilling by using a rock to suspend what was left of the disintegrating grate above the coals. The grill looked curb-ready that day last year when I interviewed Dr. Joseph Smith, a podiatrist, surfer, snowboarder, Army veteran, thrash metal band aficionado, father of five, and serial griller who in 2014 manned the flames 100 times, in the snow, in the rain, in the heat, and in the cold. He’s the kind of guy who stockpiles charcoal like some people stockpile wood.

Dr. Joseph Smith and his former grill

Surely, the doctor could afford a new grill, I thought. Instead, Smith kept patching things together for another year and a half, turning out steaks, burgers, dry-rubbed roasts, brats, and more until last week when he finally gave in and pushed the old girl to the street. “I played taps on the outdoor speakers as I rolled it to the curb,” he said in a dispatch. “Then I gave it a military salute. RIP soldier. You served us well.”

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
Canadian Podiatrist Accused of Using 'Knock-off' Implants

A controversial foot doctor is now facing accusations about the use of questionable implants on patients without their knowledge. Our investigation has now found that Dr. Pierre Dupont's patients paid him thousands of dollars for a procedure that uses a Health Canada approved HyProCure stent, but may have instead received fake implants.

The inventor of the HyProCure stent, Dr. Michael Graham, told Go Public he was contacted by several of Dupont's patients and former colleagues who told him they suspected the Ottawa foot doctor was selling HyProCure to some patients, but giving them his own 'knock-off' implants instead. "I was absolutely floored ... I had no idea he was making these knock-offs," says the founder of U.S.-based GraMedica.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Bret Ribotsky: What is the biggest crisis facing podiatry today and how can we solve it?

Dr. Barry Block

Barry Block: The decrease in the number of qualified applicants threatens the future of the profession on many levels. If we ever expect to achieve true parity with other allopathic physicians, we need to enroll the highest calibre students possible. The greater the number of applicants, the more selective our colleges can be. To resolve this crisis, we need every podiatrist to become a recruiter. We simply cannot depend on the limited resources of the colleges or podiatric organizations to fix this problem. Podiatrists need to encourage their friends and patients to have their college age students look into podiatry as a career.

Dr. R. Daniel Davis

Meet the Masters airs live every Tuesday night. This week's guest is APMA President R. Daniel Davis, DPM. You can register for future events by clicking here.

New Medicare Penalty Hits Small Groups, Solo Physicians Hardest

Medicare's new compensation formula will bestow performance bonuses as high as 4% on an estimated 412,000 physicians and other clinicians in 2019 and impose corresponding penalties on another 346,000, mostly in practices of from one to 24 members, according to proposed regulations recently released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

One physician organization is expressing dismay about a payment system that seems to work against smaller practices. "It's extremely concerning," said Anders Gilberg, senior vice president of government affairs for the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), in an interview with Medscape Medical News. "Any program like this should give physicians the opportunity to succeed regardless of practice size. "Why wouldn't you structure it so it will lift all boats?"

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Source for Size 18E SADMERC-Approved Shoes

I am writing to request assistance from the readers of PM News to help me find a source of SADMERC-approved, extra-depth inlay shoes for a patient measuring a size 18E. Most of the diabetic shoe suppliers I have contacted do not carry shoes larger than size 14.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Robert Baldauf, DPM
From: Mark K. Johnson, DPM

I was saddened to learn of Bob's passing. I became friends with Dr. Baldauf from 1984-1986 while we did the Kern Hospital Residency. Bob was bright, motivated, compassionate, humble, and very skilled at surgery and biomechanics. Regretfully, I lost contact with him through the years. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. He will NOT be forgotten. Rest in peace, my friend.
