AT THE COLLEGES
TUSPM  Podiatrist Has Treated Runners for Three Decades

The Blue Cross Broad Street Run (BCBSR) is one of the nation's biggest road races and among Philadelphia's most beloved annual events. Temple faculty members have been part of the BCBSR experience for many years, both as clinicians and as scholars who've studied the benefits of the race and running.

Dr. Howard Palamarchuk (photo: Kimberly Paynter)

No one knows more about the foot and ankle injuries that BCBSR runners suffer - and how to avoid them - than Dr. Howard Palamarchuk, director of sport medicine at Temple's School of Podiatric Medicine. For three decades, Palamarchuk and a team of Temple podiatry students have treated BCBSR runners who come to the medical tent near the finish line with foot or ankle complaints. The most common injuries? Blisters, said Palamarchuk, followed by nail problems, soft-tissue injuries (such as fasciitis and arch strain), and stress fractures.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
LA Podiatrist Discusses Flatfoot Deformity

According to podiatrist Tyson Green, DPM, "Flatfoot deformity can be the result of a number of other foot-related issues such as improper footgear, biomechanical problems, compensation for abnormalities of the foot, rupture of tendon/ligament, and most commonly, a tight Achilles tendon. Treatment of flat foot deformity depends on the presence of pain. If no pain is present, then treatment may not be required at all, other than wearing proper footgear."
Dr. Tyson Green

"Treatment for painful flatfeet can vary from taping the foot for additional support, custom molded orthotics, stretching, and range of motion exercises, or, in severe cases, surgical intervention," says Dr. Green.

HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION
GOP Budget Would Repeal ACA but is Largely a Political Statement

Congressional Republicans are crowing that the budget blueprint the House and Senate agreed to Thursday night proves they are governing effectively and pursuing fiscal responsibility by cutting spending by more than $5 trillion over a decade and repealing the Affordable Care Act.

But any attempt to repeal the healthcare reform law is certain to be vetoed, and Republicans lack large enough majorities in the House and Senate for an override. That means their ACA repeal will largely be a political statement, teeing up healthcare reform as a 2016 election issue.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
4 Ways to Handle Cyber Conflict and Negative Reviews

Electronic remarks can be hurtful, to both your pride and your practice. Here are four ways to handle negative electronic interactions and potentially detrimental online reviews.

1. Ignore negative comments.

Though difficult to do, it may be best to simply not read what other people are writing about you. Once you get over the initial shock of being slammed by negativity, you'll likely see that there's little to be gained by reading further. Though it's wise to keep apprised of what's being posted, that doesn't mean you need to be the one who's doing the reading. Consider assigning the task to a member of your staff, asking them to notify you if they think there's something you need to address personally.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Sneaker with Velcro Heel Closure

Is anyone familiar with a sneaker or shoe that has a Velcro closure at the posterior aspect of the heel counter? I have seen one on a patient in the past, but do not recall the brand. If so, what is the brand and model?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1
From: Gene Mirkin, DPM, Alan Sherman, DPM

Hats off for creating the premier exchange of information for all podiatrists! We are all better off because of you and PM News!

Gene Mirkin, DPM, Kensington, MD

Congratulations on reaching yet another milestone, Barry. It’s a rare day when I don’t read PM News and enjoy the additional connectedness it provides for me to the field that I love and work for.  The service that you provide is invaluable, cannot be done by any computer programing or artificial intelligence yet devised, and continues to improve. Thanks for your years of focus and hard work bringing PM News to us.

Alan Sherman, DPM, CEO, PRESENT e-Learning Systems

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B
From: Hugh Sheridan, Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM

Congratulations on hitting the 17,000 mark – that is a huge achievement. PM News really is the only global news resource for the entire podiatric profession.

Hugh Sheridan, CEO, ALG International,  Liverpool, UK

The power of communication is the most important aspect of what we do. Congratulations to PM News! This resource helps communication with the people who compose the profession. Good or bad news are both important. We have often heard that in order to avoid the problems of the future, we must study the problems of the past. We can bring this same philosophy to surgical problems as the business aspects of what we do by reading PM News.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: David Zuckerman, DPM

While there are disappointing reasons ESWT lost coverage through national insurance, what is most important is being able to offer high energy ESWT to our patients. It is a terrific treatment that has stood the test of time and scrutiny of double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled, multi-center studies. Excellence Shockwave Therapy has been using the Dornier Epos Ultra since its FDA approval in 2002. The Dornier Epos Ultra is the only FDA-approved class-three device with ultrasound-guided imaging. The Dornier is the only device that passes the National Blue Shield Tech Report with flying colors.

When evaluating coverage policies for ESWT, Blue Cross/Blue Shield lumped all ESWT devices...

Disclosure: I have no financial relationship with Dornier.

Editor's note: Dr. Zuckerman's extended-length letter can be read here.
