Simple Test to Check if Your Body is Dehydrated: CA Podiatrist

Foot and ankle surgery specialist  Dana Brems, DPM uses her TikTok video to talk about the ‘Skin Turgos’ test, which is used to find out how hydrated you are. To do it, just pull your fingertip or the skin over your knuckles to see if it returns to its original form or stays in the same position.

Dr. Dana Brems

If the skin flattens immediately, it means your body is hydrated, if it doesn’t – you’re probably dehydrated, says Dr. Brems.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
CA Podiatrist Opines on How Long House Shoes and Slippers Last

As with all things, there is an expiration date for house shoes and slippers. They don't last forever. "But depending on the material that the slipper is made from and the amount of wear and tear from simple home activities, they can last years," says Wenjay Sung, DPM, podiatrist at USC Arcadia Hospital in Arcadia, CA. "If a house slipper is made of rubber or a latex-type material, I usually say two to three years because the amount of activity at home is generally not too abrasive to the slipper and the durable material will help it sustain normal wear and tear from home activities," says Dr. Sung.

Dr. Wenjay Sung

If the house slipper is made of a cloth-type material, Dr. Sung says it's best to replace them every six months to a year. "The rationale for replacing cloth-type slippers more frequently is that build-up of bacteria and fungus from sweat, dirt, or a combination thereof can deteriorate cloth-type slippers more rapidly with normal wear and tear," says Sung. Some European and Australian brands are made of foam composites that have microbial-resistant properties. As a result, these house shoes and slippers are quite durable and can last for several years.

INERNATIONAL PODIATRY AND SPORTS MEDICINE
UK Podiatry Students Volunteer at TCS London Marathon 2024

Each year, some 60 podiatrists, both qualified and pre-registration students from all over the UK, descend on the capital to volunteer for the TCS London Marathon. This year, the first cohort of AECC University College MSc Podiatry (pre-registration) students, along with Associate Professor in Podiatry and Course Leader, Simon Otter, joined peers from the Universities of Brighton, Northampton, and East London.

Podiatrists and podiatry students at London Marathon

The co-location developed a true multidisciplinary ethos and close working relationships with physiotherapists, nurses, paramedics, physicians, and the voluntary sector as part of the wider finish-line medical team. Students gained valuable experience by providing care for a different client group in a highly unfamiliar “medical setting”. They provided care for runners who presented with a wide range of complaints, including blisters, wounds, sprains, fractures, and hypothermia, and for those who had collapsed from sheer exhaustion.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
10 Suggestions to be an On-time Physician

Many of these ideas can easily be implemented in any office, with minimal or no expenses and without adding additional staff.

9. Allow for emergencies and urgencies. Every physician will have one or two patients who call and request a same-day appointment. In the past, I have told these patients to come in, and we will “work them in.” As a result, inserting these emergencies or urgencies will throw off your schedule and make you late for appointments at the end of the morning or at the end of the day. You can alleviate this situation by having time slots that are left open in the mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Howard Bonenberger, DPM

I appreciated the comments by Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM, however to be clear, I was writing specifically about FHL. This is worth learning about. Addressing it effectively will not only help your patients, it can grow your practice because your orthotic solved a problem that someone else's did not.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH

I read Dr. Kesselman’s response. While I understand his thinking, here are my old school thoughts concerning student loans. Any student can easily reduce their loan dependence by working part time during their schooling or on summer breaks. Also decreasing debt is easy; spend less and scrimp during school and residency. Too many students today think nothing of drinking $6 Starbucks whenever they want and living above their means. Maybe you must reduce rent by sharing an apartment.

There are lots of ways to spend less and or supplement your income. There is nothing wrong with a little struggle but today’s students to me seem to be entitled to a certain lifestyle that maybe they can’t afford. What I am trying to say is that where there is a will there is a way. The same goes for wanting to just get a 9 to 5 job. If you want to really excel, try the concierge/ direct pay model, and make as much as you feel you deserve. Yes, it will be difficult at first but in the long run, you are the boss of your future not just an employee happy to get yourself a cost of living increase each year.

RESPONSES COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

In the current debate concerning direct pay for services rendered versus acceptance of insurance and being a provider, two thoughts trouble me greatly from a meta-ethical point of view. I have tried to find a redeeming tone in each of them and have delayed responding to ensure I am not just shooting from the hip. The implications of these two statements are, to say the least, profound especially for our podiatric students and younger more impressionable readers.

Dr. Roth, who was among the the first podiatrists to switch to a fee-for-service medical reimbursement system claims that it works for him because he provides the best care possible to his pay for service patients. In order to be successful, he must provide...
