AT THE COLLEGES |
New Agreement Signed Between NYCPM and Polish University
In early April, Michael J. Trepal, DPM, New York College of Podiatric Medicine's (NYCPM) Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, and Tomasz Grodzicki, Vice-Rector and Dorota Klys, Deputy Bursar of Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow, Poland, signed a Direct Cultural and Scientific Cooperation Agreement. The agreement "tightens" the scientific cooperation between the two institutions, aiming to develop and maintain cooperation in the fields of podiatry and physical therapy.

(L-R) Dr. Michael Trepal, Louis Levine, Joel Sturm, Drs. Kulesa-Mrowiecka, Eileen Chusid, Fortunato Battaglia, and Ronald Soave |
The cooperation will include an exchange of clerkships in the summer of 2019, in which 2-3 students from each institution will undertake two- to four-weeks of clinical training at the other. The agreement might also include an exchange of faculty; joint research projects; meetings, seminars and courses on subjects to be determined; exchange of information and scientific publications; and development of cooperation between the institutions' libraries.

PODIATRISTS AND WOUND CARE |
NY Podiatrist's Wound Care Center Named Center of Excellence
For the third year in a row, the United Memorial Medical Center (UMMC) Wound Care team earned the Robert A. Warriner III, M.D. Center of Excellence Award by Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. The award recognized UMMC, for their clinical excellence, high healing rate, and high level of patient satisfaction. “It never gets old receiving this award, especially knowing how hard everyone on this team works to provide the best possible wound care in Western New York,” remarked Joseph Canzoneri, DPM, medical director for the Wound Care Center.
|
Dr. Joseph Canzoneri |
Patients joined the award celebration on Monday and shared stories of the life-changing care they received. “I really expected them (my legs) to be amputated when I came in,” explained Lowell Melvin, a patient of the Wound Care Center. “Dr. Joe (Joseph Canzoneri, DPM) made the same promise probably twenty other doctors had made, but the big and different thing was, he kept it. When he said he could heal them, he did!”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
Always Be Learning Says NJ Podiatrist
Just because you're graduating doesn’t mean you have to put your zest for learning on the shelf. “Always be on the lookout for exciting new opportunities. Learning does not stop after graduation,” says Velimir Petkov, DPM, Medical Director at Premier Podiatry in Clifton, NJ.
|
Dr. Velimir Petkov |
Whether it’s attending conferences or taking part-time courses, Dr. Petkov recommends finding ways to continue to learn and develop new skills — not only in the post-grad phase but throughout your career. “Look into adding a professional certificate or two to your resume. There are [certificates] suitable for both newcomers and seasoned professionals in most industries.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
When to Consider Succession Planning - Part 1
You might feel a little uneasy about starting the discussion about selling your medical practice. Your practice is your baby, and the thought of letting go can be overwhelming. However, the truth is that failing to plan is a plan to fail when it comes to your practice exit strategy. Everyone thinks of their future, but they don’t always take active steps in the present to prepare for what they want tomorrow. Here are several reasons why you should start the succession planning conversation today.
1. You have increasing family obligations - Owners can run medical practices and have families but balancing the two can be difficult. If obligations, such as caring for an ill family member, or your children’s educational or extracurricular commitments are taking time away from your practice, you could experience a negative shift in the dynamic of your practice. If you don’t have a team in place that can run the practice without you for a few days, consider bringing in reinforcements.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) |
From: Adam Landsman, DPM, PhD
As soon as I saw Dr. Levy's post, I knew it was just a matter of time until somebody came forward to declare that based on this one study, lasers don't work for treatment of onychomycosis. It only took one day. As doctors, we should look at some facts (not sound bites) before deciding what is best for our patients.
FDA: correct that FDA cleared lasers for cosmetic improvement of nails, however this was not due to the fact that laser can't kill fungus, but rather because, they also deemed that onychomycosis is...
