PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2 |
IL Podiatrist Apologizes for Bullying Incident 60 Years Ago
On a recent Wednesday afternoon, some 60 years after they graduated from grammar school, the Rys sisters sat down and had a meal with a classmate for the first time. Over soup and coffee at a Tinley Park Panera, Kathleen Rys, 72, and her sister Lorraine O’Kelly, 70, made amends with one of their childhood tormentors, Bruce Smit, DPM, 71.
|
Dr. Bruce Smit |
“I don’t know how it all started, but by the time I was in sixth or seventh grade, everyone was avoiding the Rys sisters,” said Dr. Smit, a Frankfort, podiatrist whose wife, Tammy, organized the breakfast forgiveness meeting. As the group openly discussed the memories, wounds and scars that bullying can have on both victim and perpetrator, they pondered the reasons it happened at all.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
SC Podiatrist Gets 15-Year for Oxycodone Trafficking
A former podiatrist was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 13 others were arrested for their roles in an oxycodone trafficking case. Dr. Mackie James Walker, Jr., from Aiken, was convicted of selling illegal prescriptions of the painkiller and was communicating directly with co-conspirators who recruited individuals to see Walker and get a prescription. Walker would make upwards of $1000 per prescription.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Common Reasons Your Claims are Bouncing Back - Part 2
Billing is a complex and often tedious procedure—especially with ICD-10 codes. However, the reasons for returned and delayed claims often boil down to a few basics. Here are some of the most common billing mistakes practices make, and how to make sure your practice avoids them.
2. Something’s Missing Here
Sometimes payers delay payment because you didn’t send enough information. Often you can see this coming. “For example, when you file workers’ compensation claims, you will always need to submit documentation with the claim,” says Tammie Olson of Management Resource Group, an Ocean Springs, MS., a firm offering financial management and support services for the healthcare community. “If you know you need to send the documentation to get a claim paid, do so when you file.”

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Correct Modifer Usage for CPT 28225
When performing a tenolysis on an extensor (multiple extensors) tendon, what is the correct location modifier to use? Indeed, it is a “foot” tendon but the insertion is in the digit. Would the modifier be “RT” or “LT” —or—- T2,T3, etc.?
Howard Dinowitz, DPM, Brooklyn, NY
Response: CPT code 28225 is: Tenolysis, extensor, foot; single tendon
CPT code 28226 is: Tenolysis, extensor, foot; multiple tendons
Whether the described procedure is being performed on one extensor tendon or multiple extensor tendons, the operative word in the descriptions is “FOOT.” The issue is not where the tendon inserts, but rather where the procedure is being performed. Thus, the appropriate modifiers to use for either 28225 or 28226 would be RT or LT.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Arthur J. Bosa, DPM
Dr. Arthur J. Bosa 92, a longtime resident of Keene, passed away suddenly at his home in Keene on Friday, April 27, 2018. Arthur was drafted into the armed services in 1944 and chose to serve in the United States Navy and proudly served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

Dr. Arthur Bosa |
After his honorable discharge in 1946, he attended St. Anselm College for his undergraduate studies and then received his degree in podiatric medicine from the Illinois School of Podiatry. His whole life centered on his love of caring for people. He truly loved his work as a podiatrist and being able to help others.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) |
From: Mark Dreyer, DPM
I have no experience with Hyalgan, but I used Synvisc One in the military population for ankle and 1st MPJ osteoarthritis. It’s a single injection instead of a series. It comes pre-loaded in a 6cc syringe, I use 6cc into the ankle via a 22 gauge needle every 6 months. Use 1cc for hallux rigidus/limitus.
Mark Dreyer, DPM, Newport, RI

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Alison Silhanek, DPM
I agree with Dr. Gudeon. There is a difference between “trained” and “educated”. Let me be clear. I am a big fan of Mike Rowe. Not everyone needs a college education. There are many occupations that are noble and do not need a college education. And we, in the U.S., need to go back to stressing that concept (Heck, my plumber makes more than me!). But when we talk about college education, I am a big believer in liberal arts.
I respect those in our profession who only believe in science majors. But I went to a highly acclaimed liberal arts school that enabled me to major in English, participate as a violinist in its orchestra while still being pre-med. I am better for it. I credit Hamilton College for my education much more before I credit Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. While I love my profession, we should look to enlist young people from all backgrounds to our profession.
Alison Silhanek, DPM, Smithtown, NY
