MA Podiatrist Delivers Commencement Address at BUSPM
Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP) and Barry Class of 1999 alumnus, recently gave the Commencement address to Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine (BUSPM). Dr. DeCaro stressed three key themes for becoming a successful podiatric physician. 1) Never listen to the naysayers, 2) how passion breeds success, and 3) the importance of empathy when dealing with patients.

|
(L-R) Drs. Albert Armstrong (Dean, BUSPM), Louis DeCaro and sister Linda Bevilacqua (President of Barry) |
Dr. DeCaro also told the story of his own journey into the field of podiatric medicine, and how and why he has specialized in podopediatrics. This year's graduating class achieved something unique and impressive. They achieved the “Podiatry Trifecta.” 100% pass rate of Boards Part 2 both written and clinical, and a 100% residency match!

CA Podiatrist Runs Clinic Devoted to Reducing Amputations in Diabetics
Maria Valdez didn’t have a lot of options. A wound on her foot that had become infected wasn’t healing because of her diabetes. She started using a wheelchair to get around. A year and a half ago, it seemed likely she was going to lose part of her leg. On a recent weekday, Valdez lay on a bed in a clinic in Boyle Heights. Her doctor, Stanley Mathis, DPM, pulled off her sock and lifted her foot toward the ceiling. The heel, which once was so decayed that he could see the white of the bone, was now covered in smooth skin.

Valdez put her socks and shoes back on. She stood up and, though a little wobbly, walked down the hallway. “I don’t like to lose, and I’m not used to losing, especially when it comes to limbs,” Dr. Mathis said. Mathis, a podiatrist, runs a clinic at White Memorial Medical Center in Boyle Heights devoted to reducing amputations among diabetics — a tall order that requires treating wounds as well as helping people better manage the disease.

CA Podiatrist Lauds HIE Interoperability
MTBC, a provider of Health and cloud-based clinical and practice management solutions has announced that it has successfully developed Health Information Exchange (HIE) interfaces for interoperability between its highly ranked clinical platforms and leading hospitals.
|
|
Dr. Phillip Darragh |
Phillip E. Darragh, DPM, from the Redondo Beach Podiatry Group, Inc., said, "The technical staff at MTBC have been doing an outstanding job in connecting us to our hospital's new health information exchange." As a result of this connectivity, Dr. Darragh and other providers will have a more comprehensive view of their patients' medical history at the point of care and be able to focus more of their time on caring for patients and less on administrative tasks.

Healthcare Fraud 101: Under False Claims Act - Part 4
4. The fourth step is to determine how best to convey to your employees the existence of the investigation. You want to be sure employees understand that they should not talk directly to any government agents if they are contacted. Instead, they should let the agent know that he has to talk to the practice's lawyers first.

| QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) | |
Query: Interstate Licensing
I just read an article in Univadis reporting that interstate medical licensing is now available in 18 states that participate in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. There are elegibility requirements and fees (varied by state), and background checks are required. Seven more states and DC have legislation pending to join the compact. There was no mention of the MD vs. DO degree. Does such a movement exist within our podiatric medical specialty to broaden our licensing structure?

From: Robert S. Steinberg, DPM
I use Availity to check BCBS IL Eligibility & Benefits, and many times I can also check coverage via the Patient Cost Estimator. It doesn't always work for out-of-state national plans or some union plans. I can also view and print EOBs, as BCBS IL makes payments via direct deposit.

RE: The Passing of Janusz Skwark, DPM
He was my classmate at Scholl, 1986. I haven't seen him since graduation. All I remember in our four years was his constant smile and good cheer. May he rest in peace.
