PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
Key to DFUs is Prevention: OH Podiatrist
Diabetic foot ulcers can begin in a mundane way. Maybe it’s a new pair of shoes or an extra long walk. Next thing you know, you have a small callus or blister on your foot. The problem arises when you lose feeling in your feet. If you keep walking instead of stopping or changing shoes, a small sore may turn into a more serious wound. Up to 10 percent of people with diabetes will end up with a foot ulcer, podiatrist William Scott, DPM, says.
|
Dr. William Scott |
“Patients come to see me and they say, ‘One day, I just took off my sock, and I saw blood. I have no idea why or how it happened,’” he says. These ulcers cause the skin to wear away, most commonly because of damaged nerves in the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy) resulting from diabetes. Although ulcers are sometimes dangerous and can lead to amputation, the key is prevention, Dr. Scott says.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
VA Podiatrist Holds Concert to Raise Money for Charity
On April 21, 2018, Richmond podiatrist David Weiss, DPM raised over $1,000 for the McShin Foundation by entertaining a packed house of people. Besides being a podiatrist, he is a guitarist/songwriter who has played with many local bands.
|
Dr. David Weiss |
Dr. Weiss formed the group “Alliance” during podiatry school at the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1990 with fellow podiatric students James Taylor and Eric Teeman. The McShin Foundation is a local organization that helps people battling drug and alcohol addiction.

PODIATRY AND THE VA |
Veteran's Photos of Dirty VA Podiatry Clinic Room Go Viral
One veteran's post on social media has prompted a VA clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah, to apology for the disarray and dirty conditions found at the facility. CBS affiliate KUTV writes that Army Veteran Christopher Wilson -- who served two tours in Iraq -- was subjected to a room he couldn't believe. He took pictures that included "debris on the floor, a full garbage can, cutting tools, a soda cup on a counter, and medical kits left open."
|
Photos of VA Podiatry Clinic Room |
Wilson had a podiatry appointment scheduled April 5 and had to wait 45 minutes before he discovered the filthy room. VA Salt Lake City responded to the incident Saturday saying the room appears to be where casts are applied to patients with diabetic ulcers, according to KUTV.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Common Reasons Your Claims are Bouncing Back - Part 1
Billing is a complex and often tedious procedure—especially with ICD-10 codes. However, the reasons for returned and delayed claims often boil down to a few basics. Here are some of the most common billing mistakes practices make, and how to make sure your practice avoids them.
1. Little Typos, Big Headaches - Often reimbursements are delayed or denied because of very small, easy-to-make mistakes. “When I was assistant director of billing for a large multi-specialty practice,” says Brennan Cantrell, “the front office would often transpose the numbers or letters in policy number or omit a group number or plan ID. The front desk is extremely busy, and these are easy mistakes to make.”
Cantrell, who is now commercial health insurance strategist for the American Academy of Family Physicians, says that the ideal solution is having an employee dedicated to watching for and correcting these errors. For small practices, this may not be a full-time employee, and the time saved by not having to resubmit claims might offset the time spent rooting out mistakes.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: How are DPMs Dealing with Increasing Overhead Expenses?
My accountant read me the "riot act" when he was at my office last week. He does not understand why my overhead expenses are rising so astronomically. I am not just talking about rent, insurances, and payroll. The biggest rise seems to be the cost of supplies. I haven't changed vendors and yet my accountant was able to show to me my expense increases from year to year. Everything I buy is essential to day-to-day practice. How have some of you dealt with this insidious rise in the cost of day to day supplies. Are any of these "group buying" companies a viable answer?
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

From: Arthur Gudeon, DPM
Although I agree that Dr. Herbert’s letter has some merit financially, and possibly speeds up the route to a doctorate, I’m not sure I totally agree with his concept. A well rounded four year pre-med course, which includes the humanities, the study of how people process and document the human experience, including courses such as philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history, and language gives one a better understanding of the world we live in. There’ll be enough concentration and focus on science and medicine in their next four years, and in their residency programs. On a personal basis, I’m very glad to have graduated NYU with a major in English literature, minor in history, and playing clarinet in the (then) football band, before entering NYCPM. I think you end up a more well-rounded and interesting person.

RE: Horizon NJ Direct Medicare Advantage Plan L3000 Denials
From: Jim Ricketti, DPM
Prior to casting and fabricating the L3000 devices, make a pre-authorization phone call or go out on NAVI net to obtain the authorization. It is approved 99.9% of the time. If you have received a rejection (even after that process), you must inform the Insurance Committee of the NJPMS and they will get it resolved. If you are not a member, please join the Society.
