The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) has announced that it has partnered with Practice Management Institute (PMI), the nation's leading and largest provider of non-clinical practice management education, to conceive the first ever certification program for podiatric medical office professionals, the Certified Medical Office Manager – Podiatry (CMOM-POD).

AAPPM President Ben Weaver, DPM sparked the idea after his wife, Brooke, achieved her CMOM certification. Registration for the program is expected to be available by mid-May. Training webinars are expected to be available in July. Trainers are handpicked, well-known leaders in Podiatric Office Management. Program dates and information will be distributed via the AAPPM website.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
Early Treatments Crucial for Diabetic Ulcers: IL Podiatrist

People with diabetes often have problems with their circulation. “Diabetes affects the blood supply and heart, but also small blood vessels,” says Crystal Holmes, DPM, a professor of podiatry at the University of Michigan Health System. Sluggish circulation hampers the blood supply needed to support healthy tissue growth. Combined, those factors can lead to chronic wounds called ulcers. They’re most often found on the feet, in part because the feet are most often where neuropathy and circulatory problems strike.

Dr. Crystal Holmes

Prompt, expert treatment can mean the difference between healing and amputation. That’s why people with diabetes must take the initiative. “It’s important to have a plan,” says Holmes. “It’s better to call me early than wait a month—then I’m probably going to be doing an amputation.” Early treatments are critical: Dead tissue gets in the way of immune cells and other healing factors in the blood and the bacteria they’re trying to kill, slowing wound healing. “It’s more important what you take off than what you put on,” Holmes says about removing affected flesh. “Having a good blood supply is key—when you deliver antibiotics, they need to be able to get there.”

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
STS Company Donates to Podiatric Medical Schools

Drs. Peter Graf and Richard Stess, co-founders and developers of the STS Company in Mill Valley, CA have announced the continued donation of casting products to colleges of podiatric medicine. “It gives students the opportunity to use our casting socks while they are matriculating in podiatry school” according to the developers of the unique casting products that are used throughout the industry.

Drs. Peter Graf and Richard Stess

The products were first introduced to the profession in 1995 and have evolved as the preferred method of casting in many office and hospital settings. The STS casting products are used for the fabrication of custom foot orthotic devices and a variety of  AFOs. The company donates to six of the podiatric colleges each year and has done so for a decade. Instructional videos are also made available to each matriculating student. “We will continue to support our students in the various casting techniques as long as there is a need and desire.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Robert Boudreau, DPM

I've casually read the posts regarding the subject of "Compensation Rates for New Practitioners" trying not to bite my tongue off. Dr. Fellner, please understand this salient point: no one owes new practitioners a job or a certain salary. Your degree and $4.50 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. New practitioners seem to think that just because they have a degree and specialized training, the profession owes them a living to repay their massive debt which they incurred. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Ask any person with a law degree who currently drives a taxi cab. Most new graduates seem to think that once they enter the job market, they are entitled to high salaries, paid medical, dental, vacation, malpractice, CME, etc. And they are equally surprised that "overnight success" takes about 15 years of hard work to achieve. In the real world, hard work, persistence, and a lot of luck are the keys to real success.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM

I was very disappointed to read today's PM News and see that the discussion of compensation rates for new practitioners had deteriorated into a pissing match among our colleagues, one of whom regularly contributes valuable insights in this forum; a Dr. Withheld who claims to be making $500K+ after four years on the job, and another DPM who perpetuates the myth that DPMs who have just completed their residencies should expect at least $100K to $200K to start. Nurses do NOT routinely make six figures as was stated. There may indeed be some positions out there for group or hospital employed podiatrists that will pay that kind of money but I suspect that ...

Editor's note: Dr. Kittay's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1C
From: Name Withheld

I would like to respond to Dr. Kiel by noting that $750,000 were not gross charges, but gross revenue for the practice. I bill out about 1.25 million myself. I would like him to recalculate his formula.
