IL Podiatrist Inducted into National Fitness Hall of Fame
Illinois sports podiatrist Robert Weil, DPM was honored on April 28th in Addison, Illinois as the first podiatrist inducted into the prestigious National Fitness Hall of Fame.
|
Dr. Robert Weil |
Dr. Bob, co-author of Amazon best seller #HeySportsParents and host of the live weekly radio show The Sports Doctor paid special tribute to posthumous inductee Dr. George Sheehan, “The running cardiologist” and former medical director of Runners World Magazine, who helped put sports podiatry on the map by stressing to his many MD colleagues the connection of foot mechanics and orthotics with runner's knee problems .

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
AL Podiatrist Keynotes Healthy Woman Luncheon
Wiregrass Podiatry owner Jennifer Decker, DPM focused on feet and fungus during the recent Healthy Woman Luncheon. Dr. Decker explained how a podiatrist’s role has changed in the past 50 or more years. “Podiatrists are slightly different than what they used to be,” she said. “Fifty or 60 years ago, podiatrists basically just cut toenails, cut corns. Now, podiatrists are trained surgically. Their education is much more advanced."
|
Dr. Jennifer Decker |
Decker said many people may not know they qualify to go to a podiatrist for what she called “a medical pedicure". "Anybody who has diabetes should be seeing a podiatrist at least once a year anyway for an evaluation," she said. "They [patients] also do qualify to have all this done about every two to three months if they need it." She said individuals who have neuropathy, or loss of sensation, from other situations are eligible to be seen by a podiatrist.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2 |
IN Podiatrist Attends NRA National Meeting
For the tens of thousands of people who attend the NRA’s annual meeting each year, it is mostly an enormous trade show, where firearms enthusiasts check out the latest guns, ammunition, scopes, hunting bows, and other outdoor gear.
|
Dr. Michael Carroll |
Mike Carroll, DPM, a podiatrist from Greenwood, IN and his 15-year-old son, Michael, came to the convention to check out hunting gear. The father and son were encouraged by what they said was a great show of support for gun ownership and the Second Amendment. But Carroll said he would like to see the organization focus more on its traditional mission of gun safety. “I think most people are afraid of guns because they don’t know how to use them,” Carroll said.

HIPAA UPDATE |
HHS to cap HIPAA Fines Based on 'Culpability'
HHS updated the maximum it will penalize providers, health plans, and their business associates in the wake of HIPAA violations, in some cases dropping the upper limit by more than $1 million. The new system sets annual limits for these fines based on the organization's "level of culpability" associated with the HIPAA violation, according to the department's notice of enforcement discretion released late Friday. That means organizations that have taken measures to meet HIPAA's requirements will face a much smaller maximum penalty than those who are found neglectful.
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, better known as the HITECH Act, outlines minimum and maximum civil money penalties for HIPAA enforcement based on four tiers, which take into account whether the organization in question was aware of the violation and whether it had taken steps to abide by HIPAA's rules. The tiers escalate in severity, from an organization that is unaware of the violation to one that demonstrated "willful neglect" in not correcting violations.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Is it Time to Reform Your Forms? - Part 2
Exchanging health information is a two-way street. On one side, physicians aim to gather pertinent information from patients. On the other side, patients are looking for clear direction from practitioners. If you haven’t revised the documents you share with patients for a while, perhaps now is the time to review and update them. Here are a few suggestions to help you get started.
2. Lab test and radiology forms - To fast or not to fast, that is the question. At least that’s one of the questions. Take a look at the lab, radiology, and other external forms you use on a daily basis. Are the instructions clear? Is there enough information about the location, contact number, and opening hours of the provider? View these forms from a patient’s point of view to see if there are any confusing or vague instructions.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) |
RE: Laser Treatment Reported Ineffective for Onychomycosis Related to Diabetes
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH
Dermatology Daily (American Academy of Dermatology, April 29,2019) indicated that in a study reported by Dermatology Advisor (April 26, 2019) among patients with diabetes who are at increased risk of developing foot ulcers, laser therapy for onychomycosis, most commonly due to Trichophyton rubrum, was safe but not effective.
The complete study was published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. Researchers of this randomized, quadruple-blind, sham-controlled study evaluated the efficacy, cure rate, and safety of laser therapy for onychomycosis among such patients, including those who were diagnosed with diabetes.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN TE NEWS) |
From: Stephen Kominsky, DPM
I just finished reading the story on “Single use Extremity Kits Reduces O R Time” whereby a 14 month study was completed by John Levin, DPM where he concluded that by using single use, sterile “kits” for each procedure, not only OR time, but cost is greatly reduced. I am happy to report that that information has been well known, and has been the mantra for In2Bones for the past three plus years.
In2Bones is a well-known surgical hardware company that provides sterile packaging for every procedure, from screws and plates to joint prosthesis for the foot and ankle surgeon. In2Bones has been in business for over three years and was the first company to recognize the tremendous benefits to offering the individual sterile packaging model not only for the facility but the surgeon too. Those benefits get passed on to the patient as well, in terms of costs, and OR safety by having a shorter surgical time and less anesthesia.
Disclosure: I am on the surgeon’s advisory board for In2Bones.
