NYCPM Serves Homeless Residents in Transitional Housing
Anthony R. Iorio, DPM, MPH says that one year ago NYCPM was approached by Dr. Mitch Rubin, medical consultant to the Center for the Homeless to provide podiatric services to the residents of CFH’s transitional supportive housing. CFH is one of several organizations funded to serve underserved and uninsured homeless populations. Dr. Iorio says that the residents receive complete medical workups from psychiatry to podiatry. "We work with Regina Olasin, MD, who is the medical director for both shelters. The residents are hit harder by diabetes than the general population; a lot of the patients don’t even know they have diabetes or are newly diagnosed."

Since CFH works with the Health & Hospitals Corporation (HHC), NYCPM can continue to see the patients at our hospitals or at FCNY and the patients can receive the ongoing care they need. (The residents’ stay in the shelters is temporary.) “We treat and educate,” says Iorio, “we’re healers in more ways than one. We work at Franklin House in the Bronx, a 200-bed shelter for women, and at the men’s shelter on Ward’s Island." Iorio oversees the work of alumni Stephanie Maurais, DPM in the women’s shelter and Karim Badawy, DPM in the men’s shelter. Two students are also assigned; Iorio says, “working at the shelters helps the students understand how health disparities within a community need to be addressed.”

CMS Now Posting Registry EHR Readiness Data
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has developed a centralized repository for public health, clinical data, and specialized registry electronic reporting options to help eligible hospitals and professionals comply with Stage 2 Meaningful Use (MU) requirements. Now, the agency has fulfilled its promise to make the information publicly available on its website.
The repository has been anticipated for almost five years. In the agency’s final rule for Stage 2 of Meaningful Use, which was released September 2012, CMS said it would create such a centralized repository. And, in a subsequent May 2014 notice, the agency indicated that the database would serve as the “definitive information source” for determining public health agency and registry readiness to receive electronic data associated with MU objectives.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Healthcare Fraud 101: Under False Claims Act (FCA) - Part 2
The next step is to take immediate action to ensure that relevant documents are not destroyed or deleted. Once you know you are under investigation, your practice is under a legal obligation to preserve relevant documents. The safest bet is to preserve everything. Your lawyer will work with your IT employee or consultant to prevent the deletion of emails and other electronic documents and to instruct all employees to keep all relevant information.
This may seem like a minor (but expensive) step, but it is critical. A FCA case is civil; deliberately destroying documents to avoid disclosure to the government is criminal obstruction of justice. It is bad enough to be under investigation for an FCA case; you do not want to kick the hornet's nest by engaging in any conduct that may raise the specter of criminal charges.

From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM
Poppycock. The government and investigators do not tell you until it is essentially too late. Besides a Grand Jury Indictment, which is held without you, the indictment will take on a different context once at trial. An indictment outlines charges against the defendant. However, it may read that the coding business practice is to follow the AMA's CPT Code Book "a five number code."
When the defendant gets to trial, then the coding expert will say, 'the (AMA's) CPT Code Book is "not as pure as it looks." Now, here is how a defendant really may find out how coding issues are interpreted and given "color". Typically,...

RE: FL Podiatrist Discusses Ankle Replacements and Fusions
From: Randall Brower, DPM
Dr. Black is quoted as saying, "Patients typically need ankle fusions every five years." This quote is not only completely confusing, but completely untrue. I've never heard such a thing. Is he saying that when I fuse an ankle joint, I will typically need to go back and "refuse" the joint every 5 years?
I hope this was an editorial mistake and not what Dr. Black actually stated. If he did in fact state this, it is obvious that he favors ankle replacement by using 10 years as a contrast to some nebulous 5 years for a fusion. I hope Dr. Black can clarify.
